Abstract

With the promotion of the "Belt and Road" initiative, the importance and urgency of the transition from language teaching to culture teaching in international Chinese language education has become more and more prominent. The purpose of this paper is to explore the application value and practical challenges of Chinese folklore in international Chinese language education. Through reviewing, combing and integrating and analyzing the literature, we point out the role of Chinese folklore in international Chinese language education, as well as its problems and possible solutions in practice, on the basis of the definitions, classifications and characteristics of folklore. It is found that Chinese folklore has unique value in enhancing language skills, spreading Chinese culture, and innovating teaching methods, but in concrete practice, it is necessary to fully examine the cultural taboos among different countries and ethnic groups, develop more targeted teaching materials, and do a good job in teacher training and classroom design.

Abstract

Chinese for E-commerce is an emerging programme of cross-fertilization of language and skills under the concept of ‘Chinese+’. In recent years, some colleges and universities between China and ASEAN countries have carried out cooperation and exchanges on ‘Chinese for Cross-border E-commerce’, which has a huge potential for teaching and learning market demand. Based on the current trend of cooperation, this study finds that the current programme lacks micro teaching design research and has not formed a systematic curriculum system. Therefore, this study follows the principle of ‘practicability’, uses the research method of ‘demand orientation’, and proposes ‘drawing on the experimental teaching method’, ‘constructing Participation, Integration, Creation’ curriculum model, ’Developing a thematic unit teaching programme for e-commerce. ‘The idea suggests to develop a teaching content framework with the theme of e-commerce Chinese language and analyse and sort out its main implementation links. The teaching model fits the real demand of ‘cross-level e-commerce Chinese’ with strong practical applicability, and can provide useful references for micro teaching materials such as syllabus objectives, theme contents and design programmes of the course.

Abstract

The Belt and Road Initiative has brought chances for International Chinese Language Education in the new era and has had a positive impact on the progress of Chinese language education in countries along the route, increasing the demand for “Chinese +” talent training in various fields, such as industry, trade and economy. Due to the different economic and industrial structures and development levels of various countries, the status and degree of dissemination of Chinese also vary, and the demand for “Chinese +” talents in various countries has national characteristics. Therefore, in addition to fully considering the teaching needs and market demand factors, we must also broaden the needs of Indonesian students and cultivate diversified “Chinese +” talents. From the angle of Indonesian students, what are the needs for “Chinese +” talent training in order to address the lack of translation skills in the industrial, trade and business sectors? The article uses questionnaires and interviews to investigate the personal information of Indonesian students, market demand in Indonesia, Chinese teaching conditions, and professional Chinese proficiency requirements, and proposes a talent training model for Indonesian students, aiming to provide a reference for promoting International Chinese Language Education in the Belt and Road Initiative.

Abstract

This paper investigates the representation of the Chinese language in three prominent Indonesian media outlets Kompas, Metro News, and Kumparan by analyzing reports from the period 2020-2023, with “Bahasa Mandarin” (Chinese language) as the primary keyword. The study employs a corpus-assisted discourse analysis methodology, incorporating the conceptual framework of semantic prosody to examine how the international dissemination of the Chinese language is portrayed in Indonesian media. By conducting a two-tier analysis, this research uncovers how the Chinese language is spreading in Indonesia through media discourse, with a particular focus on sentiment analysis based on statistical text analysis and media report corpora. Furthermore, this research sheds light on the broader dynamics of international Chinese language communication, offering insights into the role of the media in shaping public perceptions of the Chinese language. It also contributes to understanding the Chinese language's evolving position and dissemination strategies within Indonesia’s social and cultural landscape.

Abstract

Driven by the “One Belt One Road Initiative”, Malaysia has a huge Chinese tourist market. In cultivating non-native Chinese to provide tourism and hotel services for Chinese tourists, does Malaysian country-specific "Mandarin Textbook: Tourism and Hotel Management for Special Purposes" meet the writing principle of Mandarin as a foreign language? This article evaluates and analyzes this teaching material based on three major principles, namely pertinence, practicality and scientificity. This article basically uses literature research method and comparative method to explore the global country-specific tourism Mandarin textbooks and related research, and compares and discusses with the Malaysian Mandarin Textbook. The findings show that this teaching material demonstrates its practicality: (1) It brings out the phenomenon of multi-racial and multi-cultural Malaysia; (2) It highlights the characteristics of tourist attractions in West and East Malaysia; (3) It shows the unique culture of Malaysia. However, the pertinence of this textbook has shortcomings. Although this textbook includes the role of local tour guide, the text repeatedly arranges the tour guide to travel as a tourist. In addition, the scientificity of this textbook needs to be strengthened. The compilation of the textbooks was mainly based on the writers’ years of teaching experience and reference to China's tourism Chinese textbooks. This article recommends that future textbooks need to be compiled based on learner needs analysis to improve the scientificity of the textbooks. Relevant content and vocabulary should be selected based on related corpora or published vocabulary lists to enhance the practicality of the teaching materials.

Abstract

In the era of information technology transformation, education requires a digital transformation to meet the diverse learning needs of learners and to cultivate their digital competencies. International Chinese Smart Education is a crucial strategic initiative for advancing the digital transformation of education. There is an urgent need to develop effective teaching models to serve as a bridge between the theory of smart education and teaching practice. This study attempts to integrate the concepts of smart education with a Chinese oral language teaching model, leveraging educational technology to support both students' self-directed learning and teachers' instructional activities. A "three-stage, five-step" smart teaching model for oral language was constructed and applied in three rounds of practice. The survey indicates that this model significantly increased the speaking rate and total speaking time in oral classes. The effect of peer collaboration on learning was found to be nearly as effective as teacher-led instruction. There was a noticeable delay effect in the acquisition of written language and complex language structures, and learners' abilities to use interactive and discourse strategies were improved. However, the model also faced challenges in practice, such as increasing the burden on teachers for lesson preparation and widening the gap in skill levels among learners.

Abstract

In modern Chinese, many words are composed of a pair of morphemes with opposite meanings, such as "左右(left and right)", "褒贬(commendatory and derogatory)", which constitutes an important phenomenon in the field of lexicology. Although the number of opposite compounds is limited, the study of their lexicalization process and cognitive mechanism is of great significance for expanding the research results of modern Chinese lexicology. In addition, the application of opposite compounds in teaching, especially in teaching Chinese as a foreign language, poses challenges and needs to be further studied. In this study, the opposite compounds in the Modern Chinese Dictionary (7th edition) were investigated. According to the relationship between word meaning and morpheme meaning, 260 opposite compounds were divided into three categories: "word meaning = morpheme meaning", "word meaning > morpheme meaning" and "word meaning ≠ morpheme meaning". By analyzing word frequency in a corpus, this study explored the correlation between semantic integration and frequency of opposite compounds. The significance of this work lies in enriching the corpus resources for studying antonymic compounds, solving issues related to meaning and morpheme classification, which enhances existing research and deepens its content. Additionally, it provides pedagogical guidance for teaching Chinese as a second language, aiding learners in mastering antonymic compounds more easily.

Abstract

Silk Mandarin (丝合汉语), as a Chinese language teaching organization, exemplifies the growing global interest in Mandarin. By leveraging platforms such as Instagram, Silk Mandarin actively promotes and disseminates Chinese language education internationally through visual media, including images and short videos. This research aims to investigate the role of visual rhetoric in the international dissemination of Mandarin and to analyze the types of content that are most effective in promoting Chinese language education. To achieve this, a comprehensive analysis of visual rhetoric is conducted, employing content analysis and literature review. The findings indicate that the global promotion of Mandarin is primarily facilitated through educational, cultural, and tourism-related content, predominantly conveyed through visually engaging media. Notably, linguistic messages, coded iconographic messages, and uncoded iconographic messages emerge as the primary vehicles for dissemination. Furthermore, Silk Mandarin adeptly utilizes these three forms of visual semiotic messages as integral components of its marketing strategy. This multifaceted approach not only ignites the audience's interest in learning Mandarin but also significantly influences their perceptions, encouraging them to appreciate the allure of China through the lens of an alternative image presented by the medium.
