Abstract

The growing use of Artificial Intelligence in education presents both opportunities and ethical challenges for Islamic boarding school (pesantren) education. While Artificial Intelligence may enhance learning efficiency and institutional management, its integration within pesantren must be guided by ethical principles rooted in Islamic values. This article examines the use of Artificial Intelligence in pesantren education through the framework of Islamic ethics, emphasizing trust (amanah), justice (‘adl), responsibility (mas’uliyyah), and ethical conduct (adab) as foundational principles. Using a qualitative conceptual approach, the study analyzes Islamic ethical perspectives as a normative foundation for evaluating and guiding the adoption of Artificial Intelligence in pesantren education. The findings indicate that Artificial Intelligence should not be treated as a neutral or autonomous technology, but as a moral instrument that remains under human authority and ethical accountability. The article also identifies key ethical challenges, including algorithmic bias, the erosion of human responsibility, data privacy concerns, and the tendency toward instrumental approaches to education. Furthermore, the study highlights the pedagogical, institutional, and moral implications of Artificial Intelligence use in pesantren education, particularly in preserving educators’ roles, ensuring ethical governance, and supporting students’ moral and character development. The article concludes that a human-centered and value-oriented approach is essential to ensure that Artificial Intelligence contributes positively to pesantren education without compromising its moral and spiritual mission.

Abstract

Inheritance is one of the instruments of wealth distribution that is clearly regulated in Islamic law. A fair and proportionate inheritance distribution mechanism not only has legal implications but also significantly impacts the community's economic development. This article discusses inheritance management from an Islamic economic perspective, emphasizing the functions of distribution and social justice and their role in strengthening the financial structure of the family and society. This study uses a qualitative-descriptive approach based on the study of literature from the Qur'an, Hadith, and the views of fiqh scholars as well as contemporary Islamic economic literature. The results of the discussion showed that inheritance management in accordance with sharia can reduce social disparities, strengthen family solidarity, prevent the accumulation of wealth in a few parties, and encourage a healthy circulation of wealth in society. Thus, inheritance management is not only a private family affair, but also has a real contribution to the economic development of a just society.

Abstract

The global environmental crisis has predominantly been framed as a technical problem demanding scientific solutions, managerial interventions, and green technologies, while the ethical dimension shaping human-nature relations remains marginalized in analytical discourse. This approach leaves fundamental questions unresolved, as ecological degradation persists despite advances in technological innovation and environmental policy. This article proposes an alternative reading by positioning the environmental crisis as a moral-civilizational failure through an ecotheological study of Muhammad Ratib An Nabulsi's Qur'anic exegesis. Employing a qualitative hermeneutic approach with thematic analysis, environmentally-themed Qur'anic verses are read constellatively alongside An Nabulsi's interpretations to reveal a value structure linking faith, stewardship (amanah), balance, and ecological responsibility. This reading demonstrates that within An Nabulsi's exegesis, environmental destruction is understood as carrying spiritual consequences stemming from distorted human life orientations— particularly through consumerism, excess (isrāf), and the erosion of moral boundaries. Nature becomes positioned as a space of ethical accountability reflecting the quality of faith and civilizational maturity. By establishing Islamic ecotheology as a framework of religious ethics, this article offers theoretical contributions to contemporary environmental ethics discourse, specifically in responding to the global ecological crisis amid technological acceleration, instrumental rationality, and modern civilizational transformation.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the psychological characteristics of the Children of Israel as described in the Qur'an through an analysis of Sayyid Qutb's Fi Zilal al-Qur'an, with a focus on collective behavior patterns and historical factors that shaped their characteristics, such as rebelliousness, materialistic tendencies, racial arrogance, inconsistency in faith, and dependence on worldly power. This study uses a qualitative method with a library research approach, combining thematic analysis of Qur'anic verses and a psychological-historical approach to understand their psychological dynamics in the context of oppression and liberation. The results of the study show that, according to Sayyid Qutb, the character of the Children of Israel was the result of collective trauma caused by slavery in Egypt, which gave rise to spiritual inferiority, defiance of God's commands, and a materialistic orientation that shifted divine values. racial and intellectual arrogance reflects a deviation in understanding the concept of the “chosen people,” while inconsistency in faith represents spiritual hypocrisy that weakens monotheism. Qutb viewed this pattern as a universal phenomenon that serves as a warning to all of humanity not to get caught up in formal religious practices without spiritual depth. The main value of this research lies in its contribution to enriching thematic interpretation studies through a psychological-historical approach, emphasizing the relationship between human inner conditions and historical experiences in the formation of religious character, and encouraging Muslims to cultivate authentic, humble faith oriented towards the mandate of revelation, rather than outward symbols or claims of group superiority.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to conceptually analyze the validity of authentic assessment instruments based on Islamic values in the context of the evaluation of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning in the contemporary era. Methodology: This study adopted a library research approach with a conceptual–descriptive design to construct a theoretical understanding of Islamic validity in authentic assessment. Data sources consisted of primary Islamic classical texts and secondary contemporary literature on validity, authentic assessment, and Islamic education, selected from peer-reviewed publications indexed in Scopus, Google Scholar, and DOAJ (2019–2025). The analysis involved systematic identification, screening, thematic categorization, and synthesis of the literature to integrate modern validity theory with the Islamic values of sidq, ‘adl, and amanah. The study applied theoretical triangulation to ensure credibility, resulting in an integrative conceptual model that links empirical, interpretive, and ethical spiritual dimensions of assessment validity. Results: The results of the study show that validity in PAI must be understood as a unity between scientific validity and moral validity based on the values of sidq (honesty), 'adl (justice), and amanah (responsibility). The integration of Islamic values in assessment instruments can be carried out through three approaches, namely epistemological (intention to seek truth), methodological (justice in procedures), and axiological (use of results for the benefit). Applications/Originality/Value: This study proposes an original three-dimensional Islamic Validity model—empirical, interpretive, and spiritual—that extends contemporary validity theory by integrating Islamic ethical values. The model can be applied in designing authentic and ethically responsible digital assessments in PAI. By addressing ethical challenges in assessment digitization and strengthening students’ character, this research contributes to a scientifically valid, socially just, and spiritually meaningful evaluation paradigm aligned with 21st-century learning.

Abstract

Purpose: This article examines the philosophy of education proposed by Ibn Ṭufayl as reflected in Hayy ibn Yaqẓān, aiming to reconstruct its epistemological framework, pedagogical methodology, and educational objectives, as well as to assess its relevance to contemporary education. Methodology: This study employs a qualitative approach through library research, utilizing conceptual, hermeneutic, and reflective analysis of the primary text alongside recent scholarly literature in the fields of philosophy of education and Islamic education. Results: The findings indicate that Ibn Ṭufayl’s educational epistemology is gradual and integrative, beginning with sensory experience, developing through rational reasoning, and culminating in intuitive-spiritual insight. Methodologically, education is understood as a natural process that positions the environment as the primary learning space and learners as active subjects of discovery, while the role of the teacher shifts toward that of a reflective facilitator. Educational aims in Ibn Ṭufayl’s perspective extend beyond cognitive mastery toward existential transformation that integrates knowledge, values, and character formation. Applications/Originality/Value: This study further demonstrates that Ibn Ṭufayl’s thought has strong relevance to the challenges of twenty first century education, particularly in experiential learning, self directed learning, reflective practice, and the integration of ethical and spiritual dimensions. Nevertheless, its application requires contextual adaptation to suit the pluralistic and institutional realities of modern education. This article contributes to the discourse of Islamic educational philosophy by offering a holistic, humanistic, and contextual educational model.

Abstract

Purpose: Analyzing the practice of Online Loans (Pinjol) from the perspective of Islamic business ethics with a focus on the Main Principle of Usul Fiqh: Lā Ḍarara Wa Lā Ḍirāra (should not harm oneself or others). This study aims to identify the elements of harm (ḍarar) caused by Pinjol and formulate a binding contemporary ijtihad (Ilzāmiy) regarding its legality. Methodology: This research uses a normative legal research method. Results: This study shows that online lending (pinjol) causes extensive multidimensional harm, including: Financial exploitation: High interest rates that resemble riba (usury). Psychological/social impacts: Aggressive debt collection that violates the protection of life (hifẓ al-nafs). Informational harm: Personal data leaks. The principle of "Lā Ḍarara Wa Lā Ḍirāra" (the principle of "lawfulness and justice") is implemented as an ethical criterion through three functions: Hadhr (limiting maximum interest rates), Ibti'ād (preventing consumer harm), and Tawāzun (balancing profits). Based on their intensity, contemporary ijtihad recommends that online lending practices with "darar fāḥish" (large losses) are haram. Applications/Originality/Value: Offering constructive solutions in the form of developing alternative models of Islamic financing free from ḍarar, such as Qardhul Hasan or Murābaḥah. This is an effort to achieve social welfare (Taḥqīq Maṣāliḥ) through strict regulations and Islamic ethics in the digital financial ecosystem.

Abstract

PAI learning in schools still tends to be uniform and teacher-centered, so it is not fully able to accommodate individual differences of students. In the context of the Independent Curriculum, differentiated learning is a relevant approach because it is in line with the spirit of "independent learning" and Islamic values such as justice ('adl), compassion (rahmah), and responsibility (amanah). The purpose of this study is to examine the concepts, principles, and implementation of differentiated learning in PAI based on theoretical reviews and scientific literature, as well as analyze the relevance of this approach to the development of students' Islamic character and values. This research uses a qualitative method with a library research approach . Data was obtained from various written sources such as books, scientific articles, academic journals, and the results of previous research that discussed the concept of differentiation in the context of Islamic education. The results of the study show that differentiated learning in PAI can be applied through three main strategies, namely content, process, and product differentiation. This strategy allows teachers to adjust the material, methods, and forms of evaluation according to students' abilities and interests. Islamic principles such as justice, compassion, and responsibility become the theological foundation in its implementation, so that learning not only improves academic results, but also shapes the spiritual and moral character of students. The main obstacles to the implementation of this approach include the limitations of teacher competence, infrastructure, and the learning paradigm that is still teacher-centered. Therefore, continuous training, collaboration between educators, and learning innovations are needed to support optimal implementation. differentiated learning in Islamic Religious Education makes a significant contribution to the creation of an adaptive, humanist, and learning process based on Islamic values. This approach not only increases the effectiveness of learning, but also strengthens the purpose of Islamic education in forming a generation of faithful, knowledgeable, and noble character.

Abstract

The concept of ahl al-dzikr in the Qur'an is a normative as well as an epistemological category that functions as a reference for religious authorities in Islam. In the classical Islamic tradition, ahl al-dzikr is understood as a subject of knowledge that gains legitimacy through scientific competence, interpretation methodology, sanad transmission, and institutional recognition. However, the development of the digital space has significantly reconfigured the mechanisms of formation and legitimacy of religious authorities. Social media and online da'wah platforms encourage a shift in authority from a scientific basis to a visibility, performativity, and algorithmic basis, thus giving rise to an implicit redefinition of the meaning of ahl al-dzikr. This article aims to critically analyze the shift in the meaning of ahl al-dzikr in the digital era as a paradigmatic transformation of Islamic religious authority, not just a change in the medium of da'wah. This research uses a qualitative approach with a conceptual-critical design through a systematic literature study of normative-classical sources and contemporary studies of digital Islam. The analysis was carried out by integrating critical discourse analysis and contextual hermeneutics to read the tension between the normative meaning of the Qur'an and the practice of religious authority in the digital space. The results of the study show that the shift in the meaning of ahl al-dzikr has implications for the fragmentation of authority, the relativization of religious references, and the blurring of the boundary between scientific authority and religious popularity. Although the digital space opens up opportunities for wider religious participation, this condition poses epistemological and theological problems related to the legitimacy of religious authority. This article offers a rearticulation of ahl al-dzikr as an epistemological concept that remains rooted in Islamic scientific principles, as well as adaptive to digital reality, in order to strengthen responsible digital religious literacy.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the concepts of khouf and roja' thematically in the Qur'an, including their interpretation by exegetes, and to analyze the function of these two concepts as a spiritual basis for achieving emotional balance and peace of mind. In addition, this study also explains the relevance and application of khouf and roja' in the practice of mindfulness from an Islamic perspective, as a strategy for overcoming psychological and spiritual crises in the present day. Thus, this study is expected to contribute theoretically to the study of the Qur'an and Sufism, as well as practically to the development of mental health methods based on Islamic values. This study uses a qualitative method with library research. Data was collected through documentation techniques on verses from the Qur'an, tafsir books, and contemporary Sufism and psychology literature, then analyzed using a maudhū‘ī (thematic) interpretation approach. The results of the study show that khouf functions as moral awareness that fosters caution, self-control, and spiritual discipline, while roja' acts as a source of optimism, inner peace, and psychological resilience. The integration of the two forms an emotional and spiritual balance that is an important foundation in the Islamic perspective of mindfulness. Thus, Qur'anic mindfulness is not only oriented towards emotional regulation, but also towards strengthening faith and character building. This study concludes that the concepts of khouf and roja' are relevant to be developed as a holistic Islamic mindfulness model, which combines psychological well being and spiritual depth in facing modern life crises.
