Abstract

The underutilization of banana peels, which are often regarded as agricultural waste, serves as the basis for this study, given their actual potential as a natural biopolymer source rich in cellulose, hemicellulose, pectin, lignin, and protein. This research aims to explore the potential use of banana peel waste as a raw material for pectin production, with the dual objective of mitigating environmental problems and promoting the development of value-added materials. The method employed involved pectin extraction from banana peel powder using hydrochloric acid (HCl). The results indicated that the extracted pectin constituted 3.96% of the banana peel powder by weight and demonstrated gelling ability. The extracted pectin had an equivalent weight of 4166.66 mg, a methoxyl content of 6.94% classified as low methoxyl pectin (LMP), a degree of esterification of 90.26%, categorizing it as high ester pectin, and a galacturonic acid content of 43.65%. According to the quality parameters established by the International Pectin Producers Association (IPPA), the extracted pectin was of reasonably high purity. These findings suggest that banana peels have significant potential as an environmentally friendly and industrially applicable alternative source of pectin.

Abstract

Contamination by heavy metal ions such as Cu²⁺ in water sources poses a serious environmental issue due to their toxic effects on living organisms. This study aims to evaluate the adsorption kinetics of Cu²⁺ ions using silica xerogel synthesized from fly ash. The synthesis was carried out via the sol-gel method, and material characterization was performed using X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) to determine the silica content. The adsorption process was conducted in batch mode with contact time variations of 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, and 180 minutes. Analysis results showed that the fly ash contained 54.167% silica, and the optimal adsorption capacity was achieved at 150 minutes with a value of 44.982 mg/g. The adsorption kinetics were best described by the pseudo-second-order model, indicated by a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.99947, suggesting that the adsorption process follows a chemisorption mechanism. These findings imply that silica xerogel derived from fly ash has significant potential as an effective adsorbent for environmental remediation of Cu²⁺ ion contamination.

Abstract

Concerns arising from the use of synthetic antiseptics in hand sanitizer products have driven efforts to explore safer and more environmentally friendly natural alternatives. This study aims to develop a hand sanitizer spray based on basil leaf extract (Ocimum basilicum) and to evaluate its phytochemical composition, organoleptic properties, pH, homogeneity, and antiseptic efficacy. Three formulations were developed: a control without basil extract (F0), 5% extract (F1), and 10% extract (F2). Basil leaf extract contains flavonoids, tannins, and saponins, which exhibit antibacterial activity, while aloe vera and lime were added as moisturizers, natural fragrances, and supplementary antibacterial agents. Test results showed that all formulations had a pH of 4, conforming to SNI 06-2588 standards, were physically stable with homogeneous mixing, and showed no sedimentation. The highest antibacterial activity was observed in formulation F2, although it was less favored visually due to its color. Formulation F0 was preferred in terms of color and texture, while F2 was superior in aroma. The study concludes that basil leaf extract effectively enhances antibacterial activity in hand sanitizers and holds potential for development as a safe, effective, and eco-friendly natural antiseptic for widespread public use.

Abstract

This study is driven by the growing demand from the labor market for universities to produce graduates who are not only theoretically proficient but also practically competent. The research aims to analyze the collaboration between student volunteers and the Jember Primary Tax Office (KPP Pratama Jember) through the Tax Volunteer Program as a practical learning model in assisting individual taxpayers with the submission of their Annual Tax Returns (SPT). A case study approach was employed, with data collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Participants included student volunteers from local universities and tax officers at KPP Pratama Jember involved in the 2024 tax season. The findings indicate that student involvement significantly contributed to increased taxpayer compliance and enhanced students' professional skills, particularly in communication, service, and tax-related problem-solving. Institutionally, the program helped expand the service reach of the tax office and improved the efficiency of annual tax return reporting. This collaboration illustrates a strategic synergy between higher education institutions and tax authorities in promoting tax literacy and developing competent, ethical human resources. The study concludes that sustainable development of the program requires structured training and policy support. Its practical implications include strengthening partnerships and expanding cross-disciplinary participation in tax assistance activities as a strategy for advancing vocational learning in higher education.

Abstract

This study stems from the limited research on the implementation of Total Quality Management (TQM) in Islamic educational institutions at the district level, despite its significant impact on the competitiveness and relevance of Islamic education in responding to both local and global dynamics. The aim of this research is to descriptively analyze the planning, implementation, evaluation, and the supporting and inhibiting factors in the application of TQM. A qualitative approach was employed using a multi-case study design involving one Madrasah Aliyah and one modern pesantren, both selected purposively. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis, and then thematically analyzed. The findings reveal that both institutions have implemented TQM principles with distinct approaches: the Madrasah Aliyah emphasizes compliance with the National Education Standards (SNP) integrated with Islamic values, while the pesantren fosters a holistic quality environment covering academic performance, student self-reliance, mastery of classical Islamic texts (kitab kuning), and foreign languages. Key supporting factors include visionary leadership, an adaptive organizational culture, and active teacher involvement. Conversely, the main challenges lie in budget constraints, resistance to change, and difficulties in assessing non-academic quality indicators. The study concludes that synergy between the institutions' internal values and external demands is essential for effective TQM implementation. The implications highlight the need to strengthen evaluation systems and provide contextual, sustainable training for human resources to drive holistic quality improvement.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the critical importance of monitoring river water quality, particularly concerning heavy metal content such as iron (Fe), which poses potential risks to both human health and the environment. The objective of this research is to analyze the concentration of Fe in the water of the Kampar River using the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS) method. Water samples were collected from the Kampar River and subjected to a digestion process prior to measurement using AAS at a wavelength of 248.3 nm. The measurement results produced a calibration curve with a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.9997, indicating a very strong linear relationship between concentration and absorbance. The analysis revealed that Fe concentrations in the samples ranged from 0.194 to 0.489 mg/L. While some samples exceeded the 0.3 mg/L threshold established by Government Regulation No. 82 of 2001 for Class II water quality, most remained within the permissible range. These findings demonstrate that the AAS method offers high sensitivity and accuracy in detecting Fe content in river water and can serve as a reliable tool for routine water quality monitoring.

Abstract

This study is driven by the need for selective and efficient adsorbent materials to address heavy metal ion contamination, particularly Fe³⁺, in aquatic environments. The aim of this research is to synthesize C-vanillin calix[4]resorcinarene and evaluate its potential as an adsorbent for Fe³⁺ ions, with a specific focus on optimizing pH as a key parameter in the adsorption process. The compound was synthesized via a reflux method, yielding a solid product weighing 3.9726 grams. Structural characterization was performed using Thin-Layer Chromatography (TLC), FTIR spectroscopy, and melting point analysis. TLC results showed a single spot for each compound, indicating high purity. The FTIR spectrum confirmed the presence of characteristic functional groups, with absorption bands at 3355 cm⁻¹ (O–H), 1605 cm⁻¹ (aromatic C=C), 1426 cm⁻¹ (C–H), and 1211 cm⁻¹ (C–O). The high melting point range of 383–384 °C suggests thermal stability and the formation of a new structure. Adsorption tests for Fe³⁺ ions were conducted across a pH range of 1–6, revealing increased adsorption efficiency with rising pH and a maximum value of 1.9015 mg/g at pH 5. A decline in efficiency was observed at pH 6. The study concludes that C-vanillin calix[4]resorcinarene demonstrates promising selectivity and efficiency as an Fe³⁺ ion adsorbent under specific pH conditions and possesses physicochemical properties conducive to practical applications in water purification.

Abstract

Copper(II) oxide (CuO) is a promising semiconductor material for various applications such as photocatalysis, sensing, and renewable energy devices. However, its performance is often limited by a suboptimal bandgap value for efficient energy conversion. This study aims to evaluate the effects of titanium doping concentration and the addition volume of diethanolamine (DEA) on the optical properties of CuO synthesized via the sol-gel method. The sol-gel technique was chosen for its ability to produce uniform doping distribution and stable nanoparticle structures. Bandgap characterization was conducted using UV-DRS spectroscopy. The results show that the bandgap of pure CuO, initially measured at 1.36 eV, was reduced to 1.28 eV through titanium doping at an optimal concentration of 0.3 mmol. The further addition of DEA at an optimal volume of 1 mL lowered the bandgap to 1.22 eV. This reduction indicates that titanium doping and DEA addition significantly influence the optical properties of CuO. These effects are likely due to structural irregularities such as oxygen vacancies, crystal defects, and impurities, which contribute to modifications in the material’s electronic structure. Additionally, the uniform distribution of microstrain and smaller particle size further contribute to structural alterations and bandgap tuning.

Abstract

The limited number of studies on the transformation of digital-based informatics learning through social media platforms serves as the background for this research, despite the phenomenon’s substantial potential to enhance student learning outcomes in the digital era. This study aims to analyze the impact of implementing a TikTok project on the learning outcomes of Grade XI students in informatics and to assess the effectiveness of digital-based learning transformation. A quantitative approach was employed using a pre-experimental One-Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The sample consisted of 30 Grade XI F8 students from SMAN 1 Gunung Talang, selected through purposive sampling. The research instrument comprised a 34-item multiple-choice informatics achievement test that had been previously validated. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, paired sample t-test, and N-Gain calculation. The results revealed a significant improvement in learning outcomes, with the average score increasing from 47.37 (pretest) to 90.30 (posttest), representing a 90.5% increase. The mean N-Gain score of 0.82 falls into the high category, with 90% of students demonstrating high improvement and 10% moderate improvement. The paired sample t-test yielded a p-value of 0.000 (< 0.05), and Cohen’s d effect size was calculated at 2.904, indicating a very large effect. The study concludes that the implementation of the TikTok project is highly effective in enhancing student learning outcomes and shows strong potential as an innovative model for digital-based informatics learning transformation. The implications include a theoretical contribution to the literature on digital learning and the opening of avenues for further research on the use of other digital platforms and the development of hybrid learning models that integrate technology and pedagogy.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the perspectives and practices of Arabic language teachers concerning teaching ethics at Pondok Pesantren Ummi Kalsum Gunungsitoli. A qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical method was employed. Data collection techniques included observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the implementation of ethical principles in the Arabic language teaching process. The findings reveal that the understanding and application of ethics in Arabic language instruction play a crucial role in shaping positive behavior among both educators and students. Teaching ethics are practiced through role modeling, discipline, and interactions grounded in moral and Islamic values. Teachers actively encourage students to enhance their learning ethics as part of character and moral development. This study focuses on aspects such as students' moral formation, faith reinforcement, and mastery of Arabic and religious sciences, which are central to pesantren education. The implications suggest that ethics-based Arabic language instruction not only strengthens linguistic competence but also supports character education goals within the pesantren context.
