MANDARINABLE: Journal of Chinese Studies

MANDARINABLE: Journal of Chinese Studies is a bi-annual journal, published in April and October. MANDARINABLE focuses on various issues spanning the Chinese Studies of language, literature, culture, and journalism. The coverage of language includes linguistics and language teaching, the area of culture includes cultural studies and social studies, and the scope of literature covers the analysis of novels, films, poems,s and dramas using the relevant theories and concepts. The journalism coverage includes digital journalism, social media, news production and consumption, journalism culture, and performance. In its first edition, MANDARINABLE was published online and printed. In each edition, MANDARINABLE has received an article openly. The article will be reviewed by internal and external editors, with at least two reviewers who have related expertise with double-blind peer review.

Abstract

The study of China in Indonesia has never ceased; the study itself is always fascinating. China is unique both in terms of language and culture. The title 'The Role of Confucius in the Development of China Today' was chosen to examine and understand how China has developed itself through the influence of Confucius. To realise the Chinese dream, China's traditional cultural heritage is a fundamental force that cannot be ignored. The values of Confucius have been the basic norms of Chinese society for a long time, although they were restricted and banned during the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) as a result of the movement to abolish old values, and have now been revitalised, in parallel with the establishment of Confucius Institutes in many countries around the world.

Abstract

This research is entitled Representation of Chinese Culture in Wish Dragon Movie. Using semiotic analysis according to Roland Barthes. Semiotic analysis is used to analyze the signs that represent culture in the film Wish Dragon. This study aims to find the existence of a sign and then find out how Chinese culture is represented through the film Wish Dragon Movie by examining the meaning of denotation, connotation and myth according to Roland Barthes' semiotic model. In addition to finding out how the foreign audience acceptance to the Wish Dragon film and how the foreign audience understands the Chinese culture in this film, the researcher using audience comments in the most popular rated movies website to analyze.

Abstract

In most movies, the "imaginary audience" is already hidden in the structure at the beginning of the creation, and the acceptance of the audience means the finalization of the movie art. The overall purpose of this paper is to explore the audience's acceptance of the cross-cultural movie Everything Everywhere All at Once based on cultural adaptation theory and communication adaptation theory. We have to cautiously reflect on whether the ecology of the movie market is undergoing restructuring nowadays, and whether the audience's receptive psychology is changing. Is there a change in the audience's receptive psychology? How can social, psychological, and cultural issues be properly internalized into the core expression of a film? This study collects more than 200,000 words of textual materials from mainstream media channels such as Douban.com, B-station, and Time.com for qualitative research, and utilizes the rooted theory approach to explore the psychological behavioral mechanism of audience's acceptance of cross-cultural films represented by Everything Everywhere All at Once and to construct a theoretical model of the psychology of acceptance in a cross-cultural context. It is found that cultural adaptation and communication adaptation theories have once again emphasized their complex structure and new discourse field in the new cross-cultural movie reception situation. This study expands the applicability of these two theories in the new socio-cultural context of China.

Abstract

The rapid rise of LinaBell has been a carnival driven by online user participation. It not only reflects the active agency and creative initiative of audiences in participatory culture but also advances the development of participatory texts, transforming the relationship between producers and recipients from opposition to collaboration. Throughout this process, both parties benefit and fulfill their respective needs. Creators generate higher commercial value with lower production costs, while recipients experience immersive and interactive aesthetic enjoyment through their engagement. The success of LinaBell popularity is also related to the unique form of fan culture in China. Furthermore, it ingeniously addresses the long-standing copyright issues that have hindered user participation in creative processes. However, it is important to acknowledge that this type of storyless intellectual property (IP) has both advantages and limitations.

Abstract

Black Myth-Wukong is an electronic game adapted from the Chinese novel Journey to the West. The game exhibits distinct cross-cultural characteristics in its dissemination process. We believe that individual schema differences can influence users’ cross-cultural acceptance behaviors. Utilizing comment data collected from the internet, we conducted a programmatic grounded approach to study and process the data. Our research revealed that users’ schema differences can lead to individuals developing different cultural psychologies, including cultural identification, cultural resonance, and so on. These cultural psychologies may ultimately impact the cross-cultural dissemination of artistic works.

Abstract

At present, Chinese teaching as a second language is becoming more and more famous, especially in countries along the One Belt One Road. As part of the One Belt One Road, Indonesia and Malaysia are no exception. Indonesia and Malaysia are neighboring countries in Southeast Asia. The purpose of this study is to compare educational research, using Bereday's "Four Step Approach to Comparative Education Research" methodology, and using various literature to conduct literature research as support for the research. Research has shown that the development of Chinese language teaching in Indonesia is slightly slower than that in Malaysia, which is influenced by these three factors, learning content, government policies, and history.

Abstract

The Diploma Mandarin Language Study Program at UNS transitioned to online learning as an alternative to face-to-face instruction following the COVID-19 pandemic. Foreign language learning, including Mandarin Chinese, typically involves native speakers as instructors. However, online learning with native speakers can inadvertently result in student anxiety. To address this issue, the program collaborated with the UNS Confucius Institute to bring native lecturers onboard. Nevertheless, certain native lecturers encountered visa-related challenges that prevented them from teaching in a face-to-face setting. Inspired by the post-COVID online learning landscape, the Study Program formulated a policy to continue certain Chinese language courses online.This study aims to analyze the impact of online Chinese language learning with native lecturers on the levels of anxiety among Diploma Mandarin Language students. A quantitative approach was employed, utilizing a case study design and data collection techniques, including observation and questionnaires. The research seeks to contribute theoretically by addressing the gaps in the literature related to student anxiety during online Mandarin learning with native speakers. The study involved 30 randomly selected students from the Diploma Mandarin Language classes of 2021 and 2022 at UNS. The results of this study indicated that 73.33% of the respondents experienced anxiety while participating in online learning with native instructors. The types of anxiety included reduced learning conditions, diminished self-efficacy, and decreased learning effectiveness.

Abstract

This article uses test papers from students at Ho Chi Minh University of Banking (HUB) in Vietnam as the interlanguage corpus. According to the "Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education" (New Standads), we find out the grammatical items in which learners make errors and count their error rates, compared with Vietnamese expressions, analyze the cause of the error. The results show that in the band 1 grammar items of the “New Standard”, the proportion of Vietnamese students' errors in the total number of grammar items is relatively low: HSK1 class students have a total of 9 errors, accounting for 18.7% of the total grammar items in the band 1. In HSK2-3 class, Except for demonstrative pronouns, the error rate of these items decreased significantly, with 3 items having zero error rates. At the same time, 2 new error items appeared with the acquisition of new grammar points in this stage. The students in HSK1 class have a high error rate mainly due to the structural auxiliary word "的", the preposition "和" and "跟", the preposition "在" and the adverbial indicating the time. The high error rate among students in HSK2-3 class is mainly reflected in the special sentence structures of "了1、了2. The types of errors are mostly out of sequence or missing components. Therefore, when training Chinese to Vietnamese students, it is necessary to strengthen their expression order of "subject- time- object- location- action", which can solve multiple word order errors. In addition, for the teaching of "tenses", it is necessary to increase the repetition rate of learning materials and repeatedly practice using context, which can greatly improve students' bias situation.

Abstract

China is now one the most important countries in the globe, and with the increasing influence of Chinese language and culture, Chinese education has become more and more important during the last two decades in Africa in general, and in the Republic of Congo in particular. However, we assert the existence a major flaw in the field of Chinese education, mainly the lack of adequate training programs for Chinese teachers. Thus, this study investigates the current situation of local Chinese teacher training in the Republic of the Congo, with to goal to identify the main challenges related to the issue, and to put forward innovative methods to solve these challenges. Lately, Chinese teaching in the Republic of Congo has developed rapidly. Looking into the future, this research outlines the future research direction in the field of Chinese teacher training. It emphasizes the potential long-term impact of intensive training on language education, cultural exchanges and economic opportunities for Congolese students. In addition, it emphasizes the role can be played by government agencies, educational institutions and international organizations in supporting such initiatives.

Abstract

Parasynonym is one of the main challenges in second language acquisition process. Chinese and Indonesian language also had many words which has similar meaning.  In this paper, we focused on the comparative analysis between Indonesian words "Tiba-tiba" and "Mendadak", and chinese words "突然" and "忽然" in the semantic, pragmatic and translation pattern. The study results shows that "突然" and "忽然" have the meaning of "unexpected", while "tiba-tiba","mendadak" means "unthinkable"; all four words can also mean "rapidly happens", but "突然" can also to emphasize "controllability and purpose", "transition" and "to a certain degree" ; "忽然" can only mean "variability" and "methodology"; "Tiba-tiba" can mean "transition", "degree", "methodality"; "mendadak" can mean "degree" and "method" and "Unexpected event". The aforementioned four words basically have a lot in common in terms of pragmatics and structure, but their difference is that "忽然" cannot be used with adverbs of degree, while "突然", "tiba-tiba" and "mendadak" can. Thus its may concluded that when facing parasynonym in second language acquisition process also need special attention in order to achieve better language mastery.
