Abstract

The objective of this study were 1) to find out the kinds of request used by male and female students in doing interaction at informal context, 2) to elaborate the way request linguistically performed by male and female students in doing interaction at informal context, and 3) to provide the reasons why male and female students perform request in the way they are. It was applied by using descriptive qualitative research.  It was conducted at Dharmawangsa Senior High School in Medan involving 3 male and 3 female students. The data were collected through observing, recording and interviewing them. The data were 44 male students’ utterances and 42 female students’ utterances taken in three areas of school: canteen, in front of the class, and parking lot. The findings showed that 1) syntactical realization and lexical realization were found in students’ utterances with four kinds of syntactical realization: imperative, interrogative, declarative, and modal auxiliary; 2) the way of requests linguistically performed by male students was the direct way. Similarly, the way of requests linguistically performed by female students was the direct way. 3) There were two reasons why male and female students perform request namely interlocutors and age. Abstract

This study deals with the cognitive process by students’ majoring in natural and social science in Writing Analytical Exposition Text. This study attempted to investigate the reasons why the cognitive process happens in writing analytical exposition text the way it does. The data in this study were the students of SMA Nurul Iman from two different majors; they were three students of Natural Science Major and three students of Social Science Major. This study was conducted by using qualitative design of which instrument are both writing test and interview. The research findings show that the cognitive processes of the students of the two majors were different in planning, translating and reviewing. The students majoring in natural and social science write analytical exposition in similarity and different cognitive process. The similarity is that both students majoring write analytical text in terms three stages; planning, translating, and reviewing, and the different are that the two major student perform cognitive process in different stage. The students majoring in Natural Science use the information in the assignment to generate new information then relate it with their experience and they know about the topic to be developed. Whereas, students majoring in Social Science do not really know about the topic and do not relate it with their experience so that way they could not generate content information and develop the text. Keywords: Cognitive Process, Analytical, Different Major, Social Science, Natural Sciences

Abstract

The purposes of the study is to describe about the experiential realization through transitivity analysis in classroom discourse, and only concerns with  one  component  of  the  metafunctions   that is the experiential meaning. The problem investigated in this study are (1) The transitivity processes used by the teachers in English classroom context; (2) the description of processes realized by teachers in the classroom context; and (3) the field of discourse in which the processes are realized in the classroom context. This study is data -based with descriptive qualitative and quantitative in nature and the method is observational. The location of the sudy were in 2 schools,and the subjects of the study are 3 English teachers from both  schools in Aceh tamiang 2016. In collecting the data, this study is used a means of audio-visual  recording and transcriptions, and  analyzed by  employing  Interactive Model. The result of the study from  data analysis with total of  clauses produced by 3 teachers each two sessions are 2175 clauses. It gained 726 clauses of Material Process (33.38%), followed by behavioural process gained 425 clauses (19.54%), relational process gained 296 clauses (13.60%), existantial process gained 287 clauses (13.19%), mental process gained 250 clauses (11.49 %), and verbal process gained 191 clauses (8.78 %).Keywords: Classroom Discourse, Process of Transitivity,  Systemic Functional Linguistic

Abstract

In teaching, almost all schools use textbooks. In teaching, the schools give the textbooks to students as the medium of teaching. The textbooks do not only include lessons and practices, but they also include texts and even various text types. The text types are given to the students as medium of practicing the lessons that the students focusing. Halliday                    (1989:12) states context consists of three aspects, namely field, tenor and mode. The objective of this study is to reason for the various text types are realized in the textbooks of the first Grade of State Islamic School. Donal ( 2010: 29) states that qualitative research is a study that aims to understand a phenomenon that focuses on the total picture. Research design in this study was done by descriptive qualitative research. Data analysis in this research is there are 19 text types used in the textbooks of the first Grade of State Islamic School. The technique for collecting data is observation which observesthe reason for the use of the text types in the textbooks and then analyzed the reason for the use of the text types in the textbooks by using Miles, Huberman and Saldana model ( 2014: 31) with three steps of data analysis such as abbreviating data, presenting data and picturing and proving conclusion. The findings show that the reason for the use of the text types in the textbooks of the first Grade of State Islamic School is based on the three aspects of context, namely field, tenor and mode. Keywords: Texts, Text Types, Systemic Linguistic,Textbooks

Abstract

This study was aimed at examining the Silence of students in EFL Classroom. The objectives of this study were to find out the types and the reason of silence is used by students in Industry Engineering. This study was conducted by descriptive qualitative method. The source of data was recording and interview. The technique of data collection was recording and interview. The technique of data analysis was interactive model by Miles, Huberman and Saldana (2014). The findings of the study showed that: ATDS students in EFL classroom just uses 9 types out of 12 types of silence. They are: (1)The wise or virtuous silent, (2) The modest silent,(3)The cunning silent, (4)The eloquent silent, (5)The dumb founded silent, (6) The culpable silent, (7)The strong silent, (8)The weak silent, (9) The dead silent.Keywords: Silence, EFL Classroom

Abstract

The objectives of this experimental research were to find out whether: 1) students achievement in reading comprehension taught by using directed reading thinking activity (DRTA) strategy was higher than taught by using reciprocal teaching strategy. 2) Students’ achievement in reading comprehension with high prior knowledge was higher than that students with low prior knowledge, and 3) there was interaction between teaching strategies and prior knowledge on students’ achievement in reading comprehension. The population of this research was the students in grade VIII of SMP Dwi Tunggal T. Morawa in 2012/2013 school year. Prior knowledge test was conducted for classifying the students upon the high and low prior knowledge. Students’ achievement in reading comprehension was measured by using reading comprehension test. The data were analyzed by applying two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) at the level of significant . Scheffe –test result also showed that high prior knowledge students got higher achievement if they were taught by using directed reading thinking activity strategy while low prior knowledge students got higher achievement if they were taught by using reciprocal teaching strategy. Abstract

Semiotic is the study of sign or the science that study about the sign in human beings. The objectives of this study were to investigate the semiotic meanings applied in cigarette advertisement, to analyze how the meanings were coded verbally and non-verbally, and to reason why it is used in the ways they are. The data for the study were clauses, phrases, and sentences drawn from selected billboard advertisement of cigarette in Medan. The verbal data analyzed with linguistic devises and textual analysis of Leech Theory and visual grammar of Kress and Van Leeuwen as theoretical framework. The result were two broad categorize of meaning. They were related to verbal and non-verbal aspects. The relation between the verbal and non-verbal expression were elaborate, manipulate, and exageratte,  the advertisers make the major use of declarative sentence that are found on 11 texts. Then, by using 8 imperative and 8 adjective. Next, by using 6 disjunctive and 6 noun/pronoun. In image/picture use of visual features such as calor saturation, symbolic structure representation, offering gaze, the use of large size, logo, slogan. Various social context were discoverd in the advertisement such as promoting the standar of quality, quantity, creative, enjoying the life. The standard idea about how particular mode like young and old man should be differentiated based on the conventional values in society when it comes to what types of product that is competible to them. Cigarette advertisement also hide threats with persuasive expression and colorful meaning for commercial purposes.Keywords: Semiotics, Sign, Critical Discourse Analysis, Cigarette Advertisement.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to know the cognitive process manner of different gender in writing argumentative text. The population of this study was grade XII of Free Methodist Senior High School Medan in 2019/2020 academic years and the sample was three males and three females. The sample was taken by snowball technique. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research design of which data were the transcript of think aloud protocol and retrospective interview. In analyzing the data, this research used model of Miles and Huberman, namely data collection, data reduction, data display, and data verification. Based on the data analysis was found that male and female had difference manners in writing argumentative text. The male students generated the ideas by brainstorming, and then they outlined the thinking ideas orderly as a guide in writing. In the translating process, they tended to transform the ideas based on the generic structure of argumentative text referred to the outlines which were made before. In the process of writing they did reading and editing words and sentences have been arranged well. In the end of their writing, they tended to read their writing result to make sure. While the female students had different way with male students where in the planning process, they generated the ideas by brainstorming then, they developed the points by outlining the ideas and the ideas were improved the quality by reading and revising the ideas. In the translating process, they tended to develop their writing by structuring it based on the argumentative generic structure without reading and editing because they tended to write it fluently. In reviewing, they did reading the text to check all words and sentences. Abstract

The aims of this study were to find out the types of translation procedures in the translation of Quick Reference of Compaq Notebook PC from English into Indonesian, and to describe the ways of proceduer translated in contextual situation from English into Indonesian. The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data of this study were word,phrase,clouse and sentence that were translated from English into Indonesian on a book of “Quick Reference of Compaq Notebook PC as the source of data. Besides that, the data was analyzed by using translation procedure based on (Newmark,1988) which used to answer the questions number one and two to find the types and ways of translation procedure were used in Quick Reference of Compaq Notebook PC.The results of this study were found that there were eleven types of translation procedure used in translation of Quick Reference of Compaq Notebook PC namely transference, naturalization, culture equivalent, functional equivalent, synonymy, through translation, shift or transposition, modulation, recognised equivalent,componential analysis and reduction and expansion.The context of Translation procedure used in Quick Reference of Compaq Notebook PC were context situation based Halliday (1987) which used to answer the question number three.It consists of field,tenor and mode. Keywords: Quick Reference, Compaq Notebook PC, Translation Strategies
