Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the id, ego, superego in the character of Billy Hope and defense mechanisms to help him deal with his trauma and influence his decision in the Southpaw Movie. The method used was descriptive qualitative. The subject of this study was Billy Hope as the main character. The data collection technique was carried out watching the movie, taking notes, and classifying the theories based on Sigmund Freud and Anna Freud. The data analysis techniques used were organizing the data, reading the data, coding, identifying themes, and representing descriptions and themes. The results showed that Billy’s id was more dominant than the ego and superego. The defense mechanisms used more were displacement/Sublimation, followed by undoing, turning against self, isolation, reaction formation, repression, and projection. The conclusion of this study were that the dominance of the id caused many of Billy Hope’s actions to arise from emotional impulses, while defense mechanisms helped him channel those emotions into action that allowed him to survive, recover from trauma, and develop into a stronger person.   Keywords: Defense Mechanisms, Movie, Psychoanalysis, Structure of the Mind.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the politeness strategies used by netizens in the comment section of the Instagram account @amazondotin by applying Brown and Levinson’s Politeness Theory (1987). Using a qualitative descriptive method, the researchers collected comments from 17 Instagram posts and categorized them into four politeness strategies: bald on-record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record. The findings reveal a total of 52 identified strategies, with bald on-record being the most dominant (36.54%), followed by positive politeness (26.92%), negative politeness (25%), and off-record (11.54%). These results indicate that users on e-commerce social media platforms tend to communicate directly, especially when expressing urgency or dissatisfaction, while politeness markers appear depending on contextual and intentional factors. Overall, the study concludes that digital communication in marketplace settings blends directness with socially motivated politeness strategies, reflecting users’ attempts to balance clarity, efficiency, and interpersonal consideration.

Abstract

This research provides a comprehensive investigation into the evolution and usage of the second-person pronoun thou across the history of English, with a particular focus on the pivotal Early Modern period when the pronoun you supplanted it as the dominant form. While previous studies have extensively documented its historical decline, a significant gap remains in understanding its residual presence in contemporary language. This study employs robust corpus linguistics methodologies, analyzing data extracted from the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) to map the modern footprint of thou. A detailed examination of 12,385 instances demonstrates that thou has not vanished but persists within highly specific and marked domains. Its usage is predominantly confined to religious liturgy, literary quotations, and deliberate stylistic archaism, where it consistently carries either archaic or profoundly reverential connotations. These findings underscore a crucial linguistic phenomenon: historical forms can retain significant functional and symbolic power long after their grammatical obsolescence. This study ultimately demonstrates how archaic linguistic forms continue to exert a subtle yet persistent influence on modern English, proving that thou maintains an enduring cultural and symbolic value, serving as a marker of solemnity, tradition, and stylistic nuance.

Abstract

This classroom action research aimed to reduce plagiarism in students’ analytical exposition writing through the use of the QuillBot application as a supportive tool in the writing revision process. The study involved 35 students of class XI-I at SMAN 3 Singaraja. Based on the preliminary observation, most students obtained similarity percentages above the acceptable threshold after their writing was checked using Turnitin, indicating that students still experienced difficulties in paraphrasing and tended to copy information directly from internet sources. The data were collected through students’ writing drafts, Turnitin similarity reports, classroom observation, and informal interviews with the English teacher. The research was conducted in one cycle consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The findings showed that after the implementation of the QuillBot-based instructional intervention, all students were able to reduce their similarity percentages below the acceptable threshold, indicating that both the individual and classical passing grade criteria had been achieved. Furthermore, the independent writing results showed that students were able to maintain low similarity percentages while using QuillBot independently. These findings indicate that the guided use of QuillBot in writing instruction can help reduce plagiarism and increase students’ awareness of responsible academic writing practices.
