JOURNAL BASTRA (Language and Literature) is a publicly accessible journal published by the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Halu Oleo University. This journal is published four times a year, every January, April, July, and October. This journal contains the results of research (field or literature studies), theoretical studies, and critical studies covering several areas of study as follows. Indonesian language education includes studies on linguistic learning, phonology learning, morphology learning, syntax learning, semantic learning, pragmatics learning, discourse learning, sociolinguistic learning, and psycholinguistic learning. Indonesian literature education includes studies on poetry learning, fiction prose learning, and drama and film learning. Indonesian, includes studies on linguistics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, discourse, sociolinguistics, and psycholinguistics. Indonesian literature includes studies on poetry, prose fiction, drama, and film with a structural approach, stylistics, semiotics, sociology of literature, psychology of literature, psychoanalysis, literary ecology, deconstruction, philology, phenomenology, feminism, literary reception, and literary anthropology.

Abstract

This study aims to describe lesbian life as depicted in the novel Kembang Kertas: Ijinkan Aku Menjadi Lesbian by Eni Martini using a sociological approach. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method, with the novel text serving as the primary data source. Data were collected through intensive reading and systematic note-taking of excerpts relevant to the research focus. Data analysis was conducted by relating narrative elements to the social realities of Indonesian society. The findings indicate that lesbian life in the novel is portrayed through the existential experiences of the main character, who undergoes profound inner conflict in the search for identity while simultaneously facing strong social rejection, negative stigma, and psychological pressure from family and the surrounding environment. The novel functions as a sharp form of social criticism toward discriminatory attitudes within society. This study contributes significantly to the development of literary sociology, particularly by enriching insights into the representation of sexual minority groups in Indonesian literature and by reinforcing the role of literature as a social document that records cultural value conflicts within society.

Abstract

Social media has become a massive communication space for young people, significantly influencing the development of Indonesian vocabulary. This study examines the impact of social media on Indonesian vocabulary, particularly the rise of slang, loanwords, and the decline of standard language use. Using a literature review method, this research analyzed scholarly articles, books, and official documents relevant to the topic. The findings show that social media accelerates the spread of new vocabulary, both slang and borrowed words, which on one hand reflects the creativity and adaptability of the Indonesian language, but on the other hand poses challenges to the preservation of standard usage. This phenomenon also has the potential to weaken formal academic competence, particularly scientific writing skills among younger generations. The study highlights the importance of digital literacy as a strategy to balance linguistic creativity with adherence to language norms.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms of phonological language disorders in a 4-year-old child with speech delay and to analyze their causes using a psycholinguistic approach. This research employed a qualitative method with a case study design. Data collection techniques included direct observation, recorded speech samples, and semi-structured interviews with the child’s parents. The findings revealed three main types of phonological disorders: lisping, slurring, and cluttering. Lisping is characterized by the substitution of difficult-to-articulate phonemes such as /k/, /r/, and /s/ with simpler sounds like /t/, /l/, and /c/, reflecting weak articulatory control and phonemic perception. Slurring involves the omission of initial phonemes or syllables due to poor motor coordination and limited phonetic stimulation. Meanwhile, cluttering is marked by disorganized sentence structure, rapid speech, and successive elisions, indicating a mismatch between verbal processing speed and speech production ability. These three disorders are closely related to neurological immaturity and the influence of language models in the surrounding environment. This study emphasizes the importance of early detection and customized speech therapy to support optimal language acquisition in children. Future research may explore culturally based intervention models and technology-assisted therapies to support language development in children with similar conditions.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan penggunaan gaya bahasa dalam puisi yang terdapat pada buku teks Bahasa Indonesia kelas X SMA edisi revisi 2017 dan 2023 serta menafsirkan fungsi stilistika dan implikasinya terhadap pembelajaran sastra. Penelitian menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif dengan pendekatan stilistika. Data berupa larik puisi yang mengandung gaya bahasa dikumpulkan melalui teknik baca dan catat, kemudian dianalisis menggunakan model analisis Miles dan Huberman yang meliputi reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan simpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa puisi dalam buku teks memuat berbagai jenis gaya bahasa, yaitu perbandingan, pertautan, pengulangan, dan pertentangan. Gaya bahasa perbandingan, khususnya metafora dan personifikasi, menjadi bentuk yang paling dominan karena mampu memperkuat citraan, emosi, dan kedalaman makna. Keberadaan gaya bahasa lainnya berfungsi menciptakan hubungan simbolik, ritme puitik, serta kritik sosial yang tersirat dalam teks. Temuan ini menegaskan bahwa penggunaan majas dalam puisi tidak hanya berperan sebagai unsur estetika, tetapi juga sebagai strategi pembentukan makna yang relevan dengan pembelajaran apresiasi sastra di sekolah.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis eksistensi tokoh utama dalam novel Perempuan yang Menangis kepada Bulan Hitam karya Dian Purnomo melalui perspektif feminisme eksistensialis. Kajian ini berfokus pada bentuk-bentuk ketidakadilan gender yang dialami tokoh utama serta strategi perlawanan yang dilakukan untuk menegaskan eksistensinya sebagai subjek. Penelitian menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dengan pendekatan feminisme eksistensialis Simone de Beauvoir dan teori ketidakadilan gender Mansour Fakih. Data berupa kutipan naratif dan dialog dalam novel yang mengandung representasi marginalisasi, subordinasi, stereotip, kekerasan, serta tindakan resistensi tokoh. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui dokumentasi dan pembacaan kritis, sedangkan analisis data menggunakan model Miles dan Huberman yang meliputi reduksi, penyajian, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya ketidakadilan gender dengan dominasi kekerasan, serta bentuk perlawanan yang mencakup penolakan budaya patriarki, pengembangan intelektual, sikap pantang menyerah, keberanian, dan kemandirian melalui kerja. Temuan ini menegaskan bahwa tokoh Magi Diela tidak hanya direpresentasikan sebagai korban budaya patriarki, tetapi sebagai agen yang secara aktif membangun eksistensi diri melalui kesadaran, tindakan, dan pilihan hidup yang otonom. Penelitian ini berkontribusi dalam penguatan kajian sastra feminis eksistensialis serta memperluas pemahaman mengenai representasi perjuangan perempuan dalam konteks budaya patriarki.

Abstract

Relasi makna serta relasi penamaan dan referen tidak dapat dipisahkan dalam proses penamaan suatu hal karena melalui nama yang diberikan dapat terlihat kesinambungan antara makna kata dan konsep yang melatarbelakanginya. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menyoroti hubungan konseptual antara relasi makna dan relasi antara nama serta referen dalam kerangka penamaan. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah kajian pustaka dengan pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif yang menelaah 14 studi literatur yang memiliki ruang lingkup serupa terkait kajian penamaan semantik dalam linguistik. Pola umum yang ditemukan dalam setiap literatur sebagian besar mencakup aspek bentuk fisik, domisili, hingga budaya masyarakat. Simpulan berdasarkan hasil kajian pustaka menunjukkan bahwa relasi makna berperan sebagai dasar hubungan antara bahasa dan realitas dalam membentuk relasi antara nama dan referen dalam sistem bahasa. Relasi makna berfungsi menjelaskan hubungan internal antarunsur bahasa, sedangkan relasi nama–referen menunjukkan hubungan eksternal antara bahasa dan realitas yang dirujuknya. Penelitian ini memiliki implikasi langsung dalam memperkaya kajian penamaan dalam linguistik yang mencakup penamaan tumbuhan, makanan, hingga produk penjualan.

Abstract

This study examines the syntactic interference of the Moi language with Indonesian in West Papua. The goal is to identify forms of sentence structure deviations that arise due to the influence of the Moi grammatical system. Using qualitative descriptive methods and contrastive analysis, data were collected from Moi speakers' speech in various communication contexts. The results indicate interference in word order (S–O–P), nominal phrase structure (N–Num), and the placement of adverbs and negations that differ from standard Indonesian. This phenomenon illustrates the transfer of patterns from Moi, which has a distinctive structure and places verbs at the end of clauses. In general, this interference is not simply a linguistic error, but rather a form of syntactic adaptation in bilingual situations that forms a local variant of Indonesian with a Moi accent.

Abstract

Official letters are still widely used as a medium of formal communication in various educational settings, ranging from schools and education offices to higher education institutions. However, in practice, the effectiveness of letters as a means of conveying information and policies often encounters various linguistic constraints. This study aims to describe the effectiveness of letters as a formal communication medium in educational environments and to examine their relationship with writing skills. The study employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive qualitative research design. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews with school principals, teachers, educational staff, officials and staff of education offices, lecturers, higher education administrative staff, as well as eighth-grade junior high school students as supporting informants. The data were analyzed thematically through the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that letters continue to play an important role as a formal communication medium, yet their effectiveness has not been fully optimized. The main problems identified include unclear language use, the employment of lengthy and overly normative sentences, and variations in writing quality influenced by the writers’ writing skills. The ineffectiveness of letters results in low levels of recipient comprehension and the emergence of a need for further clarification. This study concludes that the effectiveness of letters as a formal communication medium is highly dependent on the quality of formal writing skills. These findings imply the importance of strengthening official letter writing skills in school learning as well as in institutional communication practices within the education sector.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the transformation of the lexicon of traditional cooking utensils used by the Lease Island community and to examine the worldview and potential development of local wisdom–based agribusiness embedded in these lexicons. Employing an ethnolinguistic approach integrated with an agribusiness perspective, this research explores the interrelationship between language preservation, cultural values, and local economic empowerment. The data, consisting of lexicons of traditional cooking utensils, were collected through library research, field observations, and in-depth interviews conducted in three customary villages on Lease Island, namely Tuhaha, Ihamahu, and Ouw. The data were analyzed by classifying the lexicons according to their functions, linguistic forms, and cultural as well as economic meanings. The findings reveal that technological transformation has led to the decline in the use of traditional cooking utensil lexicons such as sempe, porna, tungku, balanga, tajela, aniong, and kamboti, which formerly embodied values of hard work, togetherness, honesty, and independence within the Lease Island community. From an agribusiness perspective, these lexicons and utensils represent a local agribusiness value chain encompassing raw material supply, production, processing, and distribution of traditional foods. The preservation of traditional lexicons thus functions not only as an effort to maintain cultural identity but also as a strategic resource for creative economic development, local culinary branding, and sustainable, culture-based agribusiness. This study underscores that the conservation of traditional lexicons is essential to sustaining linguistic, cultural, and economic continuity in the midst of modernization..

Abstract

Penelitian ini mengkaji bagaimana wacana media mengonstruksi isu legalisasi thrifting melalui kerangka analisis wacana kritis yang dikemukakan oleh Teun A. van Dijk. Penelitian berfokus pada teks berita berjudul “Pedagang Baju Bekas Minta Dilegalkan” yang diterbitkan oleh Harian Mistar, dengan tujuan mengungkap struktur makro, superstruktur, dan struktur mikro yang membentuk posisi ideologis dalam teks. Pendekatan kualitatif digunakan melalui teknik dokumentasi, termasuk pembacaan mendalam dan pencatatan, dengan peneliti bertindak sebagai instrumen analisis utama. Keabsahan data dijamin melalui triangulasi teori dengan menyelaraskan temuan tekstual dengan teori analisis wacana yang telah mapan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pada tingkat makro, pemberitaan membingkai legalisasi sebagai solusi rasional atas ketidakpastian ekonomi dan konflik regulasi, dengan menekankan keberlangsungan hidup jutaan pedagang kecil. Pada tingkat superstruktur, narasi disusun secara sistematis untuk menonjolkan argumen sosial-ekonomi serta melegitimasi tuntutan pedagang sebelum menghadirkan persoalan regulasi. Pada tingkat mikro, pilihan leksikal, pola sintaksis, dan strategi retoris membangun citra pedagang sebagai kelompok yang terpinggirkan namun memiliki legitimasi moral, sekaligus mengalihkan perhatian publik dari isu pelanggaran hukum menuju wacana keadilan sosial. Secara keseluruhan, penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa wacana media tidak berfungsi sebagai penyampai informasi yang netral, melainkan turut berperan aktif dalam membentuk persepsi publik dan arah ideologis terkait kebijakan ekonomi serta sektor informal.
