Abstract

This Qualitative Multiple Case Study was conducted to explore teachers’ experiences under the Human Resource Management practices of school heads. Selected elementary school teachers from public and private schools, and their school heads from Pagadian City Division were interviewed. This study has emerged from the major components Human Resource Management Practices, Challenges, and Coping Mechanisms of School Heads during the first Emergency School Years. Based on the components they experienced under their school heads, they were provided a clear picture of teachers’ tasks or activities, planned for the school in general, managed their workloads, listened to teachers’ voices, offered technical assistance, considered teachers’ emergency excuses, realigned budget for teachers’ supply and find means to support teachers. However, the school head also faced challenges such as communication due to the parade of tasks and insufficient resources for module printing. Nevertheless, they were able to solve these challenges. Different modalities call for different tasks, different tasks demand different preparations, different preparations advance to level of operations. School Heads resilient attitude toward the goal of negating these uncontrollable stretches and putting colleagues’ contexts on top of decision making save the day.

Abstract

This study explored the lived experiences of Single Fathers. Peculiar experiences like causes of broken marriages, struggles in raising their children, strategies in managing struggles, and future plans for their families were highlighted. Phenomenological approach was utilized to extract meanings from the participants’ constructs. Transcripts were analyzed using the Moustakas’ (1994) 8-step procedure. The SFs’ broken marriages are caused by infidelity, economic challenges, abuse of substance, and differences of religious belief. The SFs were burdened with fulfilling and managing multiple responsibilities, and attending to financial obligations. The SFs’ unwavering faith to the Almighty, their humbleness, and genuine love for their children enabled them to navigate the challenges of single parenthood. The SFs look forward to prioritizing the educational plan for their children, and developing themselves to become worthy and ready of building a complete and united family. The essence of the phenomenon is: The Single Fathers shouldered a heavy burden of responsibilities and financial obligations, and while raising their children alone, they drew strength from unwavering faith, humility, and a deep-seated love for their children, and planned to prioritize their children's education and personal development in pursuit of rebuilding a complete and united family once again.

Abstract

Field study courses are part of the university’s curriculum, which pre-service teachers are required to take. These courses allow them to apply what they have learned from their chosen programs and gain real-world experience in the teaching profession. The journey in field study is an excellent way to learn about the responsibilities of a teacher and to develop one’s growth in professional knowledge, skills, and attitudes. This study described the challenges and opportunities encountered, as well as the coping mechanisms used, by pre-service teachers during their field study journey. Seven pre-service teachers from a Philippine state university, enrolled in the Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in English during the academic year 2023-2024, were purposely chosen as participants of the study. A qualitative narrative inquiry research design and validated researcher-made, open-ended interview questions were used. The findings revealed that the student teachers were most challenged in adjusting to a new environment, lesson planning, adjusting to their role as practicing teachers, dealing with personal struggles, and managing personal expenses. Meanwhile, the study revealed that the pre-service teachers encountered opportunities primarily through learning from resource teachers, trying out the teacher's role, handling students, adapting to various teaching-learning environments, using technology in teaching, and learning from students. The coping strategies they used included personal motivation or willingness to learn, effective time management, balancing personal struggles as student teachers, applying learning theories, applying previous learning and life experiences, and personal ingenuity. These findings may provide educational institutions with opportunities to intensify and improve their practice teaching curriculum.

Abstract

This study investigated the effect of laboratory-based instructional methods on students' achievement in geometry within the educational context of Jalingo Metropolis, Taraba State, Nigeria, over six weeks. Recognising the potential of hands-on, experiential learning approaches in mathematics education, particularly in geometry, this research explored the effectiveness of laboratory-based instruction in enhancing student performance. Guided by three research questions and hypotheses, the quasi-experimental research design was employed on a sample of 160 Upper Basic II students, through pre-and post-test assessments. The Geometry Achievement Test (GAT) with a reliability index of 0.91 for the GAT, determined using the K-R20 method, was used for data collection. The mean and standard deviation statistics were employed to answer the three research questions, while covariance (ANCOVA) analysis was employed to test all hypotheses at a significance level of 0.05. The study found a significant improvement in geometry achievement among students exposed to the laboratory-based method, with 56% of the achievement score variance attributed to this method. Additionally, it identifies a noteworthy difference in achievement scores between male and female students taught geometry using the laboratory-based approach, with a significant interaction between the teaching method and gender. These findings underscore the potential of laboratory-based instructional methods to improve student engagement and comprehension in geometry, particularly in educational settings that face similar resource and teaching challenges. By fostering hands-on learning and critical thinking, this approach could be an effective strategy for enhancing math achievement and supporting curriculum development in Nigeria and comparable regions. Overall, the study contributes valuable insights to the discourse on innovative pedagogical practices in mathematics instruction, offering guidance for educators and policymakers aiming to improve mathematics education in similar contexts.

Abstract

This study explored the strategies employed by School Governing Bodies (SGBs) to enhance the quality of education in three selected secondary schools in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. Despite some improvement in Grade 12 results within the province, a downward trend was observed until 2016, raising concerns given that SGBs are legally mandated to improve educational quality. This qualitative research employed semi-structured interviews to gather data from twenty-two participants, including eighteen SGB members, two school principals, and two Education Development Officers (EDOs). The study applied Governance Theory as a framework to investigate the strategies used by SGBs to promote educational quality in their schools. The findings revealed that while SGB members were often inadequately trained for their governance roles, some employed strategies such as goal-sharing, fostering a common purpose, and engaging the community to improve education. However, the study also highlighted divergent views, with some participants questioning whether SGBs had any concrete strategies to enhance educational quality. Based on these findings, the study recommends the development of clear guidelines to assist SGBs in formulating effective strategies to improve the quality of education in schools. This paper will contribute to the body of existing knowledge, practice, and policy development to enhance the performance of the SGB to enhance the quality of education in South Africa.

Abstract

This study examined how group dynamics and visual cues strategies can foster academic performance of Senior Secondary II students of different cognitive abilities in Physics in Benue State, Nigeria. Specifically, the study determined which of the ability groups (i.e low, moderate and high) gained more when group dynamics and visual cues strategies were used in teaching Physics. The study adopted quasi-experimental design of pre-test, post-test non-randomized control group type. The population for this study comprised 815 SS II students offering Physics in public secondary schools in Makurdi Local Government Area in the 2023/2024 academic session, while a sample of 114 students was selected using multi-stage sampling procedure. The instruments for data collection are Physics Performance Test (PPT)  and Student Cognitive Ability Test (SCAT).  The PPT SCAT were validated by three experts. The reliability coefficient of the instruments were obtained using K-R20 and found to be 0.81 for PPT and 0.72 for SCAT. The collected data were analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer research questions and ANCOVA to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that the mean gain in academic performance score of students taught Physics using group dynamics strategy was 22.75 for high, 18.47 for moderate and 3.45 for low ability students. There was significant difference in the mean academic performance scores of low, moderate and high cognitive ability students when group dynamics strategy was used in teaching Physics. The mean gain in academic performance score of students taught Physics using visual cues strategy was 22.79 for high, 15.72 for moderate and 3.22 for low ability students. There was significant difference in the mean academic performance scores of low, moderate and high cognitive ability students when visual cues strategy was used in teaching Physics. The study has established that for both experimental groups (that is, group dynamics and visual cues strategies) the performance of the students increases in the order of low ability →moderate ability → high ability. The study concludes that the effectiveness of the two strategies is dependent on cognitive abilities of the students. The high ability students benefited most, followed by the moderate ability students while the low ability students benefited the least from each of the strategies. It was therefore recommended that teachers of Physics should employ group dynamics and visual cues teaching strategies in Physics class to ensure effective teaching and enhance academic performance of students in the subject and to ensure successful teaching and learning of the subject for improved cognitive abilities of students in Physics, among others.

Abstract

Global environmental crises pose significant challenges to achieving sustainable development, making it imperative to integrate environmental awareness into education at all levels. Early childhood, particularly the kindergarten stage, is a crucial period for cultivating environmental consciousness and instilling lifelong sustainable values. Despite its importance, research on early childhood environmental education (ECEE) in the Philippines remains limited, leaving a gap in understanding how young learners perceive and engage with their environment. This study sought to address this gap by exploring the environmental consciousness of 39 kindergarten pupils at a laboratory school in Central Luzon, Philippines. Using the draw-and-tell technique, combined with semiotic analysis, it examined both the visual and verbal expressions of these young learners. Pupils' drawings featured natural elements (flowers, trees, clouds, and the sun), representations of biodiversity (birds and animals), and the built environment (houses). Imaginative features, such as balloons and rainbows, showcased their creative interpretations of the environment. Oral narratives complemented the drawings, offering deeper insights into their perspectives on environmental issues. The findings underscore the potential of ECEE to nurture environmentally responsible behavior from an early age and inform the creation of green instructional resources, including storybooks designed specifically for kindergarten learners.
