Abstract

Community empowerment plays an important role in improving the capacity, skills, and independence of rural communities. One of the effective approaches is through training programs that equip people with practical skills and entrepreneurial opportunities. This article focuses on a community empowerment program carried out in Hiligambukha Village through dishwashing soap-making training. The activity was designed not only to encourage creativity, innovation, and economic independence at the village level. The implementation method consisted of several stages, including preparation, socialization, delivery of theoritical material, live demonstration, participant practice, evaluation, and post-training mentoring. The results of the training showed significant improvement in both knowledge and skilss. Participants successfully produced dishwashing soap independently and demonstrated the ablity to follow production procedures correctly. Beyond meeting household needs, the training opened oppurtunities for participants to market their products and generate additional income. The findings indicate that such training contributes to multiple aspects of community empowerment. It not only provides economic benefits, such as cost savings and income generation, but also fosters self-reliance, teamwork, and enterpreneurial spirit among participants. Therefore, this program can serve as a model for other villages aiming to develop community-based economic initiatives.

Abstract

The Community Service Program (Kuliah Kerja Nyata/KKN) is a form of student engagement aimed at making a tangible contribution to solving community problems in rural areas. Bawomaenamolo Village, located in Luahagundre Maniamolo District, has considerable agricultural potential; however, most farmers still rely on traditional cultivation practices that result in relatively limited yields. One agricultural commodity with strong development potential is water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica), particularly the pull-harvest variety, which is a short-cycle vegetable with high market demand. Through the KKN program, students introduced a simple, efficient, and practical innovation in pull-harvest water spinach cultivation that can be easily adopted by local farmers using home gardens or small paddy fields. The program was implemented through several stages, including observation of local agricultural conditions, socialization with farmers, joint planting practices, and continuous assistance during crop maintenance and harvesting. The results showed that farmers were able to understand the cultivation techniques, apply proper maintenance methods, and harvest the crop within 20–30 days. In addition to providing new agricultural experience for farmers, this innovation has the potential to increase household income through the sale of harvested products in local markets. Therefore, the innovation of pull-harvest water spinach cultivation through the KKN program can serve as an alternative strategy for empowering rural communities in the agricultural sector. This activity not only enhances farmers’ skills but also opens opportunities for sustainable improvements in community welfare when supported by village authorities and implemented consistently.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the utilization of cat’s whiskers leaves (Orthosiphon aristatus) as a traditional herbal medicine in treating kidney stones in Orahili Fondrako Village, Ulususua District. Kidney stones are among the common illnesses suffered by rural communities due to insufficient fluid intake, unbalanced diets, and environmental factors. In the midst of limited access to modern healthcare services, the local community relies on traditional medicinal plants as an alternative treatment, one of which is cat’s whiskers leaves. The method used in this research is a qualitative approach with data collection techniques including in-depth interviews, field observations, and literature studies. The research informants consist of traditional leaders, local healers, and residents who have used cat’s whiskers leaves for kidney stone treatment. The findings show that the leaves are commonly consumed in the form of boiled decoctions taken regularly for several days until the symptoms of kidney stones subside. The community believes that the diuretic properties of cat’s whiskers leaves help facilitate urination and naturally dissolve kidney stones. In addition, this research also reveals the existence of inherited traditional knowledge that plays an important role in the preservation and utilization of medicinal plants in the village. However, the use of cat’s whiskers leaves remains traditional and is not yet supported by scientifically standardized dosages. Therefore, further in-depth studies are needed to examine the effectiveness and safety of cat’s whiskers leaves through clinical trials.

Abstract

This community service activity serves as a meaningful learning medium for students in developing social responsibility, cooperation, and concern for rural community development. Through direct involvement in the field, KKN students learn to understand the real needs of the community and contribute in concrete ways. One of the work programs carried out by KKN students in Hilifarokha Lawa Village is the construction of a “Welcome” sign that functions as both a village identity marker and an information medium. This program was motivated by the absence of a representative village sign, which caused the identity of Hilifarokha Lawa Village to be less visible to visitors and people from outside the area. This condition encouraged the KKN students to provide a simple yet beneficial solution through the creation of a welcome sign. The presence of this sign is expected to provide initial information about the village and create a positive impression for anyone entering the village area. The implementation of the activity was carried out through several planned stages, starting from field observation, coordination with the village government, planning the sign design, to the process of construction and installation. All stages were conducted in a participatory manner by involving the local community, thereby fostering a sense of ownership, togetherness, and the spirit of mutual cooperation. The results of the activity show that the welcome sign not only functions informatively and aesthetically, but also increases the community’s pride in their village. Thus, this activity is expected to provide sustainable benefits for Hilifarokha Lawa Village and serve as a tangible form of student community service.

Abstract

The 2025 community service program was implemented in Nituwu Boho Village, Lolowau District, South Nias Regency, as a form of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education implementation. This activity lasted approximately 40 days, from July 11 to August 20, 2025, and aimed to provide students with practical experience, learning, and skills while supporting the village development program. Based on initial observations, Nituwu Boho Village was running a food security program, but there were still unused vacant lands that had not been utilized optimally. Therefore, the community service program focused on the utilization of vacant land for the cultivation of water spinach (kangkung) as an effort to enhance the village’s food security. The implementation method was participatory, emphasizing communication and interaction between students, village officials, and the local community. The community played an active role as innovators and activators in every stage of the activity, from land preparation, planting, and maintenance, to harvesting the water spinach. This activity aimed not only to increase household food availability but also to raise community awareness about the importance of productive land use. The results showed that water spinach cultivation can be carried out easily, with relatively low costs, and provides quick yields. The program received full support from the residents of Nituwu Boho Village and ran smoothly. Therefore, this community service activity is expected to contribute to strengthening village food security and serve as a sustainable example of utilizing vacant land effectively.

Abstract

Village development through community empowerment is crucial to support the progress and well-being of villagers. The Community Service Program (KKN) in Soledua Village focused on three key issues: kale cultivation, waste management with bamboo bins, and improving the quality of education through private tutoring. These topics were chosen due to the village's limited yard agricultural productivity, low awareness of waste management, and limited access to additional education for children. The community service implementation method employed a participatory approach that actively involved villagers, through outreach, technical training, and direct mentoring during the KKN period. The results of the community service demonstrated a 30% increase in kale productivity, a 65% increase in waste management participation, and a 15% increase in student academic achievement. Furthermore, through the installation of house numbers and the construction of gates, the village supported orderly administration and a spirit of togetherness. In conclusion, the KKN program successfully increased the capacity of the Soledua Village community in local resource management and sustainable development, which can be used as a model for empowering other villages.

Abstract

Liquid Organic Fertilizer (LOF) derived from pig manure waste presents an environmentally friendly and efficient solution for improving soil fertility and agricultural productivity. Traditional pig farming activities generate waste that is rich in nutrients such as nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K), but it is often underutilized, leading to environmental pollution. This study aims to design and test a method for producing LOF using pig manure as the primary material, involving both aerobic and anaerobic fermentation, the addition of decomposer microorganisms, and the formulation of solid sediments for stabilization. The fermentation process takes approximately 21–30 days. Evaluation parameters include pH, organic carbon (C) content, N, P, K levels, effective microbial population, and application effectiveness on vegetable crops in a field trial. The results showed that the LOF met quality standards—neutral pH (6.5–7), sufficient macronutrient content (N 1.2%, P 0.8%, K 1.5%), and a high population of active microbes. Application of LOF (5 mL/L once a week) to mustard greens and water spinach improved plant growth (height, leaf count) and productivity by approximately 20–30% compared to the control. In addition to being efficient, this method positively impacts the environment by reducing odor, gas emissions, and pollution potential. This locally made product also holds economic potential for small-scale farmers and agricultural communities. This work program was carried out by students from KKN Group 20 in La’uso Village as part of the development of Liquid Organic Fertilizer (LOF). We implemented the program according to the proposal submitted and with permission from the La’uso village government. The implementation prioritized communication and interaction with village officials and the community. The success of this KKN program was made possible by the strong support from the people of La’uso Village, Onohazumba District.
