Abstract

Study of kitab kuning (classical Islamic texts) is a distinctive characteristic of traditional Islamic boarding schools (pondok pesantren). Mastery of kitab kuning requires a solid understanding of Arabic grammar (nahwu-sharaf), which many students often find difficult both in theory and practice. The Amtsilati method offers a simplified and systematic approach designed to assist beginners in understanding the Qur’an and kitab kuning. Pondok Pesantren Hidayatul Mubtadi’in Amtsilati Gurah Kediri is among the few pesantren that implement the Amtsilati method in their learning curriculum, whereas most traditional pesantren rarely adopt this method. This study aims to explore the accelerated method of learning kitab kuning using the Amtsilati approach at this pesantren. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through field observations, interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that (1) there are two main systems used in teaching kitab kuning with the Amtsilati method: the regular system and the accelerated (intensive) system. The instructional process emphasizes a structured learning system, modeling approach, repetition, and positive reinforcement through rewards; (2) the impact of this method includes accelerated Arabic comprehension, increased self-confidence, higher motivation and enthusiasm, strengthened practical skills, enhanced responsibility, and reliance on a supportive system.

Abstract

Islamic education holds a strategic function in shaping the religious character of the younger generation amid the social dynamics and cultural diversity of Indonesia. In the context of a pluralistic religious life, Islamic education not only serves as a medium for transmitting religious knowledge but also as an instrument for internalizing moderate sharia values grounded in the principles of wasathiyyah (balance), tawazun (justice), and tasamuh (tolerance). The central problem examined in this study is how Islamic education can function as an instrument for internalizing moderate sharia values to strengthen religious moderation among youth, as well as identifying the supporting and inhibiting factors that influence this process within educational settings. This study employs a literature review method with a descriptive-analytic and reflective approach. Data were collected from national and international academic journals, scholarly books, and policy documents related to Islamic education and religious moderation from the period 2018–2025. The approaches used include conceptual, comparative, and contextual analyses of value education theory, religious socialization, and models of moderation-based learning. The main obstacles identified include gaps between policy and teaching practices, limited teacher capacity, and the influence of digital media that lacks value-based guidance. The study concludes that Islamic education plays a crucial role as a social and ideological transformation agent in strengthening religious moderation among the younger generation. Through a humanistic, dialogic, and adaptive educational approach aligned with contemporary developments, moderate sharia values can be internalized deeply and sustainably, thereby fostering a peaceful, inclusive, and just religious life in Indonesia.

Abstract

Human resource management is a crucial aspect of any organization. Personnel management becomes important in the context of personnel empowerment. Personnel management from an Islamic educational perspective can be explained as follows: (1) Personnel who have competence. (2) Personnel who carry out tasks. (3) Personnel who are professional. (4) Personnel who have leadership skills. The steps in the personnel preparation process as the implementation of personnel management in Islamic education are: (1) Human Resources Planning [QS. Al-Mujadilah: 11]. (2) Withdrawal or Recruitment [QS. Al-Baqarah: 159]. (3) Selection [QS. Al-Qashash:26]. (4) Introduction and Orientation [Al-An'am:165]. (5) Training and Development [QS. Al-Isra: 70]. (6) Work Implementation Assessment [QS. Az-Zalzalah:7-8]. (7) Providing Remuneration and Awards [QS. Al-Qashash]. (8) Career Development [QS. Al-An'am: 132]. The conclusion is that personnel development must be colored by Islamic values as an implementation of personnel management in Islamic education.

Abstract

This study comprehensively examines the socio-religious da'wah model through the Ramadan Safari program by the Lirboyo Islamic Boarding School in North Kotabumi District, North Lampung. The research uses a qualitative approach with the type of field research, with data collection techniques in the form of participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The focus of this research is to analyze da'wah strategies, implementation processes, and their impact on the socio-religious life of heterogeneous communities. The results of the study show that the effectiveness of da'wah is not only determined by the delivery of religious materials, but also by communicative and adaptive social approaches (mu'asyarah). The students are able to integrate Islamic knowledge with the social reality of the community so that da'wah is applicable and responsive to the needs of the community. The internalization of the values of Ahlussunnah Wal Jama'ah An-Nahdliyah such as tawassuth, tasamuh, and tawazun, as well as the strengthening of the Islamic paradigm as a blessing for all nature, plays a role in building religious moderation. This program has a real impact in the form of increasing religious activities, changing people's behavior towards a better religious life, and increasing trust in Islamic boarding schools. Thus, Safari Ramadan can be a relevant socio-religious model of da'wah to strengthen spiritual and social stability in a multicultural society.
ECOSUFISM IN SERAT CENTHINI AND ITS ACTUALIZATION: A THEOLOGICAL ANALYSIS OF THE HUMAN–NATURE–GOD RELATIONSHIP IN THE JAVANESE SUFI TRADITION: Case Study: Hifdzu Bi’ah Programme, Desa Ngantru) Panji Nur Muhammad Sholih; Mauluddin Rahmat; Muhammad Ahsin Maulana; Abdurrahman Sholeh

Abstract

This study examines the dimension of ecosufism embedded within Serat Centhini through the lens of Islamic philosophy and theology, and investigates its actualization in contemporary environmental practice through a case study of the Hifdzu Bi’ah programme conducted by KKN-T students of Universitas Al-Qolam Malang in Desa Ngantru, Kecamatan Ngantang, Kabupaten Malang (2025). Employing Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics for primary textual analysis of Serat Centhini and document content analysis of the KKN-T field report as empirical data, the study yields three principal findings. First, Serat Centhini contains a robust proto-ecosufist foundation grounded in the doctrine of wahdat al-wujud expressed through manunggaling kawulo-Gusti, the concept of khalifah, and the Javanese cosmic ethic Memayu Hayuning Bawana. Second, these classical values exhibit significant theological continuity with contemporary ecosufism frameworks articulated by Nasr (1996) and Suwito (2014), while also undergoing productive transformations at the methodological and institutional levels. Third, the Hifdzu Bi’ah programme demonstrates that Serat Centhini’s ecosufist values can be operationalized through participatory Islamic community forums, particularly through the Fatayat and Muslimat NU women’s religious networks, although structural challenges including the absence of permanent institutional arrangements continue to limit long-term sustainability. This research contributes to the development of a Nusantara ecosufism model that bridges classical Islamic-Javanese intellectual heritage with pressing contemporary ecological challenges, offering an authentically local foundation for Islamic environmental theology in Indonesia.

Abstract

The development of digital media has brought about changes in communication patterns, literacy culture, and da’wah practices within Islamic boarding schools. The emergence of social media and visual communication has prompted Islamic boarding schools to adapt to advancements in modern communication technology without neglecting the Islamic educational values that form their core identity. This study employs a literature review method using a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were obtained through a review of various scientific articles, books, and relevant studies related to digital literacy, participatory culture, digital media communication, visual da’wah, and pesantren education over the past five years. The findings of this study indicate that the development of digital media has transformed the role of santri from mere consumers of information to producers of digital media through journalism and graphic design activities within the pesantren environment. Extracurricular journalism activities play a role in strengthening the culture of literacy, critical thinking skills, communication ethics, and public communication skills among santri. Meanwhile, extracurricular graphic design activities serve as a space to develop visual da’wah and represent the digital identity of santri through the production of Islamic content on social media. On the other hand, the development of digital culture in Islamic boarding schools also presents challenges in the form of instant communication culture, low information verification skills, and issues of digital communication ethics. Therefore, strengthening digital literacy based on Islamic values is crucial to ensure that digital culture within the boarding school environment continues to develop in a critical, creative, and ethical manner.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the psychological dynamics of Islamic boarding school students in coping with academic pressure and to explore the role of awareness of fitrah as a spiritual approach to alleviating such pressure. The approach used in this study is descriptive qualitative research with a case study design. The research subjects consisted of ten students at PPTQ Annasuchiyyah Kudus, who were selected through purposive sampling. Data collection techniques included semi-structured interviews, participatory observation, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman model through the stages of data reduction, presentation, and verification. The results of the study indicate that the students experience academic stress stemming from the burden of memorization, school assignments, and a demanding pesantren schedule. However, awareness of fitrah—which encompasses an awareness of spiritual, intellectual, and physical potential—plays a crucial role in helping students balance their emotions, find meaning in life, and enhance their mental resilience. The conclusion of this study confirms that fostering an awareness of fitrah is an effective approach to helping students cope with academic stress; therefore, it is highly recommended that this approach be integrated into the character and spiritual development curriculum at Islamic boarding schools.

Abstract

Religious moderation in the perspective of Islamic archipelago is a concrete manifestation of the concept of wasathiyah (middle way) in Islam. This concept represents moderate Islamic thought that prioritizes the values of tawassuth, tawazun, I'tidal, and tasammuh as a tolerant and harmonious religious style and becomes  the  foundation  in  building  moderation  practices  in  Indonesia.  This research aims to analyze the concept of wasathiyah (moderate) thought in Islam Nusantara and how these ideas contribute to the formation of Islamic moderation in Indonesia. This research uses a qualitative approach with a literature study method. The results of the study show that Islam Nusantara as the concept of wasathiyah thinking has a major role in fostering religious moderation in Indonesia. Islam Nusantara is able to answer the challenges of the times such as Radicalism and Intolerance. This research is expected to make an academic contribution to strengthen  moderate  Islamic  discourse  and  become  a  reference  in  efforts  to maintain  religious  harmony  and  strengthen  social  integration  in  the  midst  of diversity.

Abstract

In the era of disruption, the rise of pragmatism and materialist mindsets has significantly shifted youth orientations toward transactional careers. Conversely, Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) consistently maintain an alternative microcosm rooted in total devotion. This study aims to explore the reactualization of the local philosophy "Bondo, Bahu, Pikir, Lek Perlu Sak Nyowone Pisan" (Wealth, Physical Effort, Mind, and Life if Necessary) among university students who concurrently serve as teachers (mahasiswi-guru) at Pondok Pesantren Al Iman Putri Ponorogo, Indonesia. Utilizing a qualitative approach with a comparative case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews with four ustadzah (teacher-students) representing the Junior High (MTs) and Senior High (MA) school levels. The findings demonstrate that this cultural philosophy functions as a powerful form of spiritual capital and a teocentric immunity system that dismantles transactional economic logic. In micro-comparative terms, the MTs level predominantly demands physical mobilization and structural discipline (bahu) due to the psychological instability of early adolescent students. Meanwhile, the MA level primarily exhausts cognitive-psychological capacities (pikir) as teachers must navigate critical Gen-Z mindsets through mentor-like guidance rather than authoritarian approaches. When facing extreme burnout from the double burden of completing university degrees at UIN Ponorogo and fulfilling intense teaching rosters, the ultimate dimension of "sak nyowone pisan" emerges as the anchor of transendental resilience. It dissolves individual ego into absolute sincerity, transforming psychological pressure into worship. This study underscores that the internalization of kiai's existential advice serves as a vital fortress for the sustainability of character-based Islamic education against modern pragmatic waves.

Abstract

This study explores how an English teacher negotiates professional identity in a pesantren-based secondary school. It focuses on the institutional, cultural-religious, and personal factors that shape teacher identity, as well as the strategies used to align English language teaching with pesantren values. This research employed a qualitative case study design at Madrasah Aliyah Pondok Pesantren Zainul Bahar, Wringin, Bondowoso, East Java. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observation, and document analysis, and were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings show that the teacher’s professional identity is dynamic, contextual, and hybrid. The teacher maintained English learning objectives while adapting materials, filtering culturally sensitive topics, integrating Islamic values, using code-switching, and managing classroom interaction through adab-based practices. The study concludes that English teacher identity in a pesantren context is constructed through continuous negotiation between academic goals and religious-cultural expectations. These findings highlight the need for culturally responsive English pedagogy in Islamic educational settings.
