Abstract

The curriculum reform encourages all schools in Indonesia to gradually adapt and try to use Kurikulum Merdeka although many of them are still implementing the 2013 curriculum. This study aims at investigating the secondary school English teachers’ viewpoints toward Kurikulum Merdeka. Through a qualitative approach, this study brings up the urgency of the teacher's voice as the ones implementing the curriculum in the practical field. Drawing upon data collected by means of questionnaires and interviews, this study reveals a multi-dimensional structure of teachers’ viewpoints. There are 13 teachers being involved in this study from 13 different secondary schools. They were purposively chosen as they are partner schools of English Language Education Department UIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya having adequate assets for implementing Kurikulum Merdeka-based learning. There are several main themed viewpoints found through this study which deals with the understanding of the curriculum, the implementation and the barriers encountered and the current needs. First, teachers mostly know the terms related to Kurikulum Merdeka but they do not exactly know the meaning. Another viewpoint is that the teachers whose school have tried to implement Kurikulum Merdeka partly, have issues in designing the Teaching Module and formulating the elements within the Teaching Module. Some of them have actualized the Teaching Module into real practice and issues dealing with it emerged as they implement it. The study leads to the urgency of training on designing and implementing Kurikulum Merdeka for the teachers, especially those from private schools.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the challenges encountered by English for Specific Purposes (ESP) learners in their journey to enhance English language proficiency. A mixed-methods approach was adopted, incorporating a comprehensive literature review and conducting semi-structured interviews with three ESP teachers and three administrative staff members from the same educational institutions. The findings from the literature review revealed that ESP learners often struggle with managing their time effectively due to the demands of their personal commitments, learners' self-efficacy in facing confidence issues, fear of making mistakes, and negative past experiences hindering their language learning progress. Moreover, limited access to authentic materials tailored to their specific fields emerged as a crucial obstacle, impacting learners' ability to develop subject-specific vocabulary and comprehend real-world language use. By recognizing and addressing these challenges, educators and institutions can develop more targeted and effective language learning strategies, ultimately empowering ESP learners to overcome their obstacles and achieve higher levels of English proficiency

Abstract

The current research is a critical study of Bradbury's "Fahrenheit 451" and has attempted to explain how epistemology has been made conflicting and controversial, leading to the idea of implementation of universal anthropological knowledge. It is the knowledge about human races and their collective interests and benefits. Advancing anthropological knowledge is a need of the day because a majority of the world's problems are due to books. The researcher explained that universal human knowledge will build trust, tolerance, and acceptance on the part of individuals and scholars from every culture and society around the globe. The perspective of "Ethnoepistemology" has been used as a theoretical framework in guiding and providing context to the study. "Ethnoepistemology" also decentralized the concept of one dominant center in the field of knowledge i.e. “The West knowledge”. Having a qualitative and epistemological nature, the research used "Close Reading" as a method of data analysis to highlight the hidden meanings and concepts. The study concluded that the implementing and considering anthropological knowledge as universal will regain the declined scope of academia as it is universal.

Abstract

The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) provides a basis for developing language education curriculum, conducting language learning and teaching, and administering language assessment. In the Indonesian context, the recently launched Kurikulum Merdeka refers to the CEFR in targeting the English Proficiency levels that should be achieved in English Subject across different schooling levels. Hence, teachers’ understanding and perceptions of the framework become important. This study aimed to examine the pre-service EFL teachers’ perception of the CEFR. A survey using a 5-point Likert Scale questionnaire and semi structured interviews were conducted to collect both quantitative and qualitative data from 49 pre-service EFL teachers who were selected through a random sampling technique. The results showed that the participants had positive perceptions of the CEFR but they had limited to a moderate understanding level of the CEFR. They only received limited CEFR exposure from a course in their teacher training program. They also mostly associated the CEFR with standardized testing and language certification without understanding the underlying principles of the framework. More comprehensive CEFR training for teacher candidates should be considered before Kurikulum Merdeka is compulsorily implemented. Also, the research can play a crucial role in shaping language education by influencing curriculum development, teacher training, policy decisions, quality assurance measures, student outcomes, and ongoing professional development within the field.

Abstract

Media as an important part of English teaching has been developed massively. The role of media in teaching English cannot be separated from students and teachers. This study aims to measure the effect of media that has been developed by the writer in order to know the effectiveness of the media itself in improving students’ vocabulary. OCEAN is a media development that provide some features to improve students’ English skill. This study implemented and tested OCEAN to measure the effectiveness of the media. This study used experimental quantitative research and T-test to gain and analyze the data. The result said that the average value of English vocabulary from pre-test is 65.81 ± 5.19, which is lower than the average value of English vocabulary in the post-test, which is 82.12 ± 5.86. To find out whether there is a significant increase in the average variable value of English vocabulary from the pre to post, the Wilcoxon test was carried out. From the Wilcoxon test, it was found that the calculated Z value was smaller than the -Z table (-4,594 < -1,960), and the p-value was smaller than α (0,000 < 0,050), so the decision was taken that H0 was rejected, which means that there is a significant difference in the average between pre and post-test. The conclusion of this study showed that the media is effective in teaching English vocabulary.

Abstract

Although extensive research has been carried out on learners’ demotivation, there is limited research exploring the demotivating factors of teachers, especially in Indonesia. Heavy workloads and challenging classroom environments can lead to decreased teacher motivation, which can affect students’ academic achievement. Therefore, it is pivotal for teachers to regulate their motivation and mitigate potential shortcomings. To address this gap, this case study is conducted to describe factors contributing to teachers’ demotivation and the strategies teachers employ to maintain their motivation. Semi-structured interviews were used to gather data from two EFL teachers voluntarily involved in this study. Using thematic analysis, this study elucidated that EFL teachers employ several motivational strategies such as spiritual and social strategies, engaging in pleasure activities, participating in professional development, and seeking help from peers to tackle demotivational conditions in their schools. Discussion, limitations, and significance of this study will be further discussed.
