Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is a disease caused by dengue virus infection, characterized by hemorrhagic symptoms that may lead to shock and death. One of the causes of dengue outbreaks is poor environmental sanitation. Environmental sanitation factors play an important role in the spread of DHF. The purpose of this study is to analyze the physical environmental sanitation of households with a history of DHF in the working area of Bentiring Public Health Center, Bengkulu City, which includes the physical condition of the house (screened ventilation, lighting, temperature, and humidity), water storage conditions, and waste disposal systemsMethod: The research method used was a descriptive approach, providing detailed descriptions. Based on observations, most houses did not meet proper environmental sanitation standards to prevent the breeding of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. Results: All houses had ventilation, but only 12.5% were equipped with protective screens. A total of 62.5% of houses had lighting below the standard (less than 60 lux). In terms of temperature, 75% of houses had ideal conditions, ranging from 18°C to 30°C. Air humidity in 62.5% of houses did not meet the standard as it was above 60%. In addition, water storage conditions and waste disposal systems were also categorized as poor, reaching 100%. It is recommended that the community increase awareness of the importance of maintaining a healthy home environment, such as installing wire screens on ventilation, ensuring proper lighting, temperature, and humidity, as well as regularly practicing the 3M Plus program. Furthermore, waste disposal should be carried out properly and regularly. The government and health workers are also advised to continuously provide education and conduct regular sanitation monitoring in dengue-prone areas

Abstract

Mosquito-borne diseases remain a public health problem that requires vector control efforts through mosquito nest eradication (PSN). Knowledge is one of the factors suspected to play a role in shaping community behavior in implementing PSN. This study aims to analyze the relationship between knowledge levels and mosquito nest eradication behavior among housewives in the coastal area of Hila Village, Central Maluku Regency. This study used an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The study population was all 30 housewives and all samples were taken using a total sampling technique. Data were collected using a questionnaire and analyzed univariately and bivariately using the Chi-Square test at a 95% confidence level (α = 0.05). The results showed that the majority of respondents had poor knowledge (40.0%) and poor mosquito nest eradication behavior (50.0%). Respondents with good knowledge tended to have good mosquito nest eradication behavior (72.2%), while respondents with poor knowledge tended to have poor behavior (83.3%). The chi-square test results showed a χ² value of 8.889 with p = 0.003, indicating a significant relationship between knowledge level and mosquito nest eradication behavior. This finding suggests that increased knowledge has the potential to encourage better mosquito nest eradication behavior. Therefore, increased health promotion and community education activities are needed on an ongoing basis to support vector-based disease control in coastal areas.

Abstract

Temporary Waste Storage Sites (TPS) are potential breeding grounds for house flies (Musca domestica) due to the accumulation of organic waste and inadequate sanitation conditions. High fly density may increase environmental health risks because flies act as mechanical vectors of various pathogenic microorganisms. This study aimed to analyze fly density and microclimatic conditions, including temperature and humidity, at TPS locations in Samarinda City. A quantitative analytical study with a cross-sectional design was conducted in March 2026 at eight active TPS locations selected purposively. Fly density was measured using the fly grill method according to the Indonesian Ministry of Health guidelines, while temperature and humidity were recorded using a hygrometer. The results showed that the average fly density index ranged from 7.8 to 40.2 flies per fly grill, indicating high to very high density levels at all observation sites. The highest density was observed at TPS Gang Ayu (40.2 flies/fly grill), while the lowest was found at TPS Kontainer Statis Air Putih (7.8 flies/fly grill). Environmental conditions showed temperatures ranging from 27.8°C to 35.9°C and humidity levels between 48% and 70%, which are favorable for fly survival and reproduction. However, fly density variations were not solely influenced by microclimatic factors but were also associated with waste volume, waste accumulation duration, transportation frequency, and sanitation conditions. In conclusion, fly density at TPS in Samarinda City remains high and poses potential environmental health risks. Improved waste management, routine sanitation measures, and continuous fly density monitoring are recommended to reduce vector populations and minimize disease transmission risks.

Abstract

Safe urban water supply is influenced by water facility conditions, local geohydrological characteristics, and spatial variation in physicochemical parameters. This study evaluated the spatial quality of clean water facilities in Bengkulu City using field data from 130 observation points consisting of bore wells, dug wells, piped water or PDAM connections, and other community water sources. The study applied a descriptive quantitative approach supported by spatial interpretation. Physical parameters included turbidity indication, odor, taste, and color, while chemical and supporting parameters included Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), pH, temperature, coordinates, and elevation. Data were cleaned, normalized, classified, and assessed using a blackbox rule-based compliance test referring to operational criteria derived from Indonesian clean water quality standards. The results showed that most samples had acceptable organoleptic characteristics, with 122 points not turbid, 129 odorless, 125 tasteless, and 128 colorless. TDS complied at 116 points (89.2%), whereas pH showed the weakest compliance, with only 69 points (53.1%) within the 6.5-8.5 range. Spatial screening identified 63 points as low priority, 47 as moderate priority requiring verification, and 20 as high priority requiring intervention. The findings indicate that basic water quality in Bengkulu City is generally acceptable for several field indicators, but acidity and several spatially clustered risks require further verification, laboratory testing, and location-specific water sanitation management.

Abstract

The Free Nutritious Meal Program (MBG) is a strategic government program for fulfilling the nutritional needs of students through the provision of safe and suitable food. The success of this program is strongly influenced by food safety management, particularly the duration of food storage from the time it is cooked until it is consumed. Food stored for too long at room temperature, within the danger zone of 5–60°C, allows pathogenic bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella sp., Escherichia coli, and Bacillus cereus to multiply rapidly, thereby increasing the risk of food poisoning. Several mass poisoning incidents during MBG implementation in various regions of Indonesia indicate that sanitation control and food handling remain serious concerns. This study aimed to analyze the duration of food storage, the sanitation of storage areas, food handling practices, food container conditions, and the risk of food poisoning in the MBG Program at SPPG Cahaya Negeri and SMPN 07 Seluma, Bengkulu Province. This descriptive study used a direct observation method with a checklist sheet over 10 days in April 2026. The observed variables included food storage duration, storage sanitation, food handling practices, container conditions, and food poisoning risk, observed from the time food was cooked at the SPPG until it was received and consumed by students. Data were analyzed univariately to describe the frequency distribution of each variable. The results showed that food storage duration was mostly in the moderately risky category (50%), storage sanitation was mostly good (90%), food handling practices were mostly non-compliant with standards (70%), food containers were mostly suitable (70%), and the overall food poisoning risk was mostly low (80%). Food storage duration that exceeds the safe limit, combined with non-compliant handling practices, has the potential to increase the risk of food poisoning, although good sanitation and suitable containers help to suppress this risk. Accelerating food distribution, improving food handling hygiene, and conducting regular monitoring of containers and sanitation are necessary to ensure food safety in the MBG Program.
