Abstract

This study explores the use of traditional games as a culturally grounded strategy to promote character development and cultural preservation among Generation Z students. Responding to the growing dominance of digital gaming and the erosion of local values, the project was implemented at SMPN 27 Sigi, Central Sulawesi, through a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach. The program was integrated into a school-based class meeting activity and involved three traditional Kaili games: tilako, sopu, and estafet sarung. Data were collected through observation, informal interviews, and reflective evaluation involving students, teachers, and school leaders. The findings indicate that traditional games function not only as recreational activities but also as effective experiential learning tools that foster teamwork, communication, empathy, discipline, and responsibility. Students demonstrated high levels of engagement, supported by the strategic use of social media and strong institutional collaboration. Importantly, the study reveals that deeper cultural engagement is achieved when activities prioritize quality over quantity and are supported by clear procedural design. This research contributes to the discourse on culturally responsive pedagogy by demonstrating that integrating local cultural practices into school activities can enhance both social learning and cultural awareness. The PAR-based framework also highlights the replicability of such interventions across different educational contexts, offering a practical model for sustaining cultural heritage in the digital era.

Abstract

Sidosari Village in Salaman District, Magelang Regency, has strong agricultural potential, mainly from rice farming as the main source of income. However, heavy use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides has caused soil degradation, ecological imbalance, and health problems for farmers. This community service program introduced Biosaka, a natural elicitor made from local weeds, as an environmentally friendly alternative. Biosaka strengthens plant resistance to pests and diseases and can reduce chemical fertilizer use by 50 to 90 percent. The program used Participatory Action Research (PAR) with stages of problem identification, socialization, hands-on training, observation, and reflection. It was held from July 15 to August 2, 2024, at Sidosari Village Hall and involved representatives from 30 farmer groups. Participants successfully produced Biosaka solutions that met quality criteria, including homogeneity, absence of sediment, and appropriate pH and TDS levels. They also demonstrated high enthusiasm and provided positive feedback on the accessibility and benefits of Biosaka. The activity fostered collaboration among students, farmers, and the community, thereby increasing awareness and skills in sustainable agricultural practices. Results indicate potential improvements in soil health, reduced production costs, and long-term environmental sustainability in local agriculture.

Abstract

Double-burden malnutrition is a major issue in Indonesia, with obesity rates rising over the past decade, especially among women of productive age and adolescents. This community service program aimed to improve nutritional literacy on balanced diets and obesity prevention among 252 secondary school guidance and counseling teachers (guru BK) from five districts/cities in East Java (Kediri, Tulungagung, Blitar, Trenggalek, and Madiun), empowering them to promote healthy eating and prevent obesity in students. Using a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach with interactive lectures and group discussions, the program focused on the Ministry of Health's "Isi Piringku" guideline as a key preventive strategy. Effectiveness was measured through pre- and post-tests (10 questions each), analyzed with the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results showed a significant rise in literacy scores from 51.98 ± 12.4 to 70.24 ± 16.1 (p = 0.000), with high participant engagement. The program successfully enhanced teachers' knowledge, enabling them to support long-term obesity prevention in schools.

Abstract

The community service activity conducted by the Student Work Lecture Group (KKM) of the State Islamic University of Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang in Pandanrejo Village aimed to introduce eco print techniques on calico tote bags as a means of fostering residents' creativity and economic empowerment. Using the Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, the program involved socialization, mentoring, and hands-on training with the pounding method, in collaboration with 35 mothers from the PKK cadre group. Participants utilized tannin-rich local leaves, including guava, cassava, teak, and betel leaves, to create distinctive natural colors and patterns. The training enhanced participants' creativity, confidence, and ability to experiment with varied motifs, while raising awareness of the added economic value of eco printed tote bags compared to plain ones. This environmentally friendly initiative expanded knowledge of natural resource utilization, motivated the transformation of local materials into higher-value products, and laid a foundation for sustainable creative industry development and long-term community welfare.

Abstract

Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) remains a critical public health issue in Indonesia, with rising incidence driven by environmental factors and limited community engagement in preventive practices. This study presents a community-based intervention aimed at strengthening dengue prevention through the use of lemongrass (Cymbopogon nardus) as a natural mosquito repellent. The program adopted a Service Learning (SL) approach integrated with Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD), emphasizing participatory engagement and the utilization of locally available resources. Conducted in Bendungan VII Hamlet, Yogyakarta, the intervention involved 38 community members and was implemented through four stages: community asset mapping, collaborative planning, educational outreach, and hands-on training in producing lemongrass-based mosquito repellent mist. The findings demonstrate a significant improvement in participants’ knowledge and practical competencies. Approximately 90% of participants were able to accurately explain the production process, while 95% successfully produced the repellent independently. Participants also expressed willingness to replicate and disseminate the practice within their community. This study underscores the effectiveness of integrating community empowerment frameworks with eco-friendly health interventions in addressing vector-borne diseases. The use of locally sourced herbal resources not only supports sustainable dengue prevention but also enhances community resilience and self-reliance.

Abstract

Most teachers at MIN 5 Magelang have difficulty creating HOTS (high order thinking skills) questions due to limited conceptual understanding, lack of specialized training, limited time, and scarce learning resources. These factors make it challenging for teachers to design questions with a high cognitive level that align with Bloom's taxonomy and the learning context. Learning assessment skills are among the essential competencies teachers must possess. Compiling HOTS questions is a critical skill for teachers in the 21st century to prepare students for future challenges. This community service employs a unique service learning method by applying concentrated experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization, and active experimentation. This approach emphasizes collaboration and real-life experience, enabling teachers not only to learn theory but also to practice together. The results show an increase in learning assessment skills in compiling HOTS questions based on various indicators, including understanding HOTS questions, their characteristics, question levels, and Bloom's taxonomy.
