Abstract

This study examines the utilization of Wordwall as a multisensory instructional tool for teaching English vocabulary to slow learners in inclusive EFL classrooms at the junior high school level. Slow learners often encounter difficulties in vocabulary acquisition due to slower cognitive processing, limited working memory, and challenges in retention. Consequently, instructional approaches must incorporate repetition, explicit explanation, and adaptive strategies aligned with learners’ cognitive characteristics. This research employed a qualitative case study design involving two participants: an English teacher and a shadow teacher experienced in teaching slow learners using Wordwall. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and teacher reflective documents, and analyzed using thematic analysis to identify patterns related to multisensory instruction, pedagogical adaptation, and technology integration. The findings indicate that Wordwall functions as a complementary instructional tool that enhances learners’ motivation, engagement, and participation. Its visual, auditory, and interactive features facilitate vocabulary learning through image-word association, pronunciation support, and repeated exposure. However, vocabulary mastery remains dependent on explicit instruction, scaffolding, and continuous teacher mediation. Teachers assume critical roles as instructional designers, facilitators, motivators, and evaluators, adapting content, pacing, and task complexity to meet learners’ needs.Despite its pedagogical potential, several challenges were identified, including technological constraints, students’ limited digital literacy, the need for differentiated instruction, and concerns regarding assessment validity. Overall, the study concludes that the effectiveness of Wordwall is determined not by its technological features alone but by its integration within adaptive and pedagogically informed instructional practices.

Abstract

The book Critical Approaches to Literature by David Daiches, which has been widely used as a reference by scholars of both Eastern and Western literature, emphasizes the complexity of fully appreciating a literary work. The characteristics of Sejarah Melayu and Hikayat Deli as classical Malay literary works justify their classification as narrative hikayat texts. The aims of this analysis is showing the comprehending as a way to deliver information about an event on a cultural context which is regarding as a specific work perceived as distinct from other literary forms. The research problem concerns the meanings and interpretations of the narrative elements of incitement, authority, enmity, and conflict in Sejarah Melayu and Hikayat Deli as literary works, which are often appreciated merely for their aesthetic language. The approach employed adopts the author’s narrative perspective within the framework of postmodernist thought. The findings indicate that the construction of incitement follows particular patterns directed toward authority, representing a reality of enmity and conflict shaped through narrative imagination.

Abstract

The Indonesian word siap (literally: ready/prepared) functions far beyond its lexical meaning within Indonesian military and semi-military institutional discourse. This study investigates the pragmatic multifunctionality of siap as a discourse marker, speech act response token, and institutional affirmation signal, and examines its diffusion into civilian registers. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach grounded in Speech Act Theory, Pragmatic Markers Theory, and Register Diffusion Theory, this study analyzed a corpus of 240 naturally occurring utterances from three sources: audio-recorded institutional interactions at an Indonesian maritime education institution, digital communication data from social media platforms, and semi-structured interviews with twelve informants. Data were analyzed using Hymes' SPEAKING model. The findings reveal six distinct pragmatic functions of siap in military discourse, with hierarchical compliance marking as the most frequent function (35.4% of the military corpus): (1) hierarchical compliance marker, (2) epistemic acknowledgment token, (3) error-affirmation signal, (4) commissive speech act initiator, (5) phatic rapport marker, and (6) turn-taking regulator. In civilian contexts, siap undergoes pragmatic bleaching, splitting into two sub-functions: a professional affirmative and a casual phatic filler. The diffusion pathway is mediated by social media, military-themed entertainment, service industry adoption, and Indonesia's historical cultural proximity to military institutions.

Abstract

Understanding literature is not as simple as it appears. Each person has their own interpretation of the literary works themselves. The research aims to analyse failed marriages portrayed in Taylor Jenkins Reid's ‘The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo’ and find out what are the factors of the failed marriage in the novel, how the failed marriage is portrayed in the novel and how the characters deal with the failed marriage in the novel. The researcher used descriptive qualitative research, and the data were formed by words and sentences from The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo novel. The research revealed that the factors of failed marriage are career development, infidelity, expectation gap, and selfishness. Meanwhile, the failed marriage is portrayed using a first-person point of view with two narrators switching back and forth; also, the characters deal with the failed marriage by having a conflict with him/herself, the environment, and another person. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo depicts Evelyn’s struggle to conceal her true self while striving to become a celebrity and shape the public’s perception of her. To love forward in her career, Evelyn develops increasingly complicated lies and deceptions throughout her marriages.

Abstract

This study examines the role of sequential picture media in improving short story writing skills of fourth-grade elementary school students at SD Negeri 028 Penajam through a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through direct observation and in-depth interviews with the class teacher and selected students. Analysis employed Miles & Huberman's interactive model through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, with validity ensured through source and method triangulation. Findings indicate that: (1) conventional writing instruction lacked adequate visual support, creating barriers to student creativity; (2) sequential picture media effectively served as an imagination trigger by providing concrete starting points for story development; (3) the media significantly improved writing quality in terms of story structure, descriptive vocabulary, paragraph coherence, and character development; and (4) it strongly enhanced and sustained student learning motivation. The study recommends systematic, contextual, and high-quality development of sequential picture media as an integral component of Indonesian language learning strategies in elementary schools.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of skimming and scanning techniques in enhancing students' reading comprehension and reading efficiency in the English literacy subtest of Ujian Tulis Berbasis Komputer (UTBK). The study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test. The participants consisted of 30 Grade 12 students enrolled in a private tutoring institution. The instrument used was a UTBK style reading comprehension test consisting of 20 multiple-choice questions completed within 20 minutes. The results revealed a significant improvement in students' reading performance, with the mean score increasing from 11.13 in the pre-test to 16.03 in the post-test. The paired sample t-test indicated a statistically significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores (t=18.42, p <0.001). In addition, students demonstrated improved reading efficiency as reflected in reduced completion time and increased accuracy. These findings suggest that skimming and scanning techniques are effective in promoting strategic reading behaviour, enabling students to process texts more efficiently under time constraints. The study highlights the importance of integrating strategy-based instruction in preparing students for high-stakes English literacy assessments.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyse the types of humour shifts found in the Indonesian dubbing of the SpongeBob SquarePants cartoon. In this study, the author uses a descriptive qualitative method, drawing on data from 5 episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants. This study focuses on the translation of audiovisual theory. The findings of this study indicate that the translation of humour in audiovisual media is influenced by several factors, including linguistic differences, cultural references, and technical aspects such as timing and synchronization. In some cases, humour based on wordplay or phonetics cannot be produced directly in Indonesian, resulting in the loss of some humour analysis. However, the translation applies adaptive strategies to recreate the humour effect in the target language. Further analysis reveals that literal translation remains the dominant strategy in the Indonesian version. Thus, the translation of humour in the English-Indonesian dubbing of SpongeBob SquarePants involves various forms of translation shifts, as the translator balances linguistic constraints with the need to produce clear and contextual dialogue in the literary language.

Abstract

The pedagogical transformation of English language teaching in the digital era is characterized by the utilization of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR). This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Speechace application in enhancing students' speaking competence at Mr.Bob English Course through a quasi-experimental design. A total of 33 respondents were involved and divided into experimental and control groups to measure their pronunciation accuracy and fluency levels. Data collection instruments included oral performance tests (pre-test and post-test) and a learner autonomy questionnaire. The results of the Independent Samples T-test analysis showed a significant difference in mean scores between the two groups (t = 3.88; p < .001), with the experimental group demonstrating superior performance. These findings confirm that AI-based tools are capable of providing an autonomous and effective practice environment, while simultaneously serving as a solution to the limitations of personalized feedback within the context of EFL learning in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the difficulties experienced by eighth-grade students in writing recount texts at SMP Nasrani 5 Medan. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method to obtain an in-depth understanding of students’ writing problems. The subjects of this study were eighth-grade students. The data were collected through writing tests and interviews. In the data collection process, students were first given an explanation of recount texts and their generic structure. Then, they were asked to write a recount text based on a selected topic within a limited time. The findings revealed that students encountered several difficulties in writing recount texts. These difficulties were mainly related to limited vocabulary, lack of grammatical mastery (including sentence structure, use of nouns and verbs), and insufficient understanding of the characteristics and organization of recount texts. In addition, some students had difficulty generating ideas and organizing them coherently. These problems affected the overall quality of their writing. Based on these findings, it is suggested that teachers apply more effective, structured, and engaging teaching strategies to improve students’ writing skills, particularly in composing recount texts.
