The research dealt with Metaphor Sentences. The aims of this study were: (1) to find out the translation strategies of metaphors are used in The Magic of Thinking Big and (2) to describe the translation strategies maintain metaphors in The Magic of Thinking Big. The research was conducted by using qualitative design. The data of this study were sentences. The data were collected through documentary technique and the instrument was the documentary sheet. The technique of data analysis was descriptive. The finding of this study revealed that: (1) The metaphor in The magic of Thinking Big were translated by applying six translation strategies, namely: word for word Translation (5.3%) lieral translation (4.3%), faithful translation (57.5%), Free translation (3.2%), communicative translation (30.5%) and discursive creation was found (2.2%). (2) The metaphors are maintained that found in the Magic of Thinking Big are original metaphors turned into another original metaphors, stock metaphors turned into another stock metaphors, adapted metaphors turned into adapted metaphors, dead metaphors turned into dead metaphors, original metaphor turned into stock metaphor, stock metaphor turned into original metaphor, meanwhile, 10 original metaphors and 1 dead metaphor are no longer classified as metaphors. Language has special characteristic that is metaphor sentences, therefore in the case of translating of metaphor sentences in which their concept in unknown for readers, the translator often faces the problems to find out the translation strategies to translate metaphor in a source language (SL) and how the metaphor sentences are maintained in the target language (TL).Keywords : Metaphor, Translation Strategies, Maintain Metaphor

Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) was detected in China in December 2019, spread throughout the world within a few months and was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) on 11th March 2020. It also has hit Indonesia since March 2020. It affects 90.2% of students worldwide, in which 1.57 billion students are absent from school and 191 countries including Indonesia. Unfortunately, the observation found that the students often say impolite language, such as mock their friends, change their friends’ name, and have high intonation when they were uttering their opinion during online teaching and learning process through Zoom. It is very serious problem because impoliteness happened during the main activity. The objective of the study was to find out the realizations of impoliteness strategies used by students in English online learning through Zoom during pandemic Covid-19. The study was descriptive qualitative. The subject of the study was VII grade of SMP Ar-Rahman Percut. The data of the study was impoliteness clauses which are recorded from the students’ interaction. The finding of the study, there were eight realizations of impoliteness strategies found in this study, they are be disinterested, unconcerned, unsympathetic; use inappropriate identity marker; use obscure or secretive language; seek disagreement; use taboo words; call the other name; frighten; and condescend, scorn or ridicule. Then, there were three additional realizations, they are employing insincere; direct speech, clear, unambiguous; and invade the other’s space. This research dealt with conversational style of male and female teachers in senior high school. The objectives of this study were: to investigate features of conversational style used by male and female teachers in senior high school; and to elaborate the conversational style. It was conducted using qualitative research design. The data were obtained from 4 male and 4 female teachers. 20 conversations were recorded. The instruments of collecting data were observation, recording, and interviewing adopted by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). The data were classified to the criteria of conversational style determined by Swann (2000).The findings showed there were five features of conversational style used by male and female teachers. All features of conversational style were found in realization of male and female teachers.Keywords: Conversational style, Gender and Language, Teachers‟ language.

This study deals with politeness strategies in political language. The aim of the study is to describe how Indonesian politicians realize politeness in their language. The subject was taken nine parties who have representatives. They come from different parties: Democrat, Golkar, PDIP, PKS, PPP, PKB, PAN, Gerindra and Hanura. Data were classified and verified with reference to the criteria of politeness strategies as determined by Brown & Levinson (1987); cover the bald on record strategy, positive strategy, negative strategy and off-record strategy. The finding show that there were four types of politeness strategies used by Politicians in different of types of illocutionary acts; positive strategy, bald on record strategy, negative strategy, and off-record strategy. The most dominant type of politeness strategies used was positive strategy. The most dominant type was due to fact that speakers in interaction try to get closer the hearers. They use the group identity marker in addressing someone so there is no distance relationship between the speaker and hearer. They also gave the reasons when they speak in order to satisfy the hearer. Key words: politician; political language; politeness strategy

Language Shift in Tamil Ethnics in Lubuk Pakam Vijay - Khana; Berlin - Sibarani; Busmin - Gurning

This research focused on language shift in Tamil Ethnics in Lubuk Pakam. It is aimed at finding out the process of language shift and the reason of the language is shift. The data were taken from the Tamil families living in Lubuk Pakam. This study was based on qualitative research. The subjects of the study were 72 Tamil people in Lubuk Pakam. The subjects were divided into two groups, namely intra marriage and inter marriage of Tamil people in Lubuk Pakam. Questionnaires and interviews were used to gain the data. The data were analyzed by using data collection, data reduction, data display and data verification. The findings show that there are five domains, which influence the process of language shift into Bahasa Indonesia of second and third generation in intra marriages and intermarriages of Tamil ethnics, namely family, friends, education, religion and employment. The status of Bahasa Indonesia as the official language and social success are the reasons for first generation of intra marriages and inter marriages Tamil ethnics shift into Indonesian language mean while in third generation the status of Bahasa Indonesia, social success and language use since child as the reason of Tamil ethnics shift into Bahasa Indonesia.Keywords: Language Shift, Domains, Tamil, Ethnics

Indonesia was well known for the variety of tribes, traditional languages, society and culture. It triggered to conduct this research that concerned to social stratification and Karonese register in giving pedah pedah perjabun. The problem of this research was how far the Karonese register change in this modern era or whether there were any differences among society group in Karonese traditional wedding ceremony. Based on this problem, this research aimed to 1) investigate the types of social stratification in traditional wedding ceremony of Karonese, 2) describe the reflections of social stratification toward the Karonese register, and 3) explain Karonese register in traditional wedding ceremony. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data were taken from Karonese register in traditional wedding ceremony and the source of data was Karonese native speaker who involved in traditional wedding ceremony. This research showed that 1) the interaction of Karonese society in traditional wedding ceremony stratifies Karonese people into four divisions. They are kalimbubu and anak beru that categorized as closed social stratification and sembuyak and teman meriah that categorized as opened social stratification, 2) social stratification were reflected through the differences and similarity form of register .Kallimbubu and anakberu used formal register as the most dominant regiser while sembuyak and anak beru used consultative register as the most dominant, and 3) the cause of Karonese register in traditional wedding ceremony was caused by register with reference to field that covered factor of arena and register with reference to tenor that cover formality and status. The aims of this study were to find out the types of translation procedures in Patient Information Leaflets, to describe the realization of translation procedures and to explain about the reason of certain translation procedures realized in Patient Information Leaflets.The research was conducted by using qualitative descriptive design. The data of this study was translation unit that consists of words, phrases, clauses and sentences in Patient Information Leaflets in two versions, English as the source text and Bahasa Indonesia as the target text. The data was analyzed by using the theory of Translation Procedures based on (Vinay and Darbelnet, 2000) to find the types, realization and the reason of certain translation procedures were used in Patient Information Leaflets. The results of the study were; there were eight types of translation procedures in patient information leflets namely borrowing, calque, literal translation, transposition, modulation, equivalent, deletion and mixing procedures, there were some realization of translation procedures in patient information leaflets, and there were seven reasons behind the realization of translation procedures. ABSTRACTThe objectives of this study is to investigate the culture and interlanguage stages effect on EFL students’ politeness in refusals. This study was a qualitative research. The data were taken from refusal expressions made by EFL Malay and Batak Junior high school students with initial stage (stage 1 interlanguage) and free variation stage (stage 2 interlanguage). The data of this study were collected by using elicitation techniques by using Discourse Completion Task (DCT), pictures and Interview. The number of the subjects involved in this study was taken by using snowball technique and the total number were twelve subjects. The results of this study showed that both culture and interlanguage stages affect the EFL students’ politeness in refusals. In Bataknese EFL students, the realization of politeness in refusal tends to be more affected by the culture rather than the interlanguage stages. While in Malay, culture and interlanguage stages have the same effect in the realization of politeness in refusals.Keywords: Culture, Effect, Interlanguage Stages, Politeness, Refusals
