Abstract

The transition from the 2013 Curriculum to the Emancipated Curriculum represents a pivotal change in Indonesian education aimed at improving educational quality and relevance. This study explores teachers’ perceptions of this curriculum change, focusing on its implementation challenges and benefits. Employing a qualitative descriptive research design, the study utilizes narrative inquiry through semi-structured interviews with teachers directly involved in the transition process. Key findings reveal challenges such as reduced teaching time and curriculum constraints, alongside benefits including increased creativity and enhanced integration of technology. Teachers’ perceptions underscore the critical role of adaptability in navigating curriculum change effectively. The study highlights implications for enhancing educational practices and student outcomes in Indonesia, emphasizing the need for supportive policies and professional development to facilitate successful curriculum implementation. Abstract

The methodology section is one of the most important aspects of a master thesis because it describes how the research was done and what method and procedure was taken in that research. This research aimed to discover the most common grammatical problems and possible causes of grammatical issues in master theses written by English education postgraduate program students at Bengkulu University, especially in the methodology section. This study used a mixed method, namely qualitative and quantitative. Most of the grammatical problems were investigated quantitatively, and the causes of grammatical problems were studied qualitatively. The corpus of this study was 20 master theses written by English education postgraduate program students who graduated in 2021. The findings showed that the most frequent grammatical problems found in the methodology section of the master theses were incorrect verbs, 38,60% or 44 times, which were dominated by tense confusion and subject-verb agreement, which confused the reader. Further, they also often lack the necessary syntactic connections between the verb and the nearest subject. The cause of the grammatical problems found in the methodology section of the theses was carelessness, first language interference, and translation. Carelessness becomes the highest possible cause of the grammatical problems committed by students. The conclusion of this research provides information about the most frequent grammatical problems and possible causes in the master theses of methodology section. Abstract

This research looked into how hedges were used in the British Council Teacher Podcast. How can I use different languages in my teaching? This research set out to 1) characterize the language characteristics of hedges and 2) examine the roles that hedges play in conversation. Because this study aims to provide explanations, the qualitative method is employed. The data consisted of utterances made by the podcast participants—Chris, Sue, Mei, and Tony—that indicated the use of hedges. Through the examination of 40 hedging instances, the research identified various types of hedges, with modal lexical verbs being the most frequently used (20%), followed by approximators, introduction phrases, and adjectival/adverbial modal phrases (each at 17.5%). "If" clauses (12.5%) and compound hedges (15%) were also prevalent, showcasing the speakers’ strategic use of linguistic devices to express uncertainty, manage interpersonal relationships, and foster engagement. The findings demonstrate that hedges serve as a critical tool in discussing sensitive topics, such as language policies in education, allowing the speakers to present their views in a flexible and adaptable manner. This research highlights the important role hedging plays in maintaining politeness, reducing imposition, and creating a collaborative conversational environment, particularly in discussions about teaching practices and multilingualism. Abstract

This study aims to examine aspects of cohesion and coherence in descriptive paragraphs written by grade XI students of SMA Negeri 2 Gerokgak. Both aspects play an important role in conveying information in a clear and structured manner. This research uses a mixed method approach with an explanatory sequential design that combines quantitative and qualitative methods. Sampling was done through cluster random sampling method with a lottery system, and class XI-3 was selected as the research sample. The results showed that the majority of students were quite capable of writing descriptive paragraphs that were quite coherent and used cohesion devices appropriately. However, there were still students who had difficulty in maintaining consistency and logical flow in their writing. This finding emphasizes the importance of the teacher's role in instilling an understanding of cohesion and coherence in the writing learning process. With proper application of these two concepts, students can produce more systematic and communicative writing. Therefore, writing lessons that emphasize cohesion and coherence need to be continuously developed to improve the overall quality of students' writing.   Keywords: Coherence, Cohesion, and Descriptive Paragraph

Abstract

This study illustrates the de-pragmatization of metaphorical linguistic aspects in the sermonic style of Sheikh Ahmed Al-Waeli, a conspicuous Iraqi Shia theologian known for his distinctive rhetorical performance.  This study illustrates Al-Waeli's sermons to classify forms of metaphor and observes the technique of de-pragmatization, when speeches lose their original pragmatic power due to conventionalization, semantic degradation, and re-contextualization. Therefore, the study uses a qualitative analysis of metaphorical expressions derived from Al-Waeli's sermons, improved by quantitative data concerning metaphor varieties and de-pragmatization procedures.  The results designate that Al-Waeli's metaphorical aspect shows a sophisticated stability between conventional Islamic metaphors and novel practices, with contrasting topics of de-pragmatization in several sermon situations.  Besides, the present study develops a thought of religious discourse via de-pragmatization procedures, while preserving religious integrity and communicative competence.  Therefore, this research simplifies the rhetorical styles used in modern Islamic sermons and the linguistic mechanisms that enable the transference of religious beliefs across cultural and temporal restrictions.   Keywords: De-Pragmatization, Islamic Philological Style, Metaphor, Sermonic Style, Sheikh Ahmed Al-Waeli

Abstract

This study aims to develop an e-book containing a guide to English learning activities based on the Discovery Learning approach, designed to enhance the learning engagement of eighth-grade junior high school students. The background of this development stems from initial findings indicating low levels of student engagement in learning, both cognitively, emotionally, and behaviorally. The study employs the ADDE development model (Analysis, Design, Development, Evaluation), which consists of four main stages. Initial data were collected through classroom observations, teacher interviews, and document analysis to understand the current learning conditions and the needs of teachers. The resulting product is an e-book that includes learning activities along with teacher instructions, student activities, engagement focus, assessment, and teacher reflection. Expert validation results indicate that the e-book is feasible to use in terms of content, design, and alignment with the principles of Discovery Learning. These findings suggest that the e-book has the potential to serve as an effective learning medium that actively promotes student engagement.
