Abstract

The aims of this study was to investigate the strategies of Angkolanese maintain Bahasa Angkola at Langgar Community in Kota Medan. The research was conducted by using qualitative design. The data of this study were the utterances of Angkolanese speakers. There were 20 participants of this research. The data were collected through observation, questionnaire and interview. The result of this study revealed that: There were three factors that affecting language maintenance proposed by Fishman (1991) in this study namely family language policy, Using Angkola language in their daily communication frequently, and using Angkola language in cultural activity like in wedding ceremony. The using of these strategies can be applied to the first and second generation. Meanwhile the third generation found the difficulties when facing the strategies. They tend to use bahasa Indonesia in their daily life because most of their time are spending at school and they are not aware of the cultural activity around them.Key words: Strategies of Language Maintenance, Bahasa Angkola, Langgar Community.

Abstract

This study is concerned with the structure of English classroom discourse in SMP Negeri 1 Tebing Tinggi. The objectives of this study were to describe the structures of English classroom discourse, to describe how the structures are linguistically realized and to reason for the realizations of the English class structure. The source of the data in this study was English teachers and also the students while the data are the utterances from the teacher and the students and semiotic markers as marked in the text. The instruments used for colleting data were video tape recorder and researcher’s fieldnote. The data were collected by observing and recording the utterances uttered by the teachers and students and writing all semiotics then classified them into types of exchanges as Sinclair and Coulthard theory. The research result mentioned that he structure of English classroom were teacher elicit, teacher direct, teacher information, boundary, pupil elicit, check, repeat, reinforce and reinitiating (II). These structures were dominantly realized by IR structure. English as a foreign language was also one point made the students afraid of uttering the utterances in teaching learning process.   Keywords: classroom discourse, pattern, Sinclair and Coulthard theory, structures.

Abstract

ABSTRACTA text can be only interpreted through a background information of other text, and this is where intertextuality emerged, to shape another text. This study investigates the realization of intertextuality in articles of opposite editorials related to Presidential Election 2019. The objectives of the study is to evaluate the ways of the intertextuality realized. This research applied qualitative research design. The data were complex clauses which contained of intertextuality from opposite editorials of four newspapers, namely Kompas, Media Indonesia, Analisa, and Waspada started from January 2nd until April 17th 2019. The data were analyzed by using content analysis technique proposed by Elo and Kyngas (2007). The findings showed that; there were five elements those caused intertextuality realized in opposite editorials, they were; paraphrasing, patchwriting, making implicit meaning, putting contrastive conjunction, and last, image building. Keywords: Intertextuality, Realizations, Editorials, Presidential Election, Content Analysis

Abstract

This study deals with the language maintenance of Balinese in Langkat. This objective of the study was to examine the factors affecting the Balinese language maintenance in Langkat. This study was descriptively qulitatively conducted. The subjects taken were 20  males and females of Balinese. The use of instruments in this study were interview to gain the factors of Balinese language maintainance in Langkat. The theories of Holmes was used in this study. The data were analyzed by using Spradley analysis (1979). There are seven factors affecting Balinese language maintenance in the first and the second generation of Balinese in Langkat found as the findings of the study such as; ethno linguistic vitality, using language in family domain, using language in neighborhood domain, using language in religion domain, using language in workplace domain, practice of traditional ceremony and an additional factor that found by researcher as a new insight in this research is interaction with older people. Analysis of data clearly indicates that Balinese language maintenance were done in Langkat.Keywords: language maintenance, factors affecting language maintenance, Balinese in Langkat

Abstract

This study focused on the investigation of implementing Scientific Approach in teaching online reading comprehension at MTsN 2 Medan. The research problem was based on the implementation of Scientific Approach as one of teaching strategies in the application of curriculum 2013 in selected school. Scientific Approach consists of several stages which somehow were not applied optimally in teaching and learning activity. The research was conducted by using qualitative descriptive design. The data were collected by observing and interviewing subjects of the study.The subjects were three teachers who used to teach reading comprehension at MTsN 2 Medan in grade eight in junior high school education level. The objectives of the research were to find out; 1) the implementation of scientific approach in online teaching reading, 2) how the strategies are realized to be implemented in online teaching reading, 3) the reason of the strategies of implementing scientific approach are realized in online teaching reading. Based on the analysis of the data. The findings of the research were: 1) teachers had applied the implementation even though it was not optimal, 2) the strategies used of the approach in order to encourage students during learning process, 3) teachers had reasons to implement scientific approach (observing, questioning, experimenting, associating, and communicating) as a teaching strategy. The result of the research would be a reference towards further study and help other teachers in applying teaching strategy of learning process

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to identify types of politeness strategies, to examine the differences of  politeness patterns used by different gender and to see how the politeness strategies imply in the culture of “indirectness” a culture of Javanese who avoid being direct to utter something which were reflected in Javanese indirect speech acts in request. The approach used in this study are based on politeness theory of Brown & Levinson (1987); Bald-on record, Positive, Negative, and Off Record. This study employed descriptive qualitative design. The data were the transcription of recorded observation and interview using audiovisual recorder in Javanese social interaction in doing business transaction  at “PasarRebo”, a traditional market in Deli Serdang, North Sumatera. The politeness strategies used were bald-on record strategy, positive politeness strategy and negative politeness strategy. Different strategies were performed by different gender; male dominantly used bald-on record strategy while female dominantly used positive politeness strategy. The realization of Javanese indirect speech acts used by female established an indirect correlation to politeness strategies and the culture of “indirectness” in Javanese. The realization of these politeness strategies by the speakers were aimed to minimize Face Threatening Acts to endeavor a harmony in social interaction. Abstract

This study deals with language maintenance by Javanese families. It employs qualitative research design with case study. This study aims to find out: (1) the dominant factor affect f Javanese families language maintenance in Desa Sambirejo Timur, (2) the strategies used by Javanese families to maintain their ethnic language, and (3) the reason Javanese families maintained their language. The subjects were ten Javanese families including parents (the third generation) and children in Desa Sambirejo Timur. The instruments used for this study were observation and interview (in-depth interview). The observation was applied to get the data about the factor affect Javanese families’ language maintenance. The interview was applied to find the dominant factor affect language maintenance by Javanese families. The data was analyzed by using interactive model from Miles and Huberman’s. There are five factors being analyzed, namely: (1) attitude towards Javanese language, (2)value, (3) identity, (4) demography, and social factor. The dominant factor affect Javanese lang8uage maintenance in this study is the attitude towards language. Besides that there is one additional factor found during research namely visiting homeland. The strategy used by parents to maintained Javanese language in their family are: (1) raising Javanese language interest for children by direct them to arts, culture and literature about Javanese such as wayang, Javanese radio broadcasting, and Javanese song and (2) mix Javanese language with Indonesian when speaking to the children. Key Words     : language maintenance, language attitude, family language maintenance, factors in language maintenance

Abstract

The aims of this study are to describe : 1) the types of translation procedures used in the translated text done by the students, 2 ) the types of cohesion shifts used in the translated text done by the students, 2) the types of coherence shifts used in the translated text done by the students. The data were taken from the translated text of students of English faculty at Alwasliyah University of North Sumatra. They were analyzed by using some steps. First, the researcher selected translated text which contain cohesion and coherence shifts. Second, the translated text were classified based on Blum – Kulka’s theory. Having analyzed the data from translated text of students which consists of six paragraphs, the findings are presented as follows : 1). There are five translation procedures which are applied by the students in translating text. They are modulation (29), reduction (8), deletion (2), naturalization (5) and reduction+modulation (2), 2). There are 39 cohesion shifts which are used by the students namely 37 cohesion shifts in text meaning and 2 cohesion shifts in level of explicitness, 3). there are 38 coherence shifts which were used by the students namely 32 reader-focused shifts of coherence and 6 text-focused shifts of coherence. Abstract

This study aimed (1) to describe the perception, attitude and motivation of Economics students in learning English. (2) to describe level of  perception, the level of attitude and level of motivation of Economics students in learning English.(3) to reason  why the Economics students realize such perception, attitude and motivation in learning English as the ways they are. This qualitative study was conducted at the first year of Economics students. The sources of data of this study were 58 students from two classes. The data were collected by share questionnaire and interviews then were analyzed using Interactive Models. The result showed that (1) the students perceive the important of English for his/her study and future work and students offer the general abstract statement of the important of English. They have positive attitude and negative attitudes and integrative instrumental, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation; (2) level of perception of Economics students were 485 highly positive, 33% positive and 19 % negative, then the level of attitude in the level of receiving (78%), valuing (64%), internalizing values (63%), responding (50%) and organizing (43%). The level of motivation was high. (3)some reason of students realized their perception were work, study, promote economy syariah language policy and lack of skill. For reason of students realized their attitudes were economical factor, ethnicity, language policy, occupation and listen the music, three reasons of students realized their motivation were the physical condition of class, lecturer and method of teaching.Keywords: English, Learning, Perception, Attitude, Motivation.
