Abstract

This study aims to investigate the relationship between oral health knowledge and the number of functional teeth among older adults at the Tangguh Senior Citizens’ School in Mojo Village, Surabaya. The study employed a quantitative analytical design using a cross-sectional survey approach, with a population of 70 older adults aged 60 years and older and a sample of 60 respondents selected using the Slovin formula and simple random sampling. Data were collected through a dental and oral health knowledge questionnaire—which had been validated for validity and reliability—and intraoral examinations to count the number of functional teeth. The data were then analyzed using SPSS, including descriptive statistics and Spearman’s rank correlation test. The results showed that the majority of respondents had “poor” knowledge (58.3%) and fewer than 20 functional teeth (78.3%), with a significant positive correlation (r = 0.707, p < 0.05) between better knowledge and a higher number of functional teeth. In conclusion, good oral health knowledge is closely associated with a higher number of functional teeth among older adults in the study location.

Abstract

Hypertension is a noncommunicable disease with a steadily rising prevalence and is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. This study aims to analyze the effect of the four pillars of balanced nutrition on the incidence of hypertension among outpatients at the Bima City General Hospital. The study used a quantitative analytical approach with a case-control design. The study population consisted of 305 outpatients, with a sample of 78 respondents comprising 39 cases and 39 controls selected using purposive sampling. The research instruments consisted of a questionnaire on the four pillars of balanced nutrition and a blood pressure monitor. Data analysis used univariate and bivariate tests with the Chi-Square test and Odds Ratio at a significance level of 0.05. The results of the study indicate that a varied diet (p = 0.039), physical activity (p = 0.000), weight monitoring (p = 0.042), and the total score for the four pillars of balanced nutrition (p = 0.000) have a significant effect on the incidence of hypertension, while clean living behaviors did not have a significant effect (p = 0.481). The conclusion of this study is that the four pillars of balanced nutrition play an important role in controlling hypertension, particularly physical activity as the most dominant factor.

Abstract

Exclusive breastfeeding practices in indigenous communities are often influenced by cultural values, traditions, and belief systems that may affect the risk of stunting among children. This study aimed to analyze cultural practices related to exclusive breastfeeding and their association with stunting risk among the Mbojo ethnic community in Sambori Village. This study employed a quantitative approach with an analytical survey design. The study population consisted of mothers with children under five years of age in Sambori Village, with 32 respondents selected based on the research criteria. Data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire consisting of 13 statements. Data analysis was conducted using SmartPLS, including outer loading, construct reliability and validity, discriminant validity, path coefficient, R-Square, f-Square, and Pearson correlation analyses. The results revealed that Traditional Maternal and Childcare Practices had the strongest positive effect on Stunting Risk (β = 0.909), followed by Culture and Modern Health System (β = 0.742). In contrast, Breastfeeding Practices (β = -0.625) and Maternal Belief Systems (β = -0.405) showed negative effects on Stunting Risk. The R-Square value of 0.582 indicated that the model explained 58.2% of the variance in stunting risk. The study concludes that cultural factors, childcare traditions, and breastfeeding practices play significant roles in shaping stunting risk, highlighting the importance of culturally sensitive nutrition and health interventions.

Abstract

Exclusive breastfeeding is very important for babies. However, despite its many benefits, not all mothers exclusively breastfeed their babies. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between physical, psychological, social, and spiritual barriers in practicing exclusive breastfeeding. This study was a quantitative study with a cross-sectional design. The study was conducted at the RBC Clinic with a sample of 50 respondents. The sampling technique used incidental sampling. The instrument used in this study was a questionnaire that had been tested for validity and reliability. Data analysis was carried out using the chi square test. The results showed that mothers who did not exclusively breastfeed experienced physical barriers as much as 78.9% (p-value <0.001), psychological barriers and social barriers 68.4% (p-value <0.001), and spiritual barriers 42.1% (p-value = 0.016). On average, mothers who did not exclusively breastfeed experienced physical barriers. The conclusion of this study shows a significant relationship between physical, psychological, social, and spiritual barriers in carrying out exclusive breastfeeding practices. In responding to physical, psychological, social, and spiritual barriers, it must be done wisely and comprehensively so that solutions can be found from each aspect and resolved holistically.

Abstract

Hypertension is one of the most significant global health problems and is widely recognized as the silent killer due to its asymptomatic nature and its potential to cause severe complications, including coronary heart disease, kidney failure, and stroke if not properly managed. Adherence to a hypertension diet is a key component of effective blood pressure control and is influenced by several factors, particularly family support. This study aimed to examine the relationship between family support and dietary adherence among patients with hypertension using a literature review approach. A literature search was conducted through the Google Scholar database using the keywords family support, dietary adherence, and hypertension. Indonesian-language articles published between 2017 and 2024 that met the predetermined inclusion criteria were included in the review. A total of 15 eligible articles were analyzed. The findings revealed that 11 studies reported a positive relationship between family support and adherence to a hypertension diet. Emotional, informational, instrumental, and appraisal support provided by family members enhanced patients' motivation to comply with dietary recommendations. Conversely, four studies indicated that inadequate family support was associated with lower levels of dietary adherence. In conclusion, family support plays a crucial role in improving dietary adherence among patients with hypertension and should be strengthened through family-centered education and hypertension management programs.

Abstract

Mothers’ perception of breast milk supply adequacy is an important determinant of exclusive breastfeeding success. Negative perceptions of insufficient milk production may reduce maternal confidence and increase the likelihood of introducing complementary foods before six months. The Hill and Humenick Lactation Scale (HHLS) is a validated instrument that comprehensively measures mothers’ perceptions of breast milk supply adequacy. This study aimed to examine the association between perceived breast milk supply adequacy based on the HHLS and exclusive breastfeeding practices among breastfeeding mothers in suburban communities. A cross-sectional study was conducted at RBC Holis Clinic involving 75 breastfeeding mothers with infants aged 0–6 months selected through incidental sampling. Data were collected using a translated and validated HHLS questionnaire. The association between variables was analyzed using the chi-square test with a significance level of p < 0.05. Most respondents reported positive perceptions of breast milk supply adequacy. Statistical analysis revealed a significant association between perceived milk supply adequacy and exclusive breastfeeding practices (p < 0.05). Mothers with positive perceptions were more likely to exclusively breastfeed than those with negative perceptions. These findings indicate that maternal perception of breast milk supply is closely associated with exclusive breastfeeding. Strengthening perception-based education and lactation counseling may improve exclusive breastfeeding outcomes in suburban communities.

Abstract

Cyber aggression among adolescents has become increasingly prevalent with the widespread use of social media. One factor contributing to this behavior is perceived anonymity, which may encourage aggressive actions through the mechanism of moral disengagement. This study examined the mediating role of moral disengagement in the relationship between perceived anonymity and cyber aggression among adolescent social media users. A quantitative approach was employed involving 360 adolescents aged 16–21 years. Data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results indicated that perceived anonymity had a positive and significant effect on both moral disengagement and cyber aggression. Moral disengagement also positively influenced cyber aggression and significantly mediated the relationship between perceived anonymity and cyber aggression. These findings suggest that anonymity in social media strengthens aggressive behavior by reducing moral self-regulation. Strengthening digital literacy and adolescents' moral self-regulation is therefore essential to prevent cyber aggression.

Abstract

Oral health in children with autism remains a concern because limited toothbrushing skills may increase the debris index. This study aimed to analyze the effect of tooth brushing skill on the debris index among children with autism at Galuh Handayani Inclusive School, Surabaya. This study employed an observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of 41 first and second grade students, while 30 children with autism were selected using purposive sampling. The research instruments included a tooth brushing skill observation checklist and a debris index assessment form. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank test. The results showed that before the intervention, 60% of participants had a poor debris index, whereas after the intervention all participants (100%) achieved a good category. The Wilcoxon test yielded a p value of 0.000, indicating a statistically significant difference in debris index before and after the intervention. It can be concluded that tooth brushing skill significantly reduced the debris index and improved oral health among children with autism.
