Abstract

The Family Planning (KB) Program is one of the government's strategies in controlling the population growth rate and realising quality families. Couples of childbearing age (PUS) are the main target in this program, but many PUS still have not yet become active family planning acceptors, especially in rural and remote areas. This community service activity aims to increase the understanding and participation of PUS in the use of contraceptives through education and counseling. The implementation method involved lectures, discussions, demonstration of contraceptives, and using leaflet media and teaching aids to 20 participants in the work area of the Pattingalloang Health Center, Makassar. The activity results showed an increase in the enthusiasm and knowledge of participants regarding the importance of being an active family planning acceptor. Supporting factors for the activity's success include the support of health workers, cadres, and the availability of infrastructure, while time constraints and the number of participants are obstacles. It is hoped that this activity can strengthen the role of PUS in the success of the family planning program and create healthy, prosperous, and quality families

Abstract

Nutritional problems in toddlers, including stunting, wasting, and overweight, remain a major global health concern. Stunting is closely linked to specific deficiencies in vitamins and minerals, influenced by factors such as maternal education, family income, maternal knowledge of nutrition, breastfeeding practices, complementary feeding age, micronutrient adequacy, infection history, and genetics. This community service program aimed to increase maternal knowledge of balanced nutrition to prevent stunting in toddlers. The activity was conducted on January 20, 2025, at the Posyandu in the Pattingalloang Community Health Center working area, involving 20 participants, supported by lecturers, students, midwives, and local health cadres. Educational interventions were delivered through lectures, discussions, and Q&A sessions. Pre-test results showed that 65% of participants had good knowledge and 35% had poor knowledge regarding balanced nutrition and stunting prevention. Post-test results indicated an improvement, with 80% demonstrating good knowledge and only 20% remaining in the poor category. The findings highlight that targeted nutrition education can significantly improve maternal understanding and awareness, which may contribute to reducing stunting prevalence. Follow-up programs and home-based health services were also recommended to sustain knowledge and improve child health outcomes.

Abstract

Anemia remains a significant public health concern among pregnant women, with increased risks of complications during pregnancy, low birth weight, and maternal mortality. Pregnant women require twice as much iron as non-pregnant women, making adequate iron intake essential. Moringa (Moringa oleifera) leaves, rich in iron and essential nutrients, can potentially improve haemoglobin (Hb) levels. This community service program aimed to provide education on the benefits of moringa leaves and to demonstrate the preparation of nutrient-rich moringa pudding as a healthy, locally sourced alternative to prevent anaemia in pregnant women. The activity was conducted at Pattingaloang Public Health Center, involving 13 pregnant women. The implementation included lectures, leaflets, discussions, and demonstrations of moringa pudding preparation. Pre- and post-tests were used to measure participants’ knowledge. Results showed an increase in the proportion of participants with good knowledge from 77% before the intervention to 100% afterward. The active participation and enthusiasm of the attendees indicated high acceptance of the intervention. This initiative successfully improved knowledge and skills in utilizing moringa leaves for nutritional enhancement during pregnancy. It also encouraged community empowerment by promoting local food processing innovations. Sustained implementation of such programs has the potential to reduce anemia prevalence and improve maternal health outcomes.

Abstract

Stunting remains a significant public health challenge in Makassar City, with prevalence rates exceeding national targets and World Health Organization thresholds. Contributing factors include socioeconomic disparities, limited access to healthcare, suboptimal parenting practices, and inadequate nutritional intake. The OPTIMALCARE program introduces a community-based homecare policy innovation to accelerate stunting reduction through integrated health services, family-centered nutrition education, routine growth monitoring, and a mobile nutrition monitoring application. This program engages health workers, Posyandu cadres, and community leaders to deliver proactive home visits, promote behavioral change, and ensure timely interventions. A participatory approach strengthens local capacity, fosters cross-sector collaboration, and leverages technology for real-time data collection and analysis. The initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 2, SDG 3, and SDG 17), regional development priorities, and national research agendas on child health and nutrition. Through targeted outreach, community empowerment, and evidence-based interventions, OPTIMALCARE aims to improve healthcare accessibility, enhance parental knowledge, and foster sustainable community involvement, ultimately contributing to a significant decline in stunting prevalence in Makassar City.

Abstract

Stunting is a growth and developmental disorder in children caused primarily by chronic malnutrition and inadequate access to essential nutrients during critical early childhood. Mothers with adequate nutritional knowledge tend to prioritise their children’s dietary needs, enabling optimal growth and development. Preventing stunting is vital due to its long-term impacts on physical, cognitive, and economic potential. This community service activity aimed to enhance mothers' and families' knowledge, awareness, and skills in stunting prevention from an early stage. The program involved 20 women of reproductive age in the working area of Pattingalloang Health Center, Makassar. Activities included health education through socialization, discussions, and distribution of leaflets covering definitions, causes, prevention, and management of stunting. Interactive counseling sessions emphasized the importance of the First 1,000 Days of Life, balanced nutrition, exclusive breastfeeding, and appropriate complementary feeding practices. The high participation and engagement rates reflected increased enthusiasm and awareness regarding stunting, an issue often underestimated in the community. Key supporting factors included active participation, health worker collaboration, and adequate facilities, while limiting factors involved time constraints and fewer participants than targeted. The program significantly improved mothers’ understanding of their crucial role in stunting prevention and demonstrated that community-based, participatory interventions effectively support national stunting reduction goals.

Abstract

Anemia prevalence among adolescent girls is significantly higher compared to boys, primarily due to menstruation and increased iron requirements during growth. This condition negatively affects immunity, concentration, academic performance, physical fitness, and productivity, and poses long-term health risks, particularly during future pregnancies. In Bone Regency, adolescent anemia rates remain high despite the government’s iron supplementation program. This community service program aimed to implement research findings on using dates (Phoenix dactylifera) to increase hemoglobin levels and address anemia among adolescent girls. The activity involved health education on anemia prevention and the daily provision of 100 grams of dates (7–8 pieces) for seven consecutive days during menstruation. The program was conducted through observation, counseling sessions, and hemoglobin monitoring before and after the intervention. The rationale for using dates is based on their high iron and nutrient content, which supports hemoglobin synthesis naturally. The targeted participants were adolescent girls from the community surrounding Lapatau Stadium, Bone Regency. Expected outcomes included increased knowledge regarding anemia prevention, improvement in hemoglobin levels, and the promotion of alternative nutritional interventions for anemia management. Monitoring and evaluation were conducted by measuring hemoglobin levels post-intervention to assess effectiveness. The program also aims to disseminate results through a SINTA 5-indexed journal publication, providing evidence-based recommendations for integrating date consumption into adolescent nutrition programs. This initiative highlights the potential of locally acceptable, culturally relevant food-based strategies to complement existing public health interventions in reducing anemia prevalence among teenage girls.

Abstract

Stunting, a condition of impaired growth and development among children under five caused by chronic malnutrition in the first 1,000 days of life, remains a significant public health issue in Indonesia. Early prevention efforts are essential, particularly among women of reproductive age and prospective brides and grooms, who are critical in ensuring optimal maternal and child health. This community service program was conducted at Puskesmas Sekaran, Semarang, to empower prospective couples through balanced nutrition education to reduce the risk of stunting. The program adopted a participatory approach involving health workers, village authorities, and the Office of Religious Affairs. Activities included baseline assessments of chronic energy deficiency (CED) and anemia, development of educational media (booklets, leaflets, and banners), pre-marital nutrition classes, and intensive student mentoring. The intervention reached 25 participants across five villages, with activities delivered interactively through presentations, discussions, and Q&A sessions addressing scientific facts and common myths about nutrition. Pre- and post-tests were used to evaluate changes in knowledge, showing significant improvements: average pre-test scores increased from 89/100 to 95/100, with 92% of participants demonstrating improved knowledge and 76% achieving perfect post-test scores. These findings highlight that nutrition education, supported by user-friendly media, effectively enhances knowledge and awareness regarding balanced nutrition among prospective brides and grooms. The program demonstrates that empowering couples before marriage contributes to healthier pregnancy preparation, reduces risks of CED and anemia, and ultimately supports the national goal of lowering stunting prevalence.

Abstract

Amidst the onslaught of modernization, traditional handicrafts still hold a unique appeal. One such craft is blacksmithing. Blacksmiths, despite their high level of skill in producing handicrafts, often face serious health and safety risks due to exposure to burning, heavy equipment use, and direct contact with hazardous materials. Observations at the partner site revealed workplace accidents such as burns (35.8%), contact with hot iron (58.7%), and being struck by iron materials (35%) due to the nature of their work. Based on these issues, community service activities were conducted in the form of education on the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as an effort to limit disabilities among iron craftsmen. The results of the education on the benefits of PPE showed an increase in knowledge, attitude, and behavior, with pre-test results of 65%, 77%, and 85%, respectively, and post-test results of 83%, 89%, and 91%, respectively. In the results of the education on the benefits of fire extinguishers, there was an increase in knowledge, attitude, and behavior, with pre-test results of 75%, 80%, and 85%, respectively, and post-test results of 88%, 83%, and 90%, respectively. It can be concluded that the effectiveness of this community service program was successful

Abstract

Water is the fundamental basis for all biological and human activities. Water is believed to be a natural resource that will never run out and will always be available at all times. Nonetheless, the availability of water as a natural resource is restrained due to its relatively constant hydrological cycle; thus making it limited in supply. The methods used during the activity were lectures and discussions. At the beginning of the activity, the team conducted counseling related to well water sanitation and its impact and how to overcome it. The method of this counseling stage is carried out through 5 stages, namely: socialization stage, implementation stage. This activity includes 3 sessions, among others: First stage: Pre test, which is given through a questionnaire, through lecture, question and answer, and discussion methods Post test and assessing the results of the post test, technology application stage, monitoring and evaluation stage, program sustainability stage. The results of the service activities showed that the educational program on access to clean water sanitation and the effects of borehole water for health succeeded in significantly increasing the knowledge of the participants. The average score increased from 19.22 in the pre-test to 21.18 in the post-test, with a p-value of 0.001 which shows a significant difference. This result confirms the effectiveness of the clean water sanitation education program.
