Abstract

As cities confront escalating climate pressures and resource constraints, the adaptive transformation of existing buildings has become central to sustainable built environment agendas. Yet, despite its growing prominence, the intellectual development of adaptive reuse remains conceptually dispersed across heritage, sustainability, and urban studies scholarship. This study provides a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of 468 Scopus-indexed journal articles published between 1996 and 2025 to systematically map the evolution, structure, and thematic convergence of adaptive reuse research within sustainability discourse. Combining performance analysis with science mapping techniques—including co-occurrence network analysis, thematic evolution, and Multiple Correspondence Analysis—the study identifies major research trajectories, geographic patterns, and influential publications shaping the field. The findings reveal a decisive shift from heritage-oriented conservation narratives toward an integrated sustainability framework increasingly aligned with circular economy principles, lifecycle assessment, and climate mitigation strategies. Publication growth accelerates significantly after 2020, marking adaptive reuse as a central pillar in contemporary sustainability-oriented built environment research. The analysis demonstrates that adaptive reuse now operates as a conceptual and strategic bridge linking cultural heritage, environmental performance, governance, and urban regeneration. Rather than a niche design response, adaptive reuse has evolved into a structurally embedded sustainability instrument within circular and transition-based paradigms, redefining how cities approach low-carbon and resource-efficient transformation.

Abstract

DKI Jakarta Province is the capital city of the Republic of Indonesia which is the largest city and is developing every year. Population growth and the increasing need for buildings, urban facilities and utilities are some of the impacts of developments that occur in the capital city. The future of DKI Jakarta Province will no longer be the capital city but will become an economic center, a trade center, a business city, a financial city or a trade services city, a global or international service city. In addition, DKI Jakarta Province also has the opportunity to become a center for health, education, and culture. Environmental conditions and dense circulation are unavoidable, due to the proliferation of both commercial and residential developments in DKI Jakarta Province. From this trend, there needs to be an idea for a more effective and sustainable development concept, especially during the pandemic of Covid-19, which avoids activities in crowded areas so as to avoid crowds. COVID-19 is a pandemic that affects all sectors of the field, as a result, it is necessary to adapt designs both in terms of interior, exterior and even the built environment to adjust to the new normal order such as social distancing. Therefore, Changes in Architectural Design Concepts as A Form Adaptation After The Pandemic of Covid-19 becomes a study of how changes in architectural design concepts as a form of adaptation from the Pandemic of Covid-19 can be learned from the past for an unpredictable future because there is no who never knows when the Pandemic of Covid-19 will end or whether there will be other diseases and viruses in the future. The focus is on minimizing land use, improving the environment, and knowing changes in building design, especially buildings along with new normal conditions during the Pandemic of Covid-19 in DKI Jakarta Province. The method used is a literature study method by searching for the latest scientific books and articles, citations in scientific sources, published bibliographies and others then analyzed so that the objectives and results of the research are expected. It can be concluded that Changes in Architectural Design Concepts as A Form Adaptation After The Pandemic of Covid-19 can be a reference for the design of DKI Jakarta in the future so that DKI Jakarta becomes a friendly city that is ready to face the new normal era after the COVID-19 pandemic has passed.

Abstract

Climate-induced disaster is at the center of scholarly investigation due to its increasing unpredictability and intensity, time-critical nature, and the economic losses and trauma associated with it. While there are a few studies that link willingness-to-pay (WTP) on early warning systems (EWS) for climate-induced disaster resilience, which is an example of socio-technological infrastructure, research on micro-level data WTP is still limited. Furthermore, housing conditions, which are critical in resilience discourse within the architecture and urban design fields, are not well documented for WTP analysis. While international counterparts have identified specific WTP amounts for yearly schemes, the cities in the Philippines, considered as a hotspot for climate-induced disaster, have no example for a context specific WTP model. This study investigates WTP for improvement to climate-induced disaster EWS. It used Legazpi City, a high-risk multi-hazard city having 20 or more yearly typhoons, coastal flooding, storm surges, and riverine flooding, as a case study, and mixed methods, a survey through purposive sampling, KIIs, and GIS modelling as tactics. Applying OLS regression, geostructural analysis and SEM path analysis, it was found that trauma, in the form of house clean-up, is the strongest predictor for EWS investment.

Abstract

Ecotourism is a form of tourism that promotes travel in natural settings, which is currently favoured by visitors. This rising interest for ecotourism will only be satisfactory if the destination could provide sufficient tourism facilities. Such facilities enable travellers to access the destination as well as allow them to experience the distinctiveness of a place and appreciate the natural environment. Bukit Lawang is one of the most popular ecotourism destinations in Indonesia. Located at the rainforest in Gunung Leuser National Park, Bukit Lawang offers visitors with hiking trails and opportunity to observe orangutans in their native habitat. This paper aims to identify the elements of tourism supporting facilities in Bukit Lawang. By implementing a mixed method research, this paper adapts ecotourism variables and triangulates data from observation, questionnaires, and interviews. It is found that tourism supporting facilities in Bukit Lawang remain unsatisfactory because they are yet to be properly organised. To improve the condition, the facilities and services in Bukit Lawang need to be adequately structured, arranged, and managed by strengthening the body of the Destination Management Organisation (DMO) thus the objective of ecotourism in Bukit Lawang can be achieved.

Abstract

Public open space has a very high role for the city community, apart from being related to the physical environment, public open space functions as a variety of social and cultural meanings at a very high level. Public open space can be seen based on the identity place. There are four aspects that can from the identity of a place, namely: sustainability, self_esteem, self_ability, and uniqueness in the Merdeka square. This namely accessibility, comfort, activity, and social interaction. The findings show that the merdeka squareas a public open space already contains the identity of the place. However, there are many problems with the arrangement of the merdeka square area which is still lacking, causing the view that binds the merdeka square area to be invisible. Therefore, the government must improve the arrangement of the area so that it blends with the identity of the place around it.

Abstract

In tropical regions, air-conditioning systems are among the main contributors to building energy consumption, and their energy demand may account for more than half of the total building load. Therefore, improving cooling efficiency has become an important issue in current building energy management. This study experimentally investigates a solar-powered room cooling system using cold energy storage to reduce the air temperature in a test room with dimensions of 4.8 m × 3.7 m × 3.3 m. The proposed cooling unit combines thermoelectric cooling technology with an actively operated phase change material as the cold storage medium. In this active configuration, heat exchange between the indoor air and the PCM is enhanced through forced convection supported by additional mechanical components. The experimental results show that the system was able to lower the indoor air temperature to 26.75 °C and achieve a relative humidity of 58% when the average outdoor temperature was 29.55 °C. The maximum coefficient of performance of the CES system reached 0.7, with an average value of 0.39 during the first day of operation.

Abstract

Place attachment is a state in which an individual feels attached to a place due to repeated positive attractions and interactions. The increasing existence of coffee shops is becoming a new lifestyle trend today. The ability of public spaces to attract the attention of visitors to be comfortable and at home can be seen from the attractiveness factor. The attraction factor consists of two categories, namely places and events. The category of places is described in the attractiveness of design and comfort, while the category of events is described in the activity. The purpose of this study was to determine the place attachments to coffee shops. The research method used is a mixed method with 100 questionnaires to coffee shop visitors and field observations. The research was analyzed using descriptive methods. The result shows that tables and chairs are interior elements that are the attraction of the design, the cozy and intimate atmosphere is a factor in visitor comfort, and the activities that are liked and often done in coffee shops are drinking coffee, socializing/hanging out, and studying/working.

Abstract

Online-based bureaucratic services have become a strategic instrument for improving the accessibility, speed, transparency, and accountability of local government services. In Tebing Tinggi City, digital service initiatives have been introduced by several public institutions, yet their success depends on the readiness of the bureaucratic apparatus responsible for operating and maintaining these systems. This study examines the level of apparatus readiness and analyzes its influence on socio-economic community development program services. A quantitative approach was employed through descriptive and explanatory analysis. Data were collected using questionnaires administered to 253 government officials involved in public service delivery. Apparatus readiness was assessed through understanding or insight, technology mastery, mental development, moral development, formal education, informal education, and material incentives. The findings show that apparatus readiness is generally within the moderate to high category. Regression analysis confirms that readiness variables simultaneously have a significant effect on socio-economic development service performance. Partially, technology mastery, moral development, and material incentives exert significant positive effects, whereas understanding or insight, mental development, and formal education do not show significant partial effects. The study highlights the need to strengthen digital competence, ethical commitment, and performance-based incentive systems to improve online public service delivery and support urban socio-economic development programs

Abstract

Sustainable tourism requires destination managers to maintain operational stability while balancing economic, social, and environmental priorities. In Indonesia, tourism supports community welfare and national economic development, yet since 2020 the sector has been disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic, which reduced tourist visits, weakened local businesses, and decreased community income. Several destinations also face sustainability issues, including environmental pollution, inadequate safety management, and damaged facilities that may endanger visitors. This study aims to develop a systematic procedure for creating a sustainable tourism value proposition that improves business performance while strengthening social and environmental responsibility. A qualitative library research method was used through a literature review approach. Secondary data were collected from books, journal articles, government documents, institutional reports, and relevant online sources. The data were analyzed by comparing, differentiating, critically reviewing, synthesizing, and summarizing literature and empirical examples. The findings show that sustainable tourism value propositions can be developed through seven activities: identifying tourists, analyzing tourist needs, recognizing destination resources, examining value chain activities, controlling costs, determining value proposition dimensions, and applying sustainability indicators. These activities are realized through eleven dimensions: newness, performance, customization, getting the job done, design, brand or status, price, cost reduction, risk reduction, accessibility, convenience, and usability.
