Abstract

Cooperatives are a type of business organization that is owned and controlled democratically by its members. One of the key principles of cooperatives is to prioritize the social and economic well-being of their members and the communities in which they operate. Multipurpose cooperatives in the Philippines are cooperatives that provide a wide range of services to their members, such as credit, savings, insurance, and other services. These also perform the functions of financing and marketing. Moreover, they serve as the savings structure and source of household and agricultural supplies of its members whose capital contribution is the source of the resources of cooperatives in the savings, loans, and marketing sector along with the profit from their credit, marketing, and other economic activities (Perilla et al., 2009). As cooperatives promote economic development and poverty reduction, it is vital that these organizations sustain their operations in order that they will be able to continue these vital roles. One important means by which cooperatives will succeed is for them to develop and nurture commitment among their members (Fulton, 1999). In his study on cooperatives and member commitment in 1999, Fulton defined cooperative member commitment as "the willingness of a member to contribute to the cooperative's success through participation, financial support, and advocacy, and the degree to which that willingness is sustained over time." According to Fulton, member commitment is a critical factor in the success of cooperatives. He argued that highly committed members are more likely to actively participate in the cooperative, contribute financially, and promote the cooperative to others. In contrast, members with low commitment are less likely to participate or support the cooperative, which can hinder its growth and sustainability. He further added that commitment is what differentiates a cooperative from investor-owned firms. The present study assessed the effect of member satisfaction on the influence of economic factors on member commitment among multipurpose cooperatives in Southern Leyte, Philippines. Awoke (2021) refers to member satisfaction as satisfaction of the members in the performance of the cooperatives. Economic factors, on the other hand, include quality products, fair prices, and access to resources through cooperative membership. The study employed quantitative research design. It was conducted in the province of Southern Leyte. The province is situated in the southern portion of Leyte Island and includes Limasawa and Panaon Islands. Based on the Cities and Municipalities Competitiveness Index by the National Competitiveness Council through the Regional Competitiveness Committees, Southern Leyte ranked 63rd with its score of 28.41. The ranking is based on the sum of scores on 4 Pillars: Economic Dynamism, Government Efficiency, Infrastructure, and Resiliency. The respondents of the study are the members of the seven large multipurpose cooperatives in Southern Leyte as classified by the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA). There are 255 original number of observations. 15 observations with zero standard deviation were excluded from the analysis. Moreover, 8 observations with more than 15% missing data were also excluded. The total number of observations included in the study is 232. Missing values were treated using mean value replacement (Ringle, Wende, & Will, 2005). The study used PLS-SEM to analyze the data gathered from the survey instrument adapted from the extant literature. The respondents of the study are mostly female (66.67%), married (67.39%), and mainly belonging to 35-44 years old (22.27%); 45-54 years old (28.82%); and 55-64 years old (18.78%). Most are well educated, college graduate (46.93%) and are literate, high school graduate (31.14%). Most of the respondents are employed (60.53%) with a monthly income of less than P9,520 (56.11%) and between P9,520-P19,040 (28.05%). In addition, most of them got their income from salary (62.10%). Findings indicate that economic factors have a significant positive influence on member satisfaction. The direct path coefficient indicates that economic factors positively and significantly influence member satisfaction. This implies that economic benefits that multipurpose cooperative members receive from the cooperative has a significant positive influence on the satisfaction of members. In addition, relationship between economic factors, member satisfaction, and member commitment suggests a significant but small effect of economic factors on member satisfaction, which in turn influences member commitment. This suggests that economic factors indirectly affect member commitment through its influence on member satisfaction. This may indicate that while economic factors themselves may not have a direct and substantial effect on member commitment, they do impact member satisfaction, which in turn affects commitment levels. This work provides actionable insights for managing multipurpose cooperatives (MPCs) with the goal of increasing member commitment. The findings highlight the necessity of promoting member satisfaction through a variety of means, such as enhancing service quality, assuring fair pricing, and providing access to resources. By resolving these issues, MPCs can indirectly increase member commitment, adding to the cooperative's long-term viability and success.

Abstract

Illegal tree cutting is a pervasive and destructive global problem that leads to deforestation, loss of biodiversity, habitat destruction, and contributes to climate change. It poses a significant threat to the environment, including fragile ecosystems and the vital services they provide, such as carbon sequestration and clean water supply. Traditional methods of detecting illegal tree cutting often rely on manual patrols, which are costly, time-consuming, and can be ineffective, especially in remote and challenging terrains. By utilizing AI and solar power, the project offers an efficient and scalable alternative to monitor and detect tree cutting activities in areas where human presence may be limited or impractical. TensorFlow Lite, as a lightweight deep learning framework, enables real-time inference on low-power devices like the Raspberry Pi.  The functionality of the robot as a tree cutting detector was tested five times with different types of tree cutting tools. Success rate was determined by its functionality; 100% success rates in detecting tree cutting and non-tree cutting activities and sending an SMS message after detection indicates proper functionality. By using a monitor it can display the accuracy of the device’s detection through a message on the top left corner of the camera’s screen. After at least sixty seconds of the device continuously detecting tree cutting activities it sends an SMS to the registered mobile number alerting the recipient of tree cutting activities being detected.

Abstract

Growing public awareness of environmental issues is promoting acceptance of green consumption trends. To improve their reputation and draw in new customers, businesses are increasingly producing eco-friendly products. This, in turn, encourages consumers, who are becoming more informed about green marketing, to buy environmentally friendly products. The study aims at finding green marketing awareness and the extent of consumers' buying behavior toward green products. A purposive sampling technique identified 338 residents from four out of nine municipalities in Iloilo's third congressional district. Data was collected using a researcher-designed questionnaire, divided into two parts: the first focusing on the respondents' personal information and the second assessing their awareness of green products and buying behaviors. Data collection occurred from May 2022 to June 2023, targeting individuals who had previously purchased green products. The sample was categorized by age, gender, employment status, income, education, civil status, and product type. Quota sampling ensured equal representation from each municipality. Results indicate that consumers showed a 'High' level of awareness regarding green products, with their buying behavior reflecting a “great extent” of alignment with sustainable consumption values. The findings highlight a significant relationship between awareness levels and purchasing behaviors. Consumers demonstrate a high level of awareness regarding green products, which significantly influences their purchasing behavior. This strong correlation indicates that increased knowledge about environmental issues leads to more substantial consumer engagement in sustainable practices, highlighting the importance of ongoing education and effective marketing strategies to promote eco-friendly choices.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to assess the level of acceptance of katuray (sesbania grandiflora) pickles, specifically focusing on its sensory characteristics such as color, scent, taste, and texture. The study utilized a quasi-experimental methodology, with three different sample preparations, each with predetermined measures for the trial. A total of 50 persons from Bontoc, Mountain Province took part in data collection utilizing consumer-type panels. A 9-point hedonic scale was used to assess the acceptability of the katuray pickles. The participants were able to assess their degree of preference for each sensory characteristic using this scale. The data was subjected to statistical analysis, specifically analysis of variance (ANOVA), in order to interpret the data and ascertain the significance of variations in sensory qualities. The findings demonstrated that the flavor of katuray pickles was remarkably noteworthy, eliciting favorable comments from the subjects. In contrast, there were no notable disparities detected in the sensory characteristics of hue, fragrance, and consistency. This suggests that although flavor played an important role in determining the acceptability of the katuray pickles, other sensory characteristics did not have a substantial influence on the overall acceptability. This study indicates potential avenues for additional research and advancement. The researchers suggest exploring additional additives to enhance the pickled product. Furthermore, this study proposes further investigation into the unique characteristics of the katuray flower. Ultimately, this research proposes conducting a feasibility analysis in order to have a more comprehensive understanding of the market potential of the product that has been created.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the damage sustained by the gun barrel's throat region over a long period of use, shedding light on the wear characteristics, and providing valuable insights into the long-term effects of high-pressure gas exposure during firing. To achieve this objective, the appearance of the gun barrel's throat region was characterized using forensic microscopy techniques. Visual and microscopic examinations were conducted on five (5) gun barrels with ten years or less of service usage and five (5) gun barrels with over ten years of service usage from the Philippine National Police to assess the degree of wear in the barrel’s throat region. The findings revealed varying degrees of wear in the barrel throat regions. Firearms with 10 years or less of service usage exhibited moderate corrosion, narrow cracks, and minimal soot particle presence while firearms with over 10 years of service usage showed severe corrosion, deep cracks, scattered potholes, superficial scraped surfaces, and heavy soot particle presence. This research contributes to the understanding of barrel performance, maintenance, and potential hazards associated with aging firearms, thus providing novel insights into the long-term effects of high-pressure gas exposure during firing. By examining the changes in material properties and surface roughness of the gun barrel’s throat region, this study seeks to improve the understanding of how repeated firing impacts gun barrel performance and longevity. This, in turn, may aid in developing future maintenance practices to enhance firearm durability and safety.

Abstract

The focus of the study was to determine the relationship between artificial intelligence usage and academic performance in two different fields: the College of Marine Engineering (CME) and the College of Arts, Science, and Education (CASE). Descriptive correlational method and researcher-made questionnaire was used to gather the data of this study. The respondents were the one hundred seventy-nine (179) the 1st year and 2nd year students of the College of Maritime Education and the thirty-focus (34) College of Arts, Sciences, and Education departments of the Colegio de la Purisima Concepcion enrolled in the first semester of the academic year 2023-2024. The data gathered were analysed using the frequency, percentage and mean as descriptive statistics, t-test and Pearson r for correlational inferential for determining the significant associations of the dependent and independent variables. The study shows that there is no significant difference in the level of artificial intelligence when grouped according to age, sex, year level, and course program. Students in CME and CASE were both using artificial intelligence results as high. For the students in both course program artificial intelligence is very helpful when it comes to their study. There is a significant relationship between the level of artificial intelligence usage and the academic performance of students. The Pearson’s r value of 0.358 and a significance value of 0.000 (lower than the alpha level of 0.05) lead to the rejection of the null hypothesis, indicating a significant relationship between these variables. Additionally, the conclusion drawn, stating that “the higher the level of artificial intelligence usage, the higher the level of academic performance of students.’ This suggest that as the level of AI usage increase, there’s a tendency for academic performance to increase as well.
