Abstract

Social media has intensified the circulation of skincare messages that combine health education with product promotion. This study examines how skincare advertising content on TikTok and Instagram constructs meanings of education and marketing through visual, verbal, and audiovisual signs. The study applies a qualitative semiotic approach based on Charles Sanders Peirce's triadic model of sign, object, and interpretant. The research objects are skincare-related advertising and review contents from Instagram @skincarewanita.id and TikTok @hallo.manis, selected purposively because they display product comparison, recommendation, and educational claims. Data were collected through content observation, screenshot documentation, caption analysis, and audience-comment reading. The results show that Instagram tends to construct skincare messages through static visual comparison, carousel narratives, product labels, and concise claim texts, whereas TikTok builds persuasion through creator performance, spoken testimony, trending audio, facial expression, and fast-paced editing. Both platforms use educational signs such as ingredient explanations, skin-type categories, and usage tips; however, these signs often operate simultaneously as promotional cues that direct audiences toward particular products. The study concludes that the meaning of skincare education in social media advertising is not neutral, because it is shaped by persuasive commercial codes, influencer credibility, and platform-specific forms of attention.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the communication strategies employed by health cadres in stunting prevention in Pejagan Village. This study used a qualitative, descriptive approach to gain a deeper understanding of the communication process between health cadres and the community. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. The results indicate that health cadres implemented various communication strategies, such as outreach at integrated health posts (Posyandu), interpersonal communication, and door-to-door visits. Furthermore, the use of communication media such as leaflets, KIA (Child Health Information) books, and social media contributed to the dissemination of information to the community. However, challenges remain, including low public awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle and limited data on stunted toddlers. Therefore, a more adaptive and sustainable communication strategy is needed to ensure a more effective stunting prevention program.

Abstract

Mental health has become a critical concern for university students, particularly those involved in student organizations who balance rigorous academic demands with organizational responsibilities. Grounded in the framework of health communication, this study examines how organizational communication influences the mental well-being of student group members. A qualitative phenomenological approach was employed, utilizing purposive sampling to select six participants with active experience in university student organizations. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and field observations. The findings reveal that communication within these groups is primarily bidirectional, characterized by openness, mutual respect, and active engagement. Effective communication facilitates seamless information sharing, constructive feedback, conflict resolution, and emotional reassurance. Furthermore, student organizations function as vital support networks, providing encouragement, empathy, and practical assistance to members navigating academic stress or personal challenges. While supportive communication fosters a sense of security, belonging, and comfort, poor communication leads to confusion, interpersonal conflict, and emotional distress. In conclusion, organizational communication plays a pivotal role in safeguarding student mental health within academic and extracurricular environments. Cultivating an organizational culture rooted in open dialogue, empathy, and mutual support establishes a positive environment that enhances overall well-being. These insights underscore the necessity of enhancing health communication strategies within student organizations as a proactive measure to prevent psychological distress and promote holistic student well-being.

Abstract

The habit of staying up late (begadang) among university students has become a prevalent phenomenon with significant negative impacts on physical health, cognitive function, emotional stability, and academic performance. This study aims to analyze health communication strategies in reducing the habit of staying up late among students at Universitas Trunodjoyo Madura. Using a qualitative approach through a literature review combined with questionnaire data from 20 respondents across various faculties at UTM, the findings reveal that 65% of respondents frequently stay up late and 90% access social media at night before sleeping. The primary drivers include academic pressure, habitual gadget use, and social influence. Social media dominates as the main source of health information (80%). Effective health communication strategies identified include psychoeducation and sleep literacy, social media health campaigns, peer counseling, and institutional sleep hygiene policies. These integrated strategies are expected to raise students' awareness and promote healthier sleep habits among students at Universitas Trunodjoyo Madura.

Abstract

The evolution of social media has brought major changes in how the public obtains information, including reproductive health data. TikTok has emerged as a widely used platform for educational content due to its brief, engaging, and digestible videos that resonate with the younger generation. Dr. Boyke Dian Nugraha is a prominent figure actively providing reproductive health education on this platform. This study aims to discover how Communication Science students at Universitas  Trunodjoyo Madura interpret Dr. Boyke's reproductive health messages on TikTok and to identify the factors influencing this meaning-making process. Utilizing a qualitative approach rooted in Stuart Hall’s reception analysis, informants were selected via purposive sampling. The criteria included active UTM Communication Science students who use TikTok and have accessed Dr. Boyke’s reproductive health content. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews, non-participatory observation, and documentation. The results indicate that students decode reproductive health messages into three distinct reading positions: dominant-hegemonic, negotiated, and oppositional. Variations in interpretation are driven by personal experience, existing knowledge of reproductive health, social environments, and the intensity of social media usage. These findings highlight TikTok's significant potential as an educational tool for youth reproductive health. However, message effectiveness is determined not just by content, but by the audience's background and characteristics during interpretation.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the communication resilience demonstrated by Hepatitis B survivors after overcoming the critical stages of their illness, particularly when dealing with social stigma. Chronic diseases not only affect physical health but also generate psychological and social challenges due to prejudice and limited public understanding. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, this research investigates the communication experiences of two female Hepatitis B survivors who have encountered stigmatizing attitudes within their social environment. Buzzanell’s (2010) Communication Resilience Theory is used as the analytical framework to examine how individuals reconstruct their identities, maintain social relationships, and create new meanings in response to adversity. The findings reveal that both participants experienced substantial communication challenges, including social exclusion, negative remarks, and misunderstandings arising from inadequate health literacy among community members. Despite these difficulties, they exhibited communication resilience through several strategies, such as controlling the disclosure of personal information, relying on family support, and developing more constructive self-narratives. These findings suggest that resilience extends beyond mere survival; it represents an active communicative process through which survivors adapt, recover, and continue to build meaningful lives despite experiencing social stigma.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of digital technologies has fundamentally transformed the landscape of business communication, enabling organizations to interact with stakeholders through multiple digital platforms in real time. This study aims to examine the implementation of positive and negative business messages in the digital era and analyze their implications for stakeholder relationships and digital reputation management. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed using content analysis of business communication practices across social media, email marketing, mobile applications, and customer service interactions. Data were gathered from secondary sources, including corporate digital communications, academic literature, and documented business communication cases.  The findings indicate that positive business messages—such as appreciation, promotional information, service confirmations, and customer recognition—contribute significantly to stakeholder engagement, customer satisfaction, and brand loyalty when delivered through personalized and interactive communication strategies. Conversely, negative business messages, including complaint handling, service failures, rejection notices, and crisis responses, require greater levels of transparency, empathy, responsiveness, and accountability to minimize reputational risks. Furthermore, the study reveals that the increasing speed of information dissemination in digital environments amplifies both positive and negative communication outcomes. While positive messages can enhance brand advocacy and strengthen organizational image , poorly managed negative messages may rapidly escalate into reputational crises due to the viral nature of social media platforms. This research highlights the continuing relevance of traditional business communication principles while emphasizing the necessity of adapting message strategies to contemporary digital audiences. Ultimately, effective communication in the digital age requires organizations to balance technological efficiency with human-centered approaches.

Abstract

The rapid growth of digital technology has transformed business communication practices, particularly among Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) utilizing social media platforms such as Instagram. This study aims to examine the influence of digital communication strategies on consumer purchase intention among SMEs operating on Instagram. Using a qualitative descriptive approach through a literature review method, this study analyzes previous research, academic literature, and digital marketing practices related to communication strategies, consumer behavior, and social media marketing. The findings indicate that effective digital communication strategies, including attractive visual content, persuasive messaging, audience engagement, content consistency, and interactive communication, significantly contribute to increasing consumer purchase intention. Instagram features such as Stories, Reels, Live Streaming, and Direct Messages provide opportunities for SMEs to establish stronger relationships with consumers and enhance brand awareness. The study concludes that digital communication strategies play a crucial role in influencing consumer attitudes, strengthening trust, and encouraging purchase intentions in digital business environments. The findings provide practical insights for SMEs seeking to optimize communication effectiveness and improve marketing performance through social media platforms.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze rhetorical strategies in health communication delivered through social media, particularly in Dr. Tirta’s TikTok content regarding coffee consumption patterns. The background of this study is based on the increasing use of social media as a source of health information, as well as the high level of coffee consumption among the public, which is not always accompanied by an adequate understanding of healthy consumption patterns. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using text discourse analysis to examine the verbal and nonverbal elements in the video entitled “How Many Times a Day Does Dr. Tirta Drink Coffee?”. The analysis is conducted using Aristotle’s rhetorical theory, which encompasses ethos, logos, and pathos. The findings indicate that Dr. Tirta utilizes ethos through his credibility as a medical professional and his authentic communication style, logos through the delivery of fact-based information and medical reasoning, and pathos through an emotional approach that resonates with the audience’s daily experiences. The combination of these three rhetorical elements results in health messages that are persuasive, easy to understand, and relevant to the audience’s context. This study confirms that rhetorical strategies play an important role in enhancing the effectiveness of health communication on social media.
