Abstract

Willingness to communicate (WTC) in a foreign language (FL) has become one of the most important affective variables in the context of learning a foreign language including motivation, anxiety, learner beliefs, and many others. This study looks into the underlying causes of English students' propensity to speak English, particularly in higher education settings after the Covid-19 pandemic. The study also determines the WTC of college students in English classes. One thousand students who are presently enrolled in English programs at Palestinian universities constitute the study's participants. The study employed a descriptive research design: a questionnaire was used to collect the data, which were then analyzed using statistical analysis methods in the SPSS program. The findings of the study indicated that the two primary factors negatively affecting the WTC among English learners in Palestine's colleges and universities were personality traits and a lack of confidence in one's speaking abilities.

Abstract

Under the influence of the concept of lifelong learning, teachers’ learning has become the main paradigm of teacher development. The traditional training for primary and secondary school teachers often pays too much attention to the transmission of theories and ignores the practical needs of teachers, resulting in the dilemma of low learning efficiency and poor effect. In order to break through the current learning dilemma of primary and secondary school teachers and meet the needs of students’ growth and long-term development of schools, on the basis of clarifying the basic implication of teacher learning driven by “multi-subject needs”, this paper introduces the Activity Theory to discuss the implications of teacher learning, constructs the teacher learning mode driven by “multi-subject needs,” and analyzes the operating mechanism of this learning mode. In order to promote the effective operation of this mode, teachers should set up the concept of lifelong learning, adhere to the self-orientation of learning, and pay attention to learning reflection. The school level should create a cultural atmosphere for teachers’ learning, make clear the purpose of teachers’ learning, let teachers’ pay attention to the practical situation, and make teachers’ learning become a normal activity.

Abstract

Concern about the role of school principals in improving the quality of special schools remains one of the challenges in realizing better quality education in Indonesia. However, some obstacles to the role of the principal in improving the quality of special schools still exist. Principals of special schools are still faced with obstacles to improving school quality, such as the quality of teachers. Therefore, this qualitative study aims to explore the role of the principal of the Southwest Aceh public special school in improving teacher quality. In particular, it discusses the main challenges faced by the Southwest Aceh public special school principals and the roles and strategies they use to improve teacher quality. This qualitative research is to investigate the role of the head of the Southwest Aceh public special school in Indonesia, asking the main research question, what is the role of the principal in improving teacher quality? This research was conducted using a case study design. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with school principals, observation, and secondary data, including official documents and existing literature on the role of school principals. Data analysis was used using data analysis techniques according to Miles and Huberman: data collection, data presentation, data reduction, and conclusions. The interconnected theoretical framework built through the role of the principal and the theory of quality improvement is the most suitable because it helps to understand the experience, working conditions, and challenges of exploring the role of the principal in improving school quality critically. The research findings reveal the role of the school principal in improving the quality of teachers; that is, the principal conducts guidance, coaching, and supervision, grants study permits for schools to a higher level, and conducts training to increase teacher competence. Besides that, the principal explores new ideas from teachers according to the times in the world of education and creates harmonious relationships, openness, adjustments to the curriculum, division of teaching tasks or additional assignments, and differential learning, and provides rewards and punishments to teachers who break the rules. In giving the workload of main tasks and additional assignments to teachers, the average is high, and the school program is not related to each other.

Abstract

The swift evolution of educational technology has revolutionized learning accessibility, presenting unique challenges and opportunities, especially in remote areas. This study probes the technological readiness of Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI) teachers in these marginalized regions, using a quantitative ex post facto research design. A sample of 112 teachers, randomly selected, provided data via Google Forms and questionnaires, analyzed using two-way ANOVA and cluster analysis in SPSS 23. The research aimed to categorize teachers into five technology readiness profiles: explorers, pioneers, skeptics, paranoids, and slow adopters, based on optimism, innovativeness, discomfort, and insecurity. However, findings revealed only three distinct groups: explorers, pioneers, and slow adopters. Explorers showed high technological confidence but limited innovation engagement, while pioneers, despite readiness, faced challenges like scarce resources and insufficient tech knowledge. Slow adopters, largely older teachers, lagged in embracing new technologies. This lag can be attributed to adverse conditions and inadequate infrastructure, preventing full exploitation of digital tools in education. The study highlights the crucial need to overcome these barriers to enhance technology integration in MI schools, thereby improving educational outcomes in underdeveloped areas.

Abstract

All languages contain inherent ambiguities, and foreign language learners often encounter various uncertainties when learning a new language. Ambiguity tolerance is a crucial personality trait that can significantly influence the foreign language learning process. Over time, ambiguity tolerance has gained importance due to its impact on different aspects of language learning. This study investigates the relationship between ambiguity tolerance, the optimal choice of language learning approaches, and the degree of anxiety in learning English as an additional foreign language. The research was conducted with graduate and undergraduate students from the United Arab Emirates University, specifically those studying in the education field and enrolled in an English foreign language learning course. A quantitative Google survey was administered, gathering data from 270 students, which was subsequently analyzed using SmartPLS 3. The results revealed that ambiguity tolerance is negatively associated with students' anxiety levels and positively correlated with their choice of language learning strategies, ultimately enhancing their oral speech accuracy. This study offers valuable insights for academicians to design strategies that promote ambiguity tolerance among learners, thereby boosting their motivation and reducing anxiety levels. It also contributes significantly to the body of knowledge for researchers in this field.
