Abstract

This study aims to examine the use of small plots of land for growing mustard greens (Brassica rapa var. Parachinensis) in Koendrafo Village. Limited land in rural areas often hinders the community’s demand for fresh vegetables. Using simple cultivation methods utilizing limited yard space, this study observed the growth , yield, and community acceptance of this farming technique. The result indicate that small plots of land can be optimized to produce high- quality mustard greens, provided they are managed using appropriate soil cultivation techniques, organic fertilization, and regular watering. Utilization of these small plots not only contributes to household food security but also opens up economic opportunities for residents throught the sale of the harvest. Thus, the use of small plots of land in Kendafo Village has proven effective and has the potential for sustainable development.

Abstract

Waste issues in rural areas are often overlooked despite their significant impact on the community's quality of life. Olayama Village, Huruna District, is an example of an area facing significant challenges in waste management due to a lack of facilities and low environmental awareness. Furthermore, this village boasts untapped local economic potential. This study aims to analyze community empowerment efforts through locally-based waste management, utilizing the approach of making trash cans from natural materials such as bamboo and wood. The method used in this activity is a participatory approach involving KKN students and all levels of society in several stages: outreach, observation, production, distribution, and evaluation. The results of this activity indicate a significant increase in public awareness in maintaining environmental cleanliness, waste reduction, and the emergence of productive economic activities involving vulnerable groups such as the underprivileged and empowering the local economy. The resulting trash cans also become marketable commodities to the community, opening up opportunities for community economic development. This activity also encourages village government involvement in supporting similar programs in the future. The conclusion of this activity indicates that waste management not only solves environmental problems but can also be a gateway to sustainable local economic empowerment. Programs like this have the potential to be replicated in other villages, adapting them to their respective local potential and characteristics.

Abstract

Maintaining cleanliness and environmental health around residential areas is a crucial step in preventing the spread of contagious skin diseases within the community. One of the main challenges faced is the ineffective waste management system and the low awareness among residents regarding the importance of environmental cleanliness. This situation makes environmental issues a matter that requires serious attention. This program aims to demonstrate how communities can be empowered to create a clean, healthy, and comfortable living environment. The research employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach, collecting data through direct observation and interactive discussions with the community. The results of this empowerment activity reveal that through the Community Service Program (Kuliah Kerja Nyata or KKN), residents are motivated to actively participate in activities such as communal cleaning efforts, making trash bins from local materials, and more organized waste management. The success of this program is supported by the active involvement of the community and backing from the village government, who together play a role in creating positive and sustainable changes at the village level.

Abstract

Saving is a life skill that needs to be instilled from an early age. However, technological advancements and modern lifestyles often lead children to become more consumerist and less inclined to set aside money. Through the Community Service Program (KKN) in Hilindrasoniha Village, a student team from Nias Raya University Group 7 utilized bamboo, a readily available local natural resource, to create traditional piggy banks. This program aimed to examine the use of bamboo as a traditional piggy bank to raise awareness of saving among children in Hilindrasoniha Village. The research was motivated by the low financial literacy of the community, especially children, and the importance of instilling savings habits from an early age. Bamboo piggy banks were chosen as an educational tool because they are environmentally friendly, economical, readily available, and based on local wisdom, appropriate to local conditions. The implementation method included preparation, piggy bank production, implementation of savings habits, and evaluation of program results. The results showed that the children showed high enthusiasm for using bamboo piggy banks, and they began to develop the habit of setting aside some of their money for savings.

Abstract

The involvement of children with special needs in public music practices remains limited and tends to be confined to special education environments, indicating a gap between musical experiences in schools and social participation in society. This community service project aims to develop inclusive music mentoring practices based on participatory art to foster the participation of 33 students from SLB Negeri Bajawa in outdoor musical activities. The mentoring process ran for eight weeks through stages of initial observation, sound stimulus delivery, response development, group activities, and performance at the Inclusive Music Stage. Evaluation was conducted through observation, field notes, and documentation. Results show that participant involvement developed gradually, marked not by musical technical skills but by increased social interaction, responsiveness to sound stimuli, and the courage to perform in public spaces. Program sustainability is crucial to ensure that the developments achieved can continue consistently.

Abstract

This community service program entitled “Education and Practical Training on the Use of Simple Balances for Elementary School Students in Bawonifaoso Village” aimed to improve students’ understanding of basic science concepts, particularly mass measurement, through hands-on learning activities. The program addressed the common issue in rural elementary schools where science learning is often dominated by theoretical instruction with limited practical experience. To overcome this challenge, the activity was designed using an experiential learning approach involving simple balance tools that are easy to construct, affordable, and suitable for classroom use. The implementation consisted of three main stages: conceptual introduction, practical training, and evaluation. In the conceptual stage, students were introduced to the basic concept of mass and the function of balance instruments. In the practical stage, students worked in groups to measure and compare the mass of various objects using simple balances. The evaluation stage involved observation and simple assessments to measure students’ understanding and skills. The results of the program showed a significant improvement in students’ conceptual understanding, science process skills, and learning motivation. Students became more active, engaged, and confident in conducting simple scientific experiments. In addition, teachers gained new insights into the use of practical learning media that can be applied in daily instruction. Overall, the program demonstrated that the use of simple balances is an effective and sustainable strategy to enhance science learning in elementary schools, particularly in rural areas with limited resources.
