Abstract

This study deals with the language maintenance of Mandailingnese in Tanjungbalai. It usesqualitative research design. It is conducted descriptively. This study aims to examine the types of language maintenance by Mandailingnese people in Tanjungbalai, find out the ways in maintaining the Mandailingnese language in Tanjungbalai and find out the reasons why the speakers of Mandailingnese people maintain their language in Tanjungbalai. The subjects were 10teenagers (boys and girls) of Mandailingnese. The use of instruments in this study were observation and interview. The observation were used to examine the types of language maintenance by Mandailingnese people in Tanjungbalai in order to describe the ways of Mandailingnese language maintenance. The interview was used to gain the reasons of Mandailingnese language maintainancein Tanjungbalai. The theories of Fasold, Fishman and Holmes are used in this study. The data were analyzed by Miles, Huberman and Saldana (2014). There are four types of language maintenancein Tanjungbalai namely; low maintenance, medium maintenance, strong maintenance and extreme maintenance. There are two ways to maintain Mandailingnese language in Tanjungbalai namely; join the  community and teach the language to younger sister/brother. There are four reasons why they maintain their language namely; to express their identity as Mandailingnese people, to achieve self pride as Mandailingnese people, to tell certain issue and to creat closer relationship. Analysis of data clearly indicates that Mandailingnese language maintenance were done in Tanjungbalai.Keyword : language maintenance, reasons for language maintenance, Mandailingnese in Tanjungbalai

Abstract

This research addresses language shift of the Javanese in Stabat. It is aimed at finding out the factors influence language shift of Javanese, the pattern of the language shift, and the reasons of Javanese shift into Bahasa Indonesia. The data were obtained from the Javanese families living in Stabat. The study employs qualitative research design with a single case study to get the understanding on this study. The subjects of the study were 10 Javanese families in Stabat. The subjects were divided into two groups, namely parents and children. The reason for dividing the subjects into two groups is because language shift happens across the generation. Questionnaires and interview were used to gain the data. The data were analyzed by using data collection, data reduction, data display and data verification. The findings show that there are eight factors which influence Javanese shift into Bahasa Indonesia in Stabat, namely bilingualism, migration, economic, social, demographic and institutional factors, attitude, and lack of speaking competence. The dominant factor which affects the shift is the institutional factor. The analysis data indicates that the shift occurs in two patterns; in the pattern of relationship between parents and children, and the relationship among children. The status of Bahasa Indonesia as the official language and social success are the reasons for Javanese to shift into Indonesian language. Key words: shift, Javanese, bilingualism, attitude.

Abstract

Proverb is one of many ways for people in communication. Linguistics and people cognition play vital role for people in constructing proverbs and it also depends on their natural background knowledge. Figurative meaning as a component which found in proverbs gives unexpected orientation toward subject matter. This research deals with the figurative meanings of Peribahasa Text Book. This study revealed the investigation of the types of figurative meanings in Peribahasa text book. This research is conducted by the qualitative research. The data are analyzed by applying interactive models of Miles, Huberman and Saldana. Based on the analysis data then there are another six figurative meanings beyond personification, simile, metaphor, metonymy, and synecdoche , they are Irony 26 proverbs (7.1%), Hyperbole 23 proverbs (6.3%), Symbol 15 proverbs (4.1%), Understatement 6 proverbs (1.6%), Paradox 7 proverbs (2%), and Allegory 1 proverb (0.3%) and the rest refers to the construction identity, such as reiteration formula, cultural figurative expression and proverbial reality. This implied that proverbs were created by genius imagination, by chosing the words, then combining them and producing the idea formulation in the form of scenic series of words and full of aesthetics.Keywords: Proverbs, Figurative Meanings, Construction Identity

Abstract

This study deals with the implementation of Curriculum 2013 in English teaching learning process at SMA Negeri 1 Lubuk Pakam. The aims of this study were to describe the teachers’ effort in English teaching-learning process by applying scientific approach, to describe the teachers’ impelementation in English teaching-learning process by applying scientific approach, and to explain the teachers’ reasons to for the implement the scientific approach on that way. This study conducted by using qualitative research design. The source data of this study were teachers at XI IPA 1 and X IPS 1 SMA Negeri 1 Lubuk Pakam comprised two teachers. The data of this study was the implementation of Curriculum 2013 on teaching-learning English process in the classroom. The data was analyzed by using Interactive Model by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana. Based on data analysis, it was found that the teachers did not implement all the curriculum 2013 steps correctly,  the teachers’ reasons for the implement curriculum 2013 on their way because the teachers had many experience in teaching, curriculum 2013 was done only because of the rule from the school. Other reasons were because they had short time in teaching and lacked of the books for material in curriculum 2013.   Keywords: curriculum 2013, implementation, English teaching learning process, scientific approach

Abstract

This study was concerned with the use of speech acts in ILC (Indonesia Lawyers Club) Talk show program. The objective of this study was to describe the types of speech acts used by the host and the guests of ILC. Qualitative content analysis method was applied in this study. The sources of data were the host and the guests in ILC. The data of the study were the sentences and the phrases gathered from the conversation in the episodes of ILC. The finding of this study showed that four types of speech acts, namely rex`x` presentative, directive, commissive, and expressive were used by the host and the guests of ILC, while declarative speech act was not found at all in the episodes of that talk show program. The dominant type of speech act used by the host was directive, while the guests dominantly used representative speech act. Keywords: Speech Acts, Indonesia Lawyers Club, Talk Show Program. Abstract

This research was aimed at finding out the pragmatics acquisition of five-years old Indonesian children in casual conversation. The objectives of this descriptive qualitative research were to: (1) find the type of the pragmatics acquired by a five-years-old child, (2) to find out the way of how do the five years old Indonesian children acquired  the pragmatics in casual conversation, and (3) to find out the reason of why do the five years old Indonesian children acquired  the pragmatics in this way. The data were obtained from three Indonesian boy children who lived in Batakness environment where most of their friends spoke in Batakness language. This study was located at lintongnihuta, Humbang Hasundutan regency. In collecting the data. this study applied documentation with audio visual recorder as the instrument of collecting the data. The technique of data analysis used in this study was descriptive technique, and the data were described trough the process of transcribing the data and reducing the data by the process of selecting, focusing, simplifying and transforming the transcripts of the data, after that, displaying the data and at last drawing the conclusions. The finding indicates that the subject of this study had mastered pragmatics, were the types of pragmatics acquired are exchange structures, turn taking, repairs, and cohesion. While the most dominant pragmatics used was turn taking. The way of  five years-old Indonesian children acquire the pragmatics in casual conversation were by united the environment’s effect, culture, habits, mood, and their focus on their own mind, needs, and what they were thinking about. And the dominant affected by focusing to their mind only. Then based on the interview with their parents and other caregivers, it’s found that the reason of using pragmatics in highest frequency were because the children often focused to the things in their mind only.Keywords: Pragmatics, Acquisition, Indonesian Children, Casual Conversation

Abstract

ABSTRACTLearning strategies is related with specific action taken by english learner and students to make learning process is easier, faster, more enjoyable to new situation. Learning strategies in the beginning used in the military system, but now then also used in education.The aim of this research is to describe similarities and differences with reference to the realizations of learning strategies used in the English online lerning to inclusive students at SMA Negri II Lubuk pakam. This research is conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data of this research are sentences containing realization of learning strategies in English online class to inclusive students. The sources of data are taken from 10 inclusive students and 2 English teachers at SMA Negri II Lubuk Pakam grade XI and XII. The inclusive students and English teachers are assumed to represent all inclusive learning both locally and provincially. Each of the learning strategies is represented by ten inclusive students for inclusive students two english teachers for all english teachers in inclusive classes. The data are analyzed by using interactive model in which sentences are analyzed with reference Heaver (2009) theory  adaptation of inclusive learning strategies. The findings indicate that there are similarities and diffrences with reference to the realizations of learning strategies in the English online learning to inclusive students. Keywords: Learning Strategies, English Learning, Online, Inclusive Students

Abstract

The objectives of the study are to describe whether : 1). Students’ vocabulary mastery taught by inferencing strategies (IS) higher than taught by Lexical Processing Strategies (LPSs) in students’ vocabulary achievement.2) Students’ who have high vocabulary mastery is significantly higher than students’ who have low vocabulary mastery in students’ vocabulary achievement. 3) The effect of simultaneously applying both Lexical Strategies and Vocabulary mastery on the students’ vocabulary achievement. An experimental research with factorial design 2x2 was used in this study. There was 80 students from grade X of 2017/2018 academic years of MAN 1 Takengon as sample of this study. The students divided in two groups. Each group consists of 40 students. The first group was treated by using Lexical Inferencing Strategies and the second group was treated by Lexical Processing Strategies. Vocabulary of the two groups was measured by giving questionnaire to classify the students having high and low vocabulary mastery, and achievement test measure by giving multiple choice test to know students’ achievement in vocabulary mastery. The data are analyzed by applying two-way ANOVA at the level significance ɑ = 0.05. The findings of the data shows that. 1) The students’ vocabulary mastery taught by using Lexical Inferencing Strategies was higher than that taught by using Lexical Processing Strategies, with Fobs (19.72) > Ftab (3.25). 2) The Vocabulary Achievement of the students who have high vocabulary mastery was higher than students who have low vocabulary mastery, with Fobs (2691.93) > Ftab (3.25). 3) There was significance interaction between teaching Lexical Strategies and Vocabulary Mastery on the students’ vocabulary achievement, with Fobs (3.27) > Ftable (3.25).

Abstract

This study is aimed to find out the factors in the pronunciation errors interference of Nias (First language; L1) with Indonesian as a (Second language; L2). The objectives of the study is to see how affect pronounciation errors interference of Niasnese L1 In Indonesian as a L2, to describe the types of pronunciation errors interference dominantly used by Niasnese speakers in Nias L1 In Indonesian as a L2 and understand why the pronounciation errors interference happen to the Niasnese in Indonesian as a L2. This research used a qualitative research to find out pronunciation errors interference of Niasnese native speakers. The data obtained from ten students and the parents of Nias speakers as the samples. Based on the observation result, it is found that the pronunciation errors interference at Nias in Indonesian as a L2: Deletion, addition and blends. There are three factors affect the Niasnese pronunciation error interference in Indonesian as a L2 in Sibolga, they are Intermarriage ( same culture marriage), The sound and the letters differences between Nias Language and Indonesian, Parents speak Nias language to the children or mother tongue, environment.
