Abstract

This community service activity aims to implement an Internet of Things (IoT)–based system integrated with an Android application to monitor ammonia gas levels in poultry farms. The activity took place at Ziven Chicken Farm in Stabat, North Sumatra, which faces challenges related to ammonia accumulation from livestock waste. The methodology follows four phases: (1) initiation, involving initial observation and interviews with farm’s owner and workers concerning problems identifications and needs; (2) planning, including the design of the IoT solution and mobile application; (3) implementation, consisting of assembling the IoT device using the MQ-137 and DHT-22 sensors, integrating them with the ESP32 microcontroller, and developing the application connected to a cloud server; and (4) monitoring and control, which includes system performance monitoring, data validation, and evaluation of system use by the partner. The system provides real-time visualization of ammonia, temperature, and humidity levels through tables and graphs. Results show an upward trend of ammonia concentration, reaching 21 ppm on the third day, with humidity positively affecting ammonia levels. A notable spike occurred between 20:00 and 21:00 WIB, indicating the need for improved ventilation and cleaning routines. Overall, the system assists farmers in determining optimal maintenance schedules and supports the adoption of digital technologies in poultry farm management.

Abstract

The socialization program for implementing fish apartments in Bancaran was developed to enhance food security and strengthen the capacity of local fishing communities. Degradation of coastal ecosystems, declining fish catches, and increasing exploitation have reduced fish availability, affecting income stability and lowering fish stocks. Fish apartments are introduced as a solution to increase habitat complexity, provide nursery and spawning areas, attract fish aggregations, and ultimately improve aquatic productivity. The program applied a community empowerment approach, beginning with the introduction of the fish apartment concept, followed by discussions on structural designs and agreement on suitable installation sites. Activities were conducted at the Bancaran Village Hall and involved 22 participants, 80% of whom were fishers, along with representatives from other coastal fisheries sectors. Additional participants included DP2KP, TNI, POLRI, and local traders. Visual presentations and interactive discussions were used as the primary methods. Program effectiveness was evaluated through pre- and post-tests to measure understanding and perceptions. Results showed a substantial increase in knowledge of fish apartment structures and benefits, rising from 18% to 100%. Perception also improved, with “strongly agree” responses increasing from 86.4% to 100%. These outcomes reflect strong community support and provide a solid foundation for implementing the technology to enhance fisheries productivity and strengthen sustainable food security in Bancaran’s coastal community.

Abstract

Solid waste management in Indonesia still faces a major service gap, as reflected by open dumping, open burning, and disposal into water bodies. In Lima Puluh Kota Regency, 81.57% of the 2024 waste generation was reported as unmanaged, while the Payakumbuh Regional Landfill became inoperable following an explosion and landslide in late 2023. This community service program aimed to strengthen the capacity of the PKH Kepompong Waste Bank in Jorong Sopan to manage household organic waste through Source-Based Waste Processing Technology (TOSS). The program employed a sequence of activities: awareness-raising on source segregation, introduction to the TOSS workflow, and hands-on training on producing eco-enzyme from fruit waste as a bio-activator, followed by composting practice using a 30×30×30 cm bamboo box. A total of 37 waste bank members participated, with an emphasis on practical skill development. The results indicate that participants improved their understanding of organic–inorganic segregation, were able to prepare eco-enzyme, and practiced composting so that decomposed material could be harvested as compost. Key enabling factors included the post-landfill disruption urgency, the waste bank’s institutional support, and simple locally available materials; constraints involved consistent segregation, moisture/aeration control, and the eco-enzyme fermentation period. Simple SOPs, community monitors, and basic indicator recording are recommended to sustain routine adoption. TOSS implementation has the potential to reduce open burning and river dumping, minimize odors and flies, and divert the dominant organic fraction into inputs for home gardening. Compost can be used for household gardens or marketed locally.
