Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out 1) the types of use of translanguaging and indexicality on students’ performance in the Seminar on ELT course and 2) the impact of the use of translanguaging in teaching Seminar on ELT courses in honing student performance. This study observed using an anthropolinguistic approach using analytical parameters, namely interconnection, valuability, and sustainability. A qualitative paradigm with an ethnographic model used in this study by applying twelve steps both in interview and observation methods. Translanguaging is a phenomenon of language use in which people use two or more languages simultaneously. This translanguaging often occurs in teaching when lecturers teach in class or when students present their journals or papers in front of participants in the class. This translanguaging carried out by students requires a language performance style carried out by students in front of all participants present to show their ability and expertise in expressing ideas orally. Translanguaging and indexicality use in students’ performance when presenting their journals or papers. Indexicality or Index can be in lingual form or Non lingual form. A speaker can index changes in relevant aspects of his/her identity in a conversational context. Translanguaging requires innovative language creativity in conveying thinking ideas. The use and application of this trans language can be seen from the performance style of students in front of the class when presenting their papers or journals.

Abstract

Reading comprehension remains a persistent challenge for Indonesian high school students, as evidenced by the country's below-average performance in international assessments like PISA. This issue is particularly evident in understanding news item texts, which require critical thinking and text-structure awareness. The present study investigates the effectiveness of the SQ3R technique—Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review—in improving students' comprehension of news item texts. Using a pre-test and post-test design with 34 Grade XI students, the results revealed a significant improvement in comprehension, with mean scores increasing from 61.47 to 81.91. The t-test analysis indicated a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05), confirming the effectiveness of the technique. The findings underscore the potential of SQ3R in enhancing comprehension through structured, sequential reading stages. Recommendations include integrating SQ3R into reading curricula and providing additional support for students struggling with text structure and vocabulary.

Abstract

This research analyzes the phenomenon of linguistic neocolonialism in the Indonesian creative industry with a case study of the film OOTD: Outfit of The Designer and its implications for English language learning. The study illuminates how the employment of English in film functions not solely as a medium of communication but also as a symbol of modernity, social status, and access to the global market. This study identifies that phenomena such as code-switching, code-mixing, and the predominance of English technical terms are indicative of power dynamics within the creative industry, thereby influencing individuals' language attitudes. Within the domain of English language acquisition, the study suggests that instrumental motivation plays a pivotal role in enhancing Willingness to Communicate (WTC) among learners. However, the study also notes that the preeminence of English can, in fact, give rise to language anxiety, particularly among students who feel less adept in their English usage. With these concerns, this study proposes the integration of translanguaging strategies and multilingual approaches within English language instruction. These methodologies are designed to foster a more inclusive and contextualized learning environment, thereby addressing the challenges posed by the dominance of English and promoting a more equitable and inclusive educational environment. By elucidating the nexus between globalization, language identity, and learning, this research offers insights into the optimal teaching of English in a balanced manner that does not disregard local language diversity.

Abstract

The world economic trends along with expanding markets have driven up the need for English language proficiency among fashion design students at Indonesian vocational high schools. This study performed a needs analysis to identify the English learning needs focusing in reading and viewing skills for tenth-grade students majoring in fashion design. Student questionnaires combined with an English teaching interview were used to collect data using descriptive research methodology. Sixteen students and one English teacher are the participants in this study. Questionnaire responses show that most of the students want careers in fashion design and merchandising, thus they need industry terminology and professional documentation skills and business communication skills. The students demonstrate primarily beginner-level English skills that they struggle to understand fashion-related vocabulary, professional communication, and official fashion documents like tech-packs. The research findings demonstrate why educational content must blend workplace-relevant material while matching industry requirements. To increase students' engagement and comprehension an English teacher needs to integrate multimedia resources together with visual-based instruction and authentic materials. The research helps develop English for Specific Purposes (ESP) learning materials that target vocational education to enable students to develop necessary skills for their future professions.
