Abstract

Background: In Bangladesh, the percentage of children found moderately and severely underweight were respectively 16.4% and 3.6% all over the country in 2018. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of and factors affecting childhood underweight<5 years old and identify socioeconomic inequalities contributing to childhood underweight in Bangladesh. Methods: Bangladesh Demographic Health Survey Data (2007, 2011, 2014 & 2017-2018) of 30,940 pairs were used for analysis. Chi-square tests were used to estimate the relationship between the independent variables chosen and underweight, binary logistic regression analysis was used to investigate potential risk factors, and decomposition analysis was conducted to assess inequality. Results: Binary logistic regression demonstrated that the children’s age, mother’s BMI, mother’s education level, father’s educational status, child delivery procedure, birth order of the child, recent diarrhea affectedness before the survey, sanitation, and wealth index were discovered to be essential variables affecting childhood underweight of children under 5 years old in Bangladesh.  Conclusion: The associated factors with underweight in this study should be considered when designing policies and programs, making it more effective to eradicate the underweight problem among children in Bangladesh.

Abstract

This study explores the essential factors and challenges shaping the Board Licensure Examination for Professional Teachers (BLEPT) performance of Bachelor of Elementary Education graduates of Batch 2022 within the new curriculum framework. It intended to profile, describe the influencing factors on exam performance in terms of personal, school, and home-related/family factors, discover the challenges perceived to impact performance, and propose a sustainability plan to achieve better performance in the licensure exam. A mixed-method approach, specifically descriptive phenomenology was employed with 51 respondents in the quantitative and 14 participants in the qualitative part. Key findings show the dominance of females (82%) in teacher education, most of them attended the formal review sessions (75%), and the majority are passers (82%).  Influences of factors have a very great extent which underscores positive self-perception in personal factors (4.36), satisfaction with school infrastructure, faculty competence, curriculum, and administration (4.57), and a generally supportive family environment, although with variations in parental monitoring (4.28). The challenges include work-life integration, financial strain, and psychological and emotional stress emphasizing the multifaceted nature of exam preparation.  No significant disparities emerged based on sex and BLEPT outcome (student/personal factors, p = .249; school-related factors, p = .664; and home/family-related factors, p = .855), highlighting consistent influences across diverse groups. However, significant distinctions were discovered in student and home-related factors between formal review attendees and non-attendees (with Cohen’s d values of 0 .69 (large effect) and 0 .65 (large effect), respectively), emphasizing the impactful role of formal reviews. The study recommends a sustainability action plan to lessen these challenges and enhance the preparation process for future exam takers.

Abstract

This qualitative study explores the reasons and challenges faced by former BSED English students who shifted to other programs. The study employed a case study approach, utilizing the Sharan Merriam technique and data triangulation method. Through Interviews with the seven former 1st-year BSED English students enrolled in the first semester, a thematic analysis was utilized to identify recurring patterns and themes. The study identifies reasons and challenges for students' shifting to other programs. The finding reveals that being inspired and influenced by others, as well as being curious about the program and the opportunity it offers, contribute to students’ reason to take up BSED English. Challenges encountered include difficulty with the topic and difficulty in speaking English. Students’ reasons for shifting are scholarship assistance and the difficulty of the major subject. The study concludes that these varying factors influenced the research participants to enroll in the BSED English program and shift to another program, indicating that it plays a significant role in students’ academic journey. This study gives insights into a crucial shift of students that has a significant implication for both students and the institution, as it holds an important role in students' career decision-making.

Abstract

This study was conducted on undergraduate students participating in the Global Innovation Scholars (GIS) program between Southern Oregon University (USA) and the University of Guanajuato (Mexico) in the first semester of 2024. The GIS program provides students with a hybrid international experience to learn about international business. Still, it develops in participating students the intercultural skills necessary to perform in a global world. The questionnaire developed qualitatively and quantitatively was focused on detecting the impacts of the course experience on Mexican students, but with an emphasis on the development, or not, of aspects related to intercultural skills. These impacts were measured against Karimova et al.’s model of areas of impact in intercultural learning. Also, results were measured against Neuner’s proposed intercultural skills and competencies needed for global success. The results showed that the GIS Mexican students were impacted positively in all the areas of intercultural learning and developed all the intercultural skills and competencies needed for global success listed by Karimova et al. (2024) and Neuner (2012). It was found that students expressed various aspects of improvement and change in perspective on the business world and the importance of developing intercultural skills for business success. Abstract

Calculus is a foundational discipline critical for both academic and professional growth. This study, conducted at a state college in Davao de Oro, Philippines, sought to develop Strategic Intervention Materials (SIMs) to address key challenges in Calculus I. Utilizing a developmental research design, the study followed a modified ADD model comprising three stages: analysis, design, and development. Participants included 44 prospective mathematics teachers, selected through random sampling, and five experts in mathematics education and instructional material development. Data collection involved a survey to identify the least mastered topics and validation sheets. The study identified specific areas of difficulty, including Maxima and Minima, Derivatives of Logarithmic and Exponential Functions, Functions with Arguments Approaching Infinity, Derivatives of Inverse Trigonometric Functions, Antiderivatives of Algebraic Functions, and the Constant of Integration. The resulting SIMs were evaluated and demonstrated outstanding content validity, face validity, clarity of presentation, logical organization, accuracy, and relevance. Calculus instructors are encouraged to integrate these SIMs into their curriculum to enhance student understanding in these challenging areas. The study further recommends that calculus teachers employ varied, research-based methodologies to effectively bridge learning gaps in calculus, ultimately fostering a more comprehensive grasp of fundamental calculus concepts.
