Abstract

This paper explores Roblox as a significant phenomenon within contemporary popular culture, focusing on its widespread influence among Generation Z and Alpha. Roblox is not merely a gaming platform but an expansive digital ecosystem that integrates creativity, social interaction, and economic activity. The study discusses four main factors that illustrate Roblox's role in popular culture: addiction and its cognitive consequences often described as ‘brainrot’, the rise of digital consumerism fueled by the Robux virtual currency, the emergence of cyberculture through customizable avatars that sometimes exhibit inappropriate content, and Roblox's function as a "third place" replacement for offline social spaces. By analyzing these factors, the paper reveals the complex socio- cultural dynamics of Roblox and underscores the urgency of critical digital literacy, content regulation, and balanced digital engagement. This research contributes to understanding how digital platforms redefine cultural participation and social interaction in the digital age.

Abstract

This article delves into the exploration of Evaluative Language Theory particularly the concept of Engagement as positioning resource within the discourse of Malay newspaper. Two types of newspapers were used in this study: Berita Harian/Berita Minggu Singapura (BH/BM S’pura) and Berita Harian/Berita Ahad Malaysia (BH/BA M’sia). Only commentary articles were selected as study materials, ensuring they were related to the bombing of the World Trade Center in New York that occurred on September 11, 2001. This study is limited to articles with such themes due to their similar context. The study explores the strategies employed by newspapers through their commentators to influence readers, enabling the newspapers to instill the propositions they aim to advance within the readers. This description is based on analytical findings regarding Engagement in Malay newspaper discourse contained within the texts. The study is grounded in Systemic-Functional Linguistics as a linguistic framework for examining the Engagement system present in Malay language newspaper discourse. Engagement consists of types such as monogloss and heterogloss. The concept of Evaluative Language in Malay newspaper discourse can be explained by outlining these types of Engagement.

Abstract

One persistent challenge in English language teaching (ELT) at senior high schools in Karo Regency, Indonesia, is teachers’ limited access to and familiarity with communicative teaching methods. Professional training that provides teachers with communicative methodologies constitutes a viable strategy to tackle this challenge. This study aims to examine the advantages of implementing Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) in English instruction at the senior high school level in Karo Regency. Using a descriptive research design, the study involved English teachers who had previously received training in the CLT method. Data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews and analyzed descriptively. The findings reveal five major advantages of CLT implementation: (1) increased classroom interaction, (2) reduced student boredom, (3) decreased speaking-related shyness, (4) a more enjoyable and engaging learning atmosphere, and (5) improved speaking fluency. These results indicate that CLT effectively supports teachers in achieving the primary objective of ELT, namely the development of students’ communicative competence. The research points out the need for continuous professional development in communicative methodologies to enhance the quality of English language instruction in regional educational contexts.

Abstract

This study investigates the evaluative language used by Donald Trump in his speech concerning Harvard University’s treatment of foreign students, employing the Attitude system from Appraisal Theory. Focusing on three subsystems such as Affect, Judgement, and Appreciation. This study analyzes how Trump constructs his political persona, positions ideological others, and frames educational policy within nationalist discourse. The data were drawn from transcribed segments of a publicly available speech and analyzed qualitatively using Appraisal Theory as the primary analytical framework. The findings reveal that Judgement was the most dominant Attitude type (44.29%), followed by Appreciation (35.71%) and Affect (20%). Most evaluations (58.57%) were directed toward others (especially institutions and political actors), while the remaining 41.43% targeted the speaker himself. The overall evaluative polarity was predominantly negative (61.43%), with positive evaluations accounting for 38.57% of the data. Trump frequently praised his own leadership capacity while expressing dissatisfaction or moral condemnation toward elite institutions. Notably, this study highlights a rarely examined theme in Trump’s discourse: education policy. By framing foreign students as victims and elite universities as ideologically flawed, Trump repositions the education sector as a site of political contestation. This study contributes to the growing body of literature on political discourse by extending Appraisal analysis into the educational domain, revealing how evaluative meanings shape public narratives beyond traditional themes like war and immigration.

Abstract

This study investigates the types and functions of phrasal verbs in five selected articles from The Jakarta Post, published between August and December 2024. A qualitative descriptive approach was applied, following Miles and Huberman’s interactive model of analysis: data collection, data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The theoretical framework combines Michael Lewis’s Lexical Approach (1993) with classifications of phrasal verbs into transitive, intransitive, separable, inseparable, literal, and figurative categories. Data were drawn from online newspaper articles, while secondary data consisted of books, journals, and prior studies on phrasal verbs. The findings reveal a dominance of figurative and inseparable phrasal verbs across all articles, highlighting their vital role in journalistic discourse. These verbs simplify complex issues, enhance stylistic impact, and make articles accessible to general readers. The study suggests pedagogical implications for English language teaching, particularly in integrating phrasal verbs into classroom instruction, and calls for further research on phrasal verb usage in broader journalistic and literary contexts.
