Abstract

Introduction: Butterfly pea flowers (Clitoria ternatea L.) currently popular in society as high-antioxidant supplement. One of the organs affected by aging is the brain. D-galactose is a compound that is widely used for induction of aging in animal studies. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of butterfly pea flower tea on changes in brain weight in mice induced by D-galactose. Method: 24 rats were divided into four groups consisting of control, groups with 1%, 5%, and 10% butterfly pea flower tea intervention after being induced by aging for 6 weeks. The brain organs were then weighed to assess changes in each group. Result: There was an increase in body weight but no significant differences between each group either before or after the intervention. No significant differences were found in the average brain weight of each group, with the brain weight of the P3 group being lower than that of the other intervention groups. There is a positive correlation between body weight and brain weight. Conclusion: Although the butterfly pea flower has no statistically significant effect, at concentrations of 1% and 10% it can have an effect on brain weight after induction of aging by D-galactose.

Abstract

Background: To assess the effects of combining Tramadol and Dexamethasone with Bupivacaine in supraclavicular brachial plexus block for upper limb surgeries. Material and Methods: A clinical research was performed with sixty patients who received upper limb surgery with a supraclavicular brachial plexus block. The study encompassed a total of 60 patients who were divided into two groups, with 30 patients in each group. Group D was administered a blend of Bupivacaine and Dexamethasone, whilst Group T was given a mixture of Bupivacaine and Tramadol, resulting in a combined amount of 25 ml. The study recorded the beginning and length of the sensory and motor block. We meticulously observed the hemodynamic variables throughout the research, until the administration of the first rescue analgesic. Results: In group D, the mean time for motor block to occur was 5.10±0.92 minutes, whereas in group T, it took 7.93±0.98 minutes. Group D had an average sensory block onset time of 8.23±1.22 minutes, whereas Group T had a slightly longer average onset time of 10.97±1.22 minutes. Group D had an average motor block duration of 560.53±24.46 minutes, whereas group T had a duration of 358.93±20.85 minutes. Group D had a mean duration of sensory block of 745.17±32.81 minutes, whereas group T had a slightly shorter duration of 457.07±16.36 minutes. In group D, the average time for the first rescue analgesia was 961.50±32.94 minutes, whereas in group T, it was 524.17±16.46 minutes. Conclusion: Inclusion of Dexamethasone led to a noticeably quicker onset of motor and sensory block in comparison to Tramadol. In a recent study, researchers discovered that when Dexamethasone was added to the mix, it had a notable impact on the duration of both motor and sensory block. The effects were significant and promising. When Dexamethasone was added, it noticeably increased the duration until the first rescue analgesia, in comparison to Tramadol.

Abstract

This systematic review aims to assess the effectiveness of Kinesio Taping (KT) in alleviating pain in patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP). Chronic low back pain, a widespread and debilitating condition, necessitates the exploration of effective, non-pharmacological interventions to improve patient quality of life. This review examined studies from 2014 to 2024, sourced from Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, and Google Scholar, focusing on randomized controlled trials that utilized KT as a primary or adjunctive therapy. The findings indicate that when combined with conventional therapies, KT often leads to notable pain reduction and functional improvement in CLBP patients. However, inconsistencies across studies reveal varied outcomes, particularly concerning KT's benefits over placebo or sham taping. Factors such as application technique, duration, and patient-specific characteristics influence KT's efficacy, emphasizing the need for standardized methodologies in future research. While KT shows promise as part of a comprehensive treatment approach, further investigation with larger sample sizes and long-term follow-up is warranted to establish definitive application guidelines and confirm its role in managing CLBP.

Abstract

Sleep plays a crucial role in human growth, particularly during slow-wave sleep when the growth hormone functions optimally. Sleep disturbances are prevalent in 20–30% of children. Over the past century, there has been a notable decline in children’s sleep duration, with the most significant reductions observed in school-aged children. This study investigates the relationship between sleep patterns and the height of boys aged 8–11 years at Muhammadiyah 4 Elementary School in Malang. A cross-sectional design was employed, involving 98 boys who met the inclusion criteria. Data on height and weight were collected from school records, while sleep pattern information was obtained through parent-completed questionnaires. Statistical analysis was conducted using Fisher's exact test with a significance level of p ≤ 0.05. The results revealed no significant association between sleep patterns and children's height (p = 0.649). Most participants were 8 years old, with poor sleep patterns observed. However, based on maternal and paternal height, the majority were categorized as having an appropriate height. This study concludes that there is no significant relationship between sleep patterns and the height of boys aged 8–11 years at Muhammadiyah 4 Elementary School in Malang

Abstract

Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease that causes the narrowing of the arterial lumen, and it is considered the primary cause of cardiovascular diseases such as myocardial infarction (MI), heart failure, and stroke. Cardiovascular disease is the leading of death globally. Atherosclerosis has a complex pathophysiology, such as endothelial dysfunction, thickening of the tunica intima, and the formation of atheromatous plaques. After that process, foam cells will form, which is the key to the development of atherosclerosis. Petai ethanol extract contains antioxidants, which are flavonoids, saponins, and tannins, that can reduce the number of Low-Density lipoproteins (LDL). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of petai ethanol extract on the number of atherosclerotic foam cells in male white rats (Rattus norvegicus strain wistar) induced by lard. The method of this study was a genuinely experimental and post-test-only control group design with 25 rats divided into five control groups, which are one negative control group, one positive control group, and three treatment groups with extract doses of 100mg/kgBW, 200mg/kgBW and 400mg/kgBW. Observation of foam cells was carried out using a microscope with 400x magnification. Data were analyzed using Oneway ANOVA and Post Hoc Tamhane's test. The results of the study using the Oneway ANOVA test showed that there were significant differences between groups (p: 0.000). Post Hoc Tamhane's test between the positive control group and treatment groups 1, 2, and 3 can be seen that there is a significant difference between the formation of foam cells due to the administration of petai ethanol extract compared to positive control (p <0.05). This study concludes that Petai ethanol extract was effective in reducing the number of atherosclerotic foam cells formed.
