Abstract

Background: Schizophrenia stands out as a prominent type of psychosis among various mental disorders. Auditory hallucinations, a prevailing symptom, particularly affect patients with primary psychotic disorders, showcasing a lifetime prevalence rate of 60-80% within the spectrum of schizophrenia disorders. Objective: This case study presents data and insights concerning the management of nursing challenges linked to auditory hallucinations. Case: A 17-year-old male was admitted to the psychiatric hospital after being involved in a violent incident with his family. He contended that he was compelled by an external entity to carry out this act. When in his room, the patient exhibits pronounced hallucinatory behavior, including tangential thinking, inability to concentrate during conversations, physically covering his ears in fear, and restless pacing, occasionally attempting to conceal himself under the bed. The nurse employs intervention strategies to address the client’s hallucinations, incorporating methods to gain control over them. These strategies involve encouraging breaks, fostering engagement in positive activities, closely monitoring the patient, and providing education on consistent medication adherence. Conclusions: After a nine-day period of effectively managing the hallucinations, the patient gains substantial control over them, thereby leading to the resolution of his hallucinatory issues. This research holds potential as a valuable resource for psychiatric nurses in devising interventions within psychiatric hospital settings. Furthermore, it can serve as a foundational component for the evaluation of psychiatric facilities in their provision of effective interventions for patients with psychiatric conditions

Abstract

Background: Patients with multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) require complex intensive care, and family involvement plays an essential role in achieving patient recovery. Family-centered care in the intensive care unit (ICU) benefits patients, families, and healthcare workers. Objective: This case study aimed to evaluate the family-centered care approach for patients with MODS in the ICU. Case: A 46-year-old male patient with MODS presented various problems, including the risk of respiratory infections, impaired renal perfusion, and pressure sores. An interview with the patient’s family revealed that they felt guilty, worried, and lacked sufficient information about the patient’s condition. The interventions provided to the family included giving them information about the patient’s condition, care plans, and evaluation results after procedures, providing spiritual guidance, offering family support, and involving them in the patient’s required procedures.  Conclusion: After the patient had been admitted for two days, there was an improvement in the patient’s outcomes. Simultaneously, the patient’s family experienced a sense of calmness and increased satisfaction with the provided health services. To facilitate the implementation of family-centered care in the ICU, it is crucial to further develop hospital policies. Moreover, achieving successful family-centered care necessitates the support and cooperation of the medical staff.

Abstract

Human sexuality, a fundamental aspect of overall health and well-being, persists throughout all stages of the human lifecycle, including advanced age. Research demonstrates that a significant number of older adults maintain interest in sexual activity and continue to be sexually active during their later years. Nurses and healthcare providers must learn to understand the intricate interplay of psychological and physical influences leading to sexual difficulties among older individuals. Such knowledge is critical when providing effective assistance to older adults grappling with sexuality-related concerns. Given that the over 65 population accesses healthcare services frequently, healthcare professionals serve as pivotal intermediaries in addressing sexual issues. Nevertheless, medical personnel often feel uncomfortable and unsure about initiating conversations about sexuality among this population. This paper explores the reasons underlying the common tendency among healthcare professionals to avoid such discussions and suggests strategies to ameliorate this situation.

Abstract

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is defined by repeated episodes of partial or complete upper airway collapse, obstructing breathing during sleep. OSA is a dangerous health condition with high mortality and morbidity. Due to the rising prevalence of obesity, OSA is on the rise in developing countries. Nevertheless, the exact number of OSA prevalence among Indonesian people is unrecognized for several reasons; for instance, low awareness of sleep disorder issues, unawareness of the symptoms and impact of OSA, limited access to polysomnography examinations, and considering snoring as a common condition. Long-term health effects, decreased sleep quality, psychological issues, and cognitive impairment are all linked to untreated OSA. Nurses can contribute to the management of OSA by conducting screening and assessment, providing health promotion to patients, and coordinating with other healthcare providers. This paper explores the prevalence of OSA, society’s perception of OSA, diagnostic or screening procedures, and treatment options for the effective management of OSA.

Abstract

Introduction: Nursing students commonly exhibit low confidence levels when handling complex patient conditions, particularly those involving deteriorating health. Their lack of confidence and competence in managing deteriorating patients may potentially cause harm and even lead to fatal consequences if early recognition of such conditions is not made, given their role as primary responders in healthcare settings. Objective: This study aims to explore the expectation and percetiption of nursing students in caring for deteriorating patients. Methods: A descriptive, qualitative approach was employed, utilizing purposive sampling to select participants. Specifically, nursing students from a school in Pahang were chosen for this study. A topic guide was provided during interviews, employing a semi-structured approach with open-ended questions. Data obtained were analyzed using thematic analysis, resulting in the identification of themes and subthemes. Results: Findings revealed that 37.5% of the nursing students were not ready, while others felt prepared despite encountering various barriers and challenges. Three themes emerged: 1) unpredictable, 2) predictable, and 3) anticipated. Conclusions: In summary, the readiness of nursing students in providing care for deteriorating patients significantly influences the care received by the patient, both directly and indirectly. Despite struggling to adapt to challenges, the nursing students displayed willingness to provide nursing care.

Abstract

Background: Prolonged labor is a significant contributor to maternal mortality rates. Various interventions have been attempted to reduce the incidence of prolonged labor, including the use of the birth ball method. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of birth ball exercises on the progression of the first stage of labor. Methods: We employed a quasi-experimental design with a posttest-only control group. The sample consisted of 30 mothers giving birth at Cibingbin Primary Health Care, with each group containing 15 respondents selected through purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test. Results: In the intervention group, all mothers experienced a normal progression of birth during the active phase of the first stage of labor, with an average labor duration of 5.70 hours. Conversely, in the control group, the majority (53.3%) experienced an abnormal progression of birth, with an average labor duration of 9.67 hours. The results indicated a significant difference in mean labor duration of 3.97 hours, demonstrating the birth ball’s effect on the progression of birth (p-value < 0.001).Conclusion: Birth ball exercises are a promising intervention for improving the progression of birth during childbirth. Therefore, these exercises can be implemented during normal labor. It is advisable that these exercises are supervised and guided by trained midwives or nurses.

Abstract

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) serves as a key indicator for assessing public health at the population level. The infection of children and toddlers with TB often stems from the lack of involvement by family members in adhering to proper hygiene practices aimed at preventing TB transmission. Objective: This study aimed to assess the impact of peer group support and motivational interviewing on parental behaviors in preventing TB transmission among children residing in the same household as a TB patient. Methods: Employing a quasi-experimental design (pre-post test with a single group), this study involved 30 parents selected through accidental sampling. The independent variables included peer group support and motivational interviewing, while the dependent variable was parental behavior concerning TB prevention in children. Data collection utilized a questionnaire assessing parents’ behaviors in preventing TB in children, which was then analyzed using the paired t-test.Results: The implementation of peer group support and motivational interviewing significantly influenced the enhancement of parental behaviors in preventing TB in children (p < 0.001).Conclusion: Both peer group support and motivational interviewing demonstrated their efficacy in altering parental behavior to prevent TB in children residing with a TB patient. These interventions could be effectively incorporated by nurses to complement ongoing tuberculosis treatment therapies.

Abstract

Background: Stunting cases among children represent one of the most serious issues in human development. Zambia, in particular, has a higher number of stunting cases in Africa. Objective: The purpose of this research was to analyze the prevalence and determinant of stunting among children under-five years in Zambia. Methods: This study utilized data from the 2018 Zambia Demographic Health Survey (ZDHS), with a total of 1,710 surveys selected. We observed variables related to mothers, children, and the environment to assess stunting. Chi-Square and Binary Logistic Regression were used for data analysis. Results: A total of 22,16% children under five years in Zambia had a stunting. We found that factors such as low birth weight (<2500 grams) (OR = 3.24; 95% CI = 2.163-4.869), mothers with no education (OR = 1.80; 95% CI = 0.681-4.760), those with the poorest wealth index (OR = 2.30; 95% CI = 1.341-3.943), intervals between previous children less than 24 months (OR = 1.58; 95% CI = 1.107-2.270), and breastfeeding for more than 6 months (OR = 4.499; 95% CI = 3.179-6.67) were associated with a higher likelihood of stunting in Zambia. Conclusions: Our study demonstrates that stunting is associated with family and household factors, as well as breastfeeding practices. Policymakers should consider implementing structured policies to address stunting, particularly for expectant mothers, as a long-term solution.
