Abstract

Language has long been considered as a territory dominated by women. For example, in the area of interpretation/translation it can be seen that there are more women than men 3 to 1, and when talking about language teaching, there are more female instructors than men. So the question is: are women better at learning languages and acquiring languages than men? This research was conducted on students of the Arabic Language Study Program of IAIN Bukittinggi. Gender studies related to second language acquisition are linked to developments in two different subfields, namely: second language acquisition studies on one side and language and gender studies on the other. This research is a qualitative descriptive study and uses a performance analysis approach. The results of this study indicate that there are differences in the mastery of syntax and writing of Arabic words and letters between students and female students and there is a gender effect in acquiring and mastering Arabic as a second language.

Abstract

This study departs from a compilation of women-themed hadiths that were interpreted progresively by Faqihuddin in his book “60 Hadis Hak-Hak Perempuan Dalam Islam:Teks dan Interpretasi”. Another starting used to study this topic is because women-themed hadiths tend to affrim men’s superiority over women. Of the sixty hadith that have been interpreted, the researcher only chose a few hadiths, which are categorized in four major themes; the principle of male and female relations, women’s dignity, women’s choices and rights, and the relations of husband and wife. This study tries to learn and analyze how Faqihuddin applies the theory of qira’ah mubadalah (reading reciprocally) to these selected hadiths. The approach of this study are conceptual approach and content analysis approach. This study finds that qira’ah mubadalah is a progressive interpretation theory that relies on two things, the universal value of Islam and the substantial understanding of a text. Dialecting both things will be able to produce interpretations that carry the value of equality holistically. In the application level, Faqihuddin has internalized Islamic universalism in facilitating the substance of the text. When interpreting the hadith, Faqihuddin uses three types of interpretation; grammatical interpretation, historical interpretation and sociological interpretation. The first two types of interpretations are used to find the main text; the ground idea of the text. Meanwhile, sociological interpretations are used to reduce main thoughts and expand the meaning egalitarian.

Abstract

A number of novel remaja, which mean young adult novels, written by women writers from Indonesia and Malaysia have been published. Writing competitions held by book publishers and language centers have also encouraged the production of the novels. However, since they address youth as their readers and tend to consider the characters, issues, language, and values that appeal to the modern young adult; therefore, some critics say that the novels only respond to the demands of the reader market and they are less creative and lack of quality. In this paper I demonstrate the value of Indonesian and Malaysian novel remaja by examining four novels which are Siti Zaleha M. Hashim’s Biarkan Kupu-Kupu Terbang (“Let the Butterfly Fly”), Rumah Cinta Kelana (“The Love House of Kelana”), written by Sofie Dewayani, Nisah Haron’s Mencari Locus Standi (“Finding the Defense Locus”), and Jadilah Purnamaku Ning written by Khilma Anis. I argue that those novels do not only explore young adults’ feelings, including romance, fear, sadness, happiness, and challenges, but they also describe important themes which may inspire young readers, such as how young Muslim women deal with their identity formation, living in a single mother family, and polygamy.

Abstract

This research examines the phenomenon of gender-based violence in online media, particularly as it emerges through the practice of oversharing among Generation Z on the Instagram platform. The problem addressed is the increasing cases of gender-based violence rooted in the excessive disclosure of personal information in digital spaces. The novelty of this study lies in its focus on Generation Z’s oversharing behavior as a factor that triggers vulnerability to gender-based violence in online media. This study employs a qualitative method with a case study approach and in-depth interviews with both male and female informants who are active Instagram users. The findings reveal that oversharing behavior not only increases the risks of harassment, bullying, and exploitation but also introduces new dynamics in Generation Z’s digital interaction patterns. The discussion emphasizes the need for digital literacy, privacy awareness, and more adaptive user protection policies to mitigate the potential for gender-based violence in online media. Thus, this study contributes to the field of digital communication and gender studies in Indonesia.

Abstract

In Nagari Padang Laweh, a dowry in the form of a burial shroud (kain kafan) is determined by customary law. This provision applies to every woman who marries, whether a maiden or a widow. The tradition aims to promote social equality and prevent jealousy among community members. However, from the perspective of Islamic law, women are granted the right to determine their own dowry as a form of respect, appreciation, and protection, as emphasized in Qur’an Surah An-Nisa (4):4. This study aims to analyze the social and legal meanings of the dowry tradition involving a burial shroud in Nagari Padang Laweh, and to examine its compatibility with the principles of dowry (mahr) in Islamic law. The research employs a qualitative approach with normative-descriptive analysis. Data were collected through interviews with customary leaders, religious scholars, and married couples, as well as a review of classical Islamic jurisprudence literature. The findings reveal that although the dowry tradition in the form of a burial shroud is intended to promote social equality, it effectively nullifies women’s rights and neglects their protection, even appearing discriminatory. In Islamic law, the dowry is prescribed as something possessing economic value and utility, symbolizing honor and recognition of a woman, and she is granted the right to determine its form. Therefore, the dowry tradition involving a burial shroud is categorized as an ‘urf fasid (corrupt custom) because it contradicts the objectives of Islamic law  in upholding the rights and dignity of women within marriage.

Abstract

The contestation of sexual violence discourse within State Islamic Higher Education Institutions (PTKIN) in Indonesia reflects tensions between gender equality, religious values, and institutional authority. This study aims to examine how sexual violence discourse is contested within PTKIN and how gendered power relations, religious values, and institutional interests shape communication practices surrounding prevention and response mechanisms. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the research draws on data collected through interviews, observations, and analyses of online news and institutional documents. The findings reveal three interconnected forms of discourse contestation: the operation of gendered power relations in defining sexual violence, communicative silencing that constrains victims’ voices and reporting practices, and competing narratives surrounding prevention and response mechanisms. These contestations demonstrate that sexual violence is not merely a legal or ethical issue but also a communicative and ideological arena in which progressive and conservative interpretations of gender, religion, and institutional responsibility compete for legitimacy. The study contributes to communication scholarship by conceptualizing sexual violence discourse as a site where gendered power relations, religious authority, and organizational interests intersect and shape institutional responses. Its novelty lies in offering a contextual understanding of discourse formation within Islamic higher education, thereby extending gender communication studies beyond conventional legal and policy-centered approaches.

Abstract

This study examines the concept of the “mosque for women” to explore women’s participation in mosques from the early Islamic period to the present and to assess how women-friendly mosque initiatives contribute to women’s empowerment. It addresses two research questions: (1) how has women’s participation in mosques evolved over time, and (2) how do contemporary women-friendly mosques support women’s empowerment and inclusive community development? The study draws on Islamic perspectives on gender relations, women’s empowerment theory, and the framework of maqāṣid al-sharīʿah. Using a qualitative approach, the research combines historical analysis, literature review, and comparative case studies of women-led and women-friendly mosques in different national contexts. Data were collected through participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and secondary document analysis conducted between 2020 and 2024, with the Grand Mosque of Istiqlal in Jakarta serving as the primary case study. The findings indicate that mosques in early Islam functioned as inclusive spaces that enabled women’s participation in religious, educational, and social activities. Contemporary women-friendly mosque initiatives, particularly at Istiqlal Mosque. This study contributes to the literature on faith-based development by demonstrating how women-friendly mosques can foster gender-inclusive participation, social inclusion, and women’s empowerment within Muslim communities.

Abstract

The study explores about the representation of female alienation in Swallow (2019) by Carlo Mirabella-Davis using Alison M. Jaggar’s (1983) socialist feminist framework. Previous studies on the film mainly focus on psychological trauma and bodily autonomy, while limited research analyses female alienaton from Jaggar’s feminist perspective. This study used qualitative descriptive methods with feminist film analysis. The data consisted of 11 key scenes that show power relations in the domestic and social spheres, analyzed based on Jaggar’s two concepts of alienation, Motherhood and Intellectual Agency. The data were collected by watching the film repeatedly, transcribing relevant dialogues, and identifying scenes that show forms of alienation. The data were then interpreted through narrative characterization analysis and social context analysis. The findings show that Swallow (2019) represents motherhood alienation through control over the main character’s body and pregnancy as part of family expectations and demands. Meanwhile, from the perspective of intellectual agency, female alienation is seen in the silencing of the main character’s voice and the neglect of her decisions in both personal and social settings. This study contributes to feminist film analysis by showing how gender inequality is constructed and normalized in visual representation.

Abstract

Contemporary hadith studies face persistent challenges related to the use of certain hadiths that are frequently interpreted and mobilized in gender-biased ways within Islamic discourse. Such interpretations not only shape gender relations in Muslim societies but also reinforce social inequality through the normative and ahistorical legitimation of religious texts. This article critically examines Fatima Mernissi’s historical-critical methodology toward so-called misogynistic hadiths and analyzes its implications for contemporary hadith studies. Employing qualitative library research, this study draws primarily on Mernissi’s Women and Islam: An Historical and Theological Inquiry, supported by classical hadith literature and recent scholarship on hadith methodology and Islamic gender studies. The article argues that Mernissi should not be understood as a rejecter of hadith, but rather as a critical examiner of their historical authority, transmission contexts, and socio-political functions. By integrating isnād criticism, socio-historical analysis, and an examination of power relations in the construction of hadith authority, Mernissi’s approach contributes to a more contextual and gender-sensitive reading of hadith. At the same time, this article demonstrates that her methodology remains in tension with classical hadith epistemology, particularly regarding the limits of historical contextualization. The study concludes that engaging critically with Mernissi’s approach offers an important methodological dialogue that enriches contemporary hadith studies without undermining the normative authority of the Sunnah.
