Abstract

This study aims to explore the meaning of the term ghuluw in the Qur'an and its relevance in social contexts. This qualitative research employs library research with descriptive analysis based on Toshihiko Izutsu's semantic approach. The findings indicate that ghuluw carries fundamental meanings such as rising, increasing, exaggerating, and exceeding limits, and it refers to the behavior of the People of the Book who exhibit extremism in their religious practices. Its synonyms include ighraq, tasyaddud, and ifrat, while its antonyms are i'tidal and istiwa. In the pre-Qur'anic era, ghuluw lacked religious connotations and was used solely in literary contexts, such as poetry. In the Qur'an, the term appears twice, revealed in Madinah, and addressed to the People of the Book. Exegetes unanimously interpret it as excessive or transgressive behavior in religion. Tafsir Al-Munir notes that the behavior of ghuluw had existed since the era of Jahiliyyah Arabs, who claimed to adhere to the monotheistic teachings of their ancestor, Prophet Ibrahim A.S. In the modern context, ghuluw is relevant to three major social issues: excessive practices in worship by considering non-religious obligations as mandatory, blind glorification of figures or leaders, and excessive veneration of certain groups, leading to irrational sacrifices.

Abstract

This research project aims to analyze the concept of tasawwuf, as presented in the Dewa Ruci puppet story, as a representation of the spiritual journey towards insan kamil (perfect human being). This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical methodology. This research focuses on the concept of Sufism as its formal object, while the material object is the story of Wayang Dewa Ruci, particularly Bima's journey to achieve spiritual enlightenment. This research examines the interconnection between the tenets of Sufism and the narrative structure of wayang stories within the context of Javanese spiritual beliefs. The results demonstrate that the Dewa Ruci narrative reflects the stages of Sufism, namely takhalli (self-purification), tahalli (cultivation of good qualities), and tajalli (inner enlightenment). These stages are also related to the concept of manunggaling kawula Gusti (unity of servant with God) in Javanese mysticism. This study concludes that Wayang Dewa Ruci not only conveys moral and cultural messages, but also contains Sufism teachings that are relevant in the context of kejawen spirituality. It is recommended that further study of Sufism in local culture be undertaken, and that educational and cultural institutions integrate spiritual values in education and artistic preservation.

Abstract

Humanism as a theory of personality formation, places humans as the most perfect creatures created by God with noble potential to establish harmonious social relationships. However, human rights violations, such as human trafficking, remain a major challenge in Indonesia. So, the author tries to conduct a direct dialectic with the Qur'an to get an interpretation of the verses of slavery in the context of human trafficking and formulate steps to prevent it in Indonesia. This research uses a qualitative method with the analytical knife of Hans Georg-Gadamer's fusion of horizon theory. The results showed that QS. Yusuf: 19-20, QS. an-Nur: 33, and QS. ash-Shura: 42 after being analyzed using Gadamer's hermeneutics shows that slavery and human trafficking have occurred since ancient times. However, in today's horizon, Islam not only emphasizes the liberation of slaves, but also prohibits human exploitation in all its forms. Therefore, the solutions offered include moral education, economic empowerment, law enforcement, and rehabilitation for victims as concrete steps in combating human trafficking.

Abstract

Islam entered Indonesia when the people already had various traditions and cultures influenced by Hindu-Buddhist religions. One of these traditions is 'manganan', which is an almsgiving of the earth done by gathering and eating together. This research aims to explain the manganan tradition in Kapu Village, Merakurak Subdistrict, Tuban Regency through a living hadith approach. The method used is qualitative with field studies through interviews. This research uses the living hadith approach by integrating phenomenological theory to analyze the data. The results showed that there was an acculturation process from Hindu-Buddhist belief in the sacredness of the place, to an almsgiving event based on the teachings of the Prophet (PBUH), which is believed to bring good rewards in the future. This activity is also accompanied by Islamic activities such as khataman al-Qur'an, friendship and prayer together. This research concludes that the manganan tradition reflects the integration of Islamic values into local culture. The recommendation of this research is the need to preserve the manganan tradition while maintaining Islamic values so that it can become a forum for strengthening the cultural and spiritual identity of the community.

Abstract

This research is necessary to provide insight to the community in practicing amar ma’ruf nahi munkar as a foundation for addressing immoral actions in the context of religious freedom, based on QS. at-Taubah: 71. The aim of this study is to discuss amar ma’ruf nahi munkar as a basis for addressing immoral actions in the context of religious freedom, based on QS. at-Taubah: 71. The research method used is qualitative, with a literature study approach. Data sources were obtained through scholarly literature, including primary data (the Qur’an) and secondary data (books, journals, or similar materials related to the theme). The results and discussion conclude that addressing immoral actions can be done in three ways: preventing them with the hand, preventing them with the tongue, and lastly, preventing them with the heart. The weakest form of faith is rejecting immoral and disgraceful actions with the heart. This study recommends that the community address immoral actions in the context of religious freedom, based on QS. at-Taubah: 71. It also serves as a lesson for the community to reject disgraceful actions and provide guidance for those who practice what is good.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and compare the concept of freedom in the thoughts of John Stuart Mill and Muhammad Abduh as representations of Western and Islamic philosophical traditions. The background of this research lies in the complexity of interpreting freedom within different civilizational contexts, which has implications for both theoretical and practical dimensions of life. The study employs a qualitative method with a philosophical comparative approach based on library research. Primary data were obtained from the works of Mill and Abduh, supported by secondary sources such as books and scholarly articles. The findings reveal that Mill defines freedom as an individual right limited by the harm principle, aiming to create the greatest happiness for society. In contrast, Abduh places freedom within the Islamic theological framework, viewing it as a divine gift bound by moral and sharia principles. Despite fundamental differences in the sources and limitations of freedom, both thinkers agree that freedom of thought is a crucial instrument for civilizational progress. The conclusion of this study emphasizes the philosophical differences between Mill and Abduh, reflecting their respective epistemological contexts, while also highlighting opportunities for cross tradition dialogue. Recommendations from this research include developing educational policies that integrate the values of freedom and social responsibility to build a harmonious and progressive society.
