Abstract

Pronunciation plays a vital role in English as it directly impacts comprehension during communication. Watching movies can indeed be an alternative medium for improving pronunciation skills. Movies often feature numerous conversations between actors or characters, making it easier to comprehend spoken pronunciation. Moreover, movies can contribute to the practice of proper intonation in real-life contexts by observing how actors or characters pronounce words in different situations, enabling learners to enhance their pronunciation skills and refine their articulation of sounds and vowels. This research aims to find out whether ‘Inside Out’ movie is effective to teach students pronunciation. This type of research is quantitative research with a quasi-experimental research approach. The instruments used for this study were pre-test and post-test with a sample of 60 seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Imogiri Bantul. The pre-test and post-test were carried out to measure whether there was an effect before and after being given treatment. To analyze the data, the researcher used IBM SPSS 22. The study showed that watching ‘Inside Out’ movie is considered effective for teaching pronunciation because the significance value of the paired sample test experimental class showed 0.006, where if the result < 0.05 Ha is accepted while H0 is rejected.

Abstract

In this study, we aim: (1) to find out which learning model resulted in the better problem-solving skills—the CORE learning model with putar bawah game and labyrinth board game or the direct teaching; (2) to find out which levels of emotional intelligence resulted in better problem-solving skills—high, intermediate, or low emotional intelligence; (3) to find out the interaction between the learning models and the students’ emotional intelligence. This research was a quasi-experimental research which involved the VIII-grade students of SMP Negeri 5 Surakarta in the 2022/2023 academic year. The samples used were two classes taken by cluster random sampling. The data collection techniques used were documentation, tests, and questionaires. The data analysis technique used two-way analysis of variance with unequal sample sizes. Based on the results of the analysis, we conclude that: (1) the CORE model with putar bawah game and labyrinth board game media resulted in the better problem-solving skills than the direct teaching; (2) students with higher emotional intelligence had better problem-solving skills than lower emotional intelligence; (3) there is no interaction between the learning model and the students’ emotional intelligence.

Abstract

Mathematical literacy or numeracy has gained more attention in the education world in Indonesia. This can be seen through various efforts by the Ministry of Education to continually improve it. The research aims to provide an overview of the implementation of mathematics learning in junior high schools in Surakarta, resulting in the numeracy outcomes of students. This study adopts a qualitative approach with a case study strategy. The research data includes the implementation of numeracy, teacher activities, student activities, school environment, and documents. Data sources come from informants, including teachers and students. Data collection techniques involve interviews and documentation. The research findings reveal that the implementation of mathematics learning that strengthens numeracy at SMP Negeri 11 Surakarta and SMP Muhammadiyah Special Program Surakarta is in the stages of habituation and development. Mathematics teachers play roles as motivators, guides, and facilitators. Activities undertaken include providing books, familiarizing students with solving numeracy problems, assigning tasks, motivating students, organizing activities related to numeracy improvement, imparting knowledge, and allowing students to conduct studies.

Abstract

Literacy is the ability to understand, use, and interpret written information. One of the fundamental forms of literacy that is embedded in everyday life is numerical literacy, which refers to an individual's ability to apply numerical and arithmetic concepts in daily life and interpret quantitative information in their surroundings. This research aims to develop a valid, practical, and effective interactive storytelling-based learning video to enhance students' numerical literacy in geometry. To this end, Plomp’s research and development method was applied. The result showed that, firstly, the developed product was valid, with an average total validity score of 0.910 for content validation and 0.860 for media validation. Secondly, the product was deemed practical, with an average score of 91.67% based on teacher evaluation and 80.31% based on student evaluation. Thirdly, the product was considered effective in improving students' numerical literacy, with calculated values t obs = 11.5084 and critical region = {t, t>1.721}, as well as an average N-Gain score of 0.668, indicating a moderate level of improvement. These results indicate that the developed interactive storytelling-based learning video is valid, practical, and effective in enhancing students' numerical literacy in geometry.

Abstract

Critical thinking ability are important for facing challenges in the 21st century. There are ways to foster critical thinking ability, one of which is through mathematics using learning media. This paper provides an overview of how to foster critical thinking ability, especially among students who used to learn media AljabarMath. This study aims to describe the level of students’ critical thinking ability in mathematics especially algebra subject grades VII SMP Negeri 10 Pontianak by using the AljabarMath. The method used is quantitative descriptive research. Data analysis was done to determine the percentage of critical thinking ability achieved based on indicators measured following the use of AljabarMath. The findings show that: 1) 68% of students were able to comprehend and articulate the purpose of a problem by identifying what was known and asked; 2) 64% of students were able to make a mathematical model in order to identify the relationship between statements, questions, and concepts given in the questions indicated.; 3) students who demonstrated the ability to assess the veracity of statements using the appropriate technique by 64%; and 4) students who demonstrated the ability to make accurate conclusions by taking into account pertinent information and the implications of a problem based on the available data by 62%. The utilization of AljabarMath can enhance students' critical thinking ability in algebra classes, according to the study's findings.
