Abstract

Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects not only patients’ physical conditions but also their psychological and spiritual well-being. Many patients experience anxiety, emotional instability, uncertainty, and a need to reinterpret illness within a meaningful framework. In the Islamic context, Qur’anic reflection may provide a source of spiritual reassurance and meaning-making for Muslim patients facing chronic illness. However, limited studies have examined how Qur’anic reflective practices are experienced by patients with SLE in their everyday efforts to attain inner peace. This study aims to explore the psychospiritual meanings constructed by Muslim women with SLE through their engagement with The Living Qur’an Jar as a medium of Qur’anic reflection. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, this research involved five Muslim women diagnosed with SLE in Jember, East Java. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and field notes after participants engaged with The Living Qur’an Jar for seven days. The data were analysed using phenomenological thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns of meaning in participants’ lived experiences. The findings show that participants interpreted Qur’anic reflection as a way to feel spiritually accompanied by Allah, regulate emotional distress, reinterpret illness through patience and trust in God, and transform reflective awareness into simple daily actions. Rather than functioning as a clinical therapy, The Living Qur’an Jar was experienced as a Qur’anic psychospiritual practice that supported participants in constructing meaning, emotional calm, and spiritual reassurance. This study contributes to discussions on the lived experience of Muslim patients with chronic illness by highlighting Qur’anic mindfulness as a reflective process of psychospiritual meaning-making.

Abstract

Adolescents are in a developmental phase that is vulnerable to academic, social, emotional, and spiritual pressures. In dealing with these pressures, religious coping can serve as an adaptive strategy that helps students find meaning, gain calmness, and build spiritual support. This study aims to describe the level of religious coping among students of SMPN 1 Bontonompo Selatan based on age, gender, grade level, and participation in religious organizations. This research employed a quantitative approach with a descriptive design. The sample consisted of 90 students aged 12–15 years selected using purposive sampling. The instrument used was a religious coping scale adapted from Savira et al. and based on Pargament’s theory of religious coping. The data were analyzed descriptively using JASP. The results showed that students’ religious coping was generally in the moderate category, with a percentage of 63.3%. Based on students’ characteristics, religious coping showed variations, although most students remained in the moderate category. Students who participated in religious organizations had a higher proportion in the high category than those who did not. In addition, positive religious coping had a higher mean score than negative religious coping. These findings indicate that students have begun to use religious values as a strategy for dealing with pressure, but they still need reinforcement through guidance and counseling services based on religious values.

Abstract

The Lelang Lebak Lebung (inland water auction) tradition is a local wisdom that functions not only as an inland fisheries management system but also institutionalizes a harmonious relationship between humans, nature, and spirituality. This study aims to analyze the social practices of the Lelang Lebak Lebung tradition in Baturaja Village and to identify the Islamic ecotheological values embedded within it. Employing a descriptive-analytical qualitative approach, data were gathered through interviews, observation, and documentation involving customary leaders, religious figures, pengemin (auction winners), and the general public. Data analysis was conducted in two stages: a sociological approach to deconstruct the dimensions of the tradition's social practices, followed by an analysis of Fazlun M. Khalid’s Islamic Ecotheology, further reinforced by Travis Hirschi’s Social Control Theory. The findings reveal that this tradition operates circularly through four main dimensions: a consensus-based auction system, multi-sectoral oversight, environmental conservation through the protection of the swamp's biological cycle, and communal harvesting (bekarang). Theologically, these practices reflect the pillars of Tawhid (nature as a sacred trust), Khalifah (institutionalization of management responsibility), Mizan (synchronization of economy with the hydrological cycle), and Anti-Fasad (enforcement of sanctions against destructive fishing gear). Furthermore, community adherence to customary rules and conservation practices is reinforced by social control mechanisms involving attachment, commitment, involvement, and belief.  This study concludes that the Lelang Lebak Lebung tradition has successfully endured as a stronghold for aquatic ecosystem defense because it is sustained by an Islamic spiritual anchor that integrates religious rituals into the local economic system.
