Abstract

Moral or character education has been playing an important role in educating children, teenagers, and younger people noble values of Japanese cultures. This research is based on two research questions: how the practice of moral education in Japanese schools is and how the model for improving character education in Indonesian schools is. This is a qualitative field research with phenomenological approach, in which the data were collected in Japanese schools by using observation, indepth interview, and documentary. The data were analysed descriptively and continuously. The Japanese government gave one hour  lesson for moral education in a week.  With the moral education, Japanese younger generation is expected to be able to adapt to the social environment and have the ability to think, to make effective decisions and to act independently. In addition, they are also expected to have  ability to identify issues they face, and be able to interact with others in international relations and play an important role in international world as well. Japanese moral education has been using the interactive and communicative approach, promoting moral discovery by learners themselves, avoiding the application of indoctrination approach, and no test or  final exam,  for every course of study in moral education (zero test).  In addition the most important thing is that moral education in Japan  applied an  integrated and connected approach among  three centers of education: school,  family, and  community.  All of three educational environments have very important role  as laboratory of  moral or character education.

Abstract

The term jihad is central in the development of Islamic identity and the political usage. The term has created many competing identities within Muslim communities especially in Indonesia, a country with the biggest Muslim population in the world. This article provides a historical analysis of the representation of the term jihad in the writing of Muslim scholars and organizations in Indonesia from the early arrival of Islam to the contemporary debate in the context of democratic transition after the collapse of Soeharto’s authoritarian regime. This article employs discourse analytical tools to look at various interpretations of the concept of jihad in the global context and particularly in the Indonesian context, and how these global and local interpretations are interconnected. The article argues that the doctrine of jihad in the history of Islam has developed into a contested doctrine over a long period of time. The article suggests that there is a long history of substantial minorities promoting militaristic jihad in Indonesia against ‘enemies’ of Islam which are defined variously from colonial state to the Indonesian government. The promotion of militaristic jihad was undermined by the consensus of mainstream moderate and peaceful Islam developed in the middle to late years of the New Order regime. However, the promotion of militaristic jihad reappeared after the fall of the New Order authoritarian regime and was further reinforced by transnational influences.

Abstract

Historically, religious sponsors have played a significant role in promoting holistic growth of students through emphasizing Christian based values in learning institutions. This have been showed by ever increasing seasonal social, moral, and ethical challenges facing students which include early pregnancies among female students, drugs and substance abuse, religious radicalization, burying, arson, among others. However, there has been a great concern from the public discourse on the laxity of the church as religious sponsors in schools from the frequent moral decay displayed by the students today. This article assesses the role of religious sponsors in development of holistic secondary school students in Nyeri County, Kenya. This study adopts a descriptive approach through collecting primary data from 68 CU/CA patrons, 99 students and 68 school administration. This article confirmed that various religious sponsors promote students' moral, social and spiritual development to students through organizing frequent prayer sessions, Biblical expositions, as well as offering Christian based guidance and counseling. However, this have not been to the maximum as could be expected in religious contexts. This study recommends for revitalized pastoral reforms from both the schools and the church. This will ensure that secondary schools fully utilize the rich valuable chaplaincy ministry based on pastoral care and counseling services as facilitated by the respective religious sponsors.
