Abstract

This study aims to determine the factors and impact of online games on the behavior of Muslim adolescents in Jorong Tabek, Tanah Datar District, West Sumatra. The field methods used in this qualitative research were observation, interviews, focus group discussions, and the informants' documentation, which were determined by purposive sampling. The theoretical perspective of this research uses structural-functional and hipper-reality. The results of this study indicate that online games have negative and positive impacts on Muslim adolescents. For informants, online games have a positive impact because they are a medium of entertainment, relieve boredom, spend time, enrich friendships, and help them increase their English vocabulary. On the other hand, the informants also admitted that online games impacted negligence in performing prayers and other religious activities such as wirid and tadarus during Ramadan, negligence to studying, forgetting to eat, ignoring parents' words, and saying harsh words up to physical violence. The triggering factors that caused the informants to choose to play online games were boredom, lack of facilities and infrastructure to channel their hobbies, and the fact that the online game was currently viral.

Abstract

Selametan tolak bala is a ritual that Javanese people usually do during the pagebluk period. During the current Covid-19 pandemic, some people still carry out this ritual. This study seeks to examine from a psychological point of view why the ritual is still carried amid restrictions on community activities. This research was conducted by literature review method using sources from books, previous research, articles from mass media and website pages, aiming to collect theories and pieces of information relevant to the topics studied in this research. The results of this research are selametan tolak bala could be a form of problem-focused coping if the practitioners believed that this ritual could stop the outbreak. It could be a form of emotional-focused coping if the practitioners believed that this ritual is done to eliminate the anxiety. As Javanese local wisdom, whatever the meaning coping strategies, selametan tolak bala could be one of the efforts in dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic, especially in reducing anxiety levels. Therefore it had to be done by enforcing strict health protocols to avoid the possibility of increasing positive cases of Covid-19 after the ritual implementation, which thwarts the ritual’s purpose.

Abstract

Social media use has increased significantly in recent years, including the YouTube platform. The phenomenon allows religious organizations such as the Lampung Province Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) to convey religious messages to the wider community. There are various understandings, approaches, and different interpretations of Islamic teachings. This diversity often results in division and tension, increasing the potential for intolerance and radicalism. This article is qualitatively descriptive in analyzing the implementation of religious moderation on the “MUI Lampung” YouTube channel; how MUI Lampung constructed lectures on religious moderation from March 2020 to September 2021. This research aims to discover, describe, and analyze the content of religious moderation da'wah conducted by MUI Lampung using Teun A. Van Dijk's discourse analysis. The conclusions of this study are: (1) Lampung MUI packages da'wah videos by inserting the notion of moderation; (2) in each content of its YouTube channel, MUI Lampung provides support to the government in applying moderation to the community; (3) the affiliation of organizational power in conveying moderation discourse influences the ulema in conveying his da'wah.

Abstract

Differences are a necessity that humans cannot deny, including differences in matters of belief and religion. Humans living side by side in a community should be able to create a harmonious, safe and peaceful life. However, harmonious relations between religious adherents are often disrupted for various reasons. Religious people, who should respect and care for one another, are often provoked so that differences, which should be understood as a necessity and a gift, sometimes fuel divisions. By using Library Studies, this study explores sources that can be used as arguments for religious people to respect each other and create peace, especially in Islamic mystical teachings. It can be concluded that peace and harmony are the hope of everyone, including those living in a country. Differences should not be used as an excuse to criticize each other and eradicate the existence of different groups; this research found that people must complement each other and realize the importance of maintaining unity, maintaining relationships in interacting and living together among religious communities.

Abstract

This study investigates the altruism found in the al-Qur'an and its relevance to philanthropic practices in the Satu Amal Indonesia (SAI) organization. This study uses the maudhu'i interpretation method of the al-Qur'an verses related to altruism. In addition to the relevant verses of the al-Qur'an, this study collected data from respondents who filled out several questions through the Google Form. The data is then analyzed in the context of altruistic values and their relevance to philanthropic practices in SAI. This study reinforces previous research that the millennial generation tends to have philanthropic behavior. The millennial generation of members of the SAI organization internalizes and applies the values of altruism contained in the al-Qur'an. In addition, this study reveals that SAI members tend to participate in philanthropic activities carried out online and use social media as a platform for promotion. Overall, this study shows that the millennial generation, particularly members of SAI, apply the value of altruism and show philanthropic behavior; the same values are taught in the Qur'an, to be precise in Q.s. al-Hasyr verse 9. The values of altruism are reflected in patterns of caring, collaborating, sustainable, and cooperative attitudes.

Abstract

Despite the global shift toward contactless greetings prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic, a substantial number of young people in Nigeria continue to engage in the practice of shaking hands. Previous empirical studies on COVID-19 and handshakes have primarily focused on adherence rates in different countries, with limited attention to understanding the underlying beliefs influencing adherence or non-adherence to preventive measures. This study explored the underlying beliefs that inform these socializing choices, shedding light on the socio-cultural and psychological factors affecting adherence to this age-old practice. Data were collected from twelve participants through in-depth interviews and analyzed thematically using a descriptive-analytical approach. The findings indicate that participants often feel immune to COVID-19, attributing this immunity to self-administered hydroxychloroquine and asserting divine, geographic (hot temperature), and demographic (being young) protection. Many also perceive the virus as similar to malaria and not considered severe.  The implications of these findings for research and policy are discussed.

Abstract

This study explores two primary themes: the Qawaid al-Iman fi Bayan al-Iman manuscript by Sheikh Tengku H. Muhammad bin Alim, and the narrative of Sayyidina Ali's interrogation by the Khawarij, as presented in this manuscript. Employing a qualitative research methodology, the study aims to examine these issues in depth, utilizing a philological approach to analyze the text. The research adopts a descriptive framework to detail the manuscript's characteristics, with an emphasis on the systematic steps of philological analysis, including text identification, manuscript cataloging, description, comparative study, transliteration, and translation. The findings indicate that the manuscript titled Qawaid al-Imani fi Bayan al-Iman (The Principles of Faith: An Exposition of the Pillars of Belief) was authored by Sheikh Tengku H. Muhammad bin Alim during his Islamic missionary work in Muara Jernih Village between 1970 and 1980, with the work completed five years prior to his death. The manuscript spans 127 pages and is written in Malay Arabic. In addition, the study explores the episode in which Sayyidina Ali is questioned by the Khawarij. His responses, characterized by his profound knowledge and rhetorical skill, successfully persuade the Khawarij to reconsider their stance and ultimately return to the fold of Islam.

Abstract

The conflict of Ahmadiyya Lombok has advanced significantly since the 1980s when the fatwa of MUI (the Indonesian Ulama Council) was issued. Ahmadiyya Lombok refugees who migrated to the Transito Dormitory faced discrimination and negative stigma, as well as problems acquiring their citizenship rights, including freedom of worship based on their beliefs and limited access to public services. This study aims to answer several critical concerns, including how Ahmadiyya residents have gained access to public services since taking refuge at the Mataram Transito Dormitory, the negative stigmas they have faced, and the deviant assessments they have received. This study employs a qualitative research method using in-depth interviews with the Ahmadiyya Congregation residing at the Transito Dormitory and observations of the Transito Dormitory. The findings reveal that the Ahmadiyah Congregation faced discrimination while residing at the Transito Dormitory, characterized by limited access to public services, negative stigma stemming from heretical fatwa, and perceptions of exclusivity due to their resistance to local community preferences.

Abstract

This paper examines the intricate dynamics of historical interactions between indigenous citizens and Chinese descendants in Indonesia, focusing on the economic and political dimensions of these relationships. It specifically investigates the significant contributions of KH. Abdurrahman Wahid, known as Gus Dur, in advocating for the rights of Indonesian Chinese citizens through the lenses of humanity and pluralism. Utilizing a qualitative methodology, primarily based on library research, the study reveals that during the New Order, discriminatory policies—most notably Presidential Instruction Number 14 of 1967 issued by President Soeharto—imposed severe restrictions on the cultural and religious practices of Chinese Indonesians. In contrast, Gus Dur emerged as a key proponent of democracy, justice, and human rights, championing freedom of expression and the right to worship according to individual beliefs. His pluralistic and humanitarian perspective played a vital role in defending the rights of Chinese descendants in Indonesia. Ultimately, this study underscores the significance of Gus Dur's legacy in the ongoing struggle for equality and human rights within the context of Indonesia's diverse population.
