Abstract

The Nias Archipelago, located on the western coast of Sumatra, has a rich biodiversity, including mammal species that play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of ecosystems. The people of Nias have long possessed profound knowledge of mammals through local wisdom passed down through generations. However, the mapping of mammalian taxonomy in this area is still limited. This community service activity aims to map the mammalian taxonomy of the Nias Archipelago by integrating scientific perspectives with the local wisdom of the community. Through a participatory approach, local people are involved in the identification of mammal species, recording local names, and understanding their habitats and behaviors. The results of this community service activity show that the people of Nias have extensive knowledge of the mammal species around them, which has not been fully documented in scientific studies. This approach not only enriches the mammalian taxonomy data in the Nias Archipelago but also raises community awareness of the importance of environmental conservation. The mapping results can serve as a basis for more effective conservation efforts by integrating traditional knowledge and scientific approaches to preserve biodiversity in the region.

Hili Amaodula Village, one of the villages located in the administrative area of Pulau-Pulau Batu sub-district, South Nias, experiences stunting problems with several characteristics such as children's height and weight being smaller than children of the same age, experiencing growth and development disorders, looking weak all the time, being prone to health problems, and being less active. Therefore, it is considered good to empower PKK (Family Welfare Supervisors) mothers to process foods such as snacks with natural ingredients containing carbohydrates, iron, protein, vitamins, calcium, and iron that support children's health development. These healthy snacks are processed with various variants that are liked by mothers and children and can support the health of the residents of Hili Amaodula Village. The objectives of this program are 1) as an effort to improve the healthy lifestyle of the people of Hili Amaodula Village, Pulau-Pulau Batu Sub-district; 2) an effort to reduce and prevent stunting in Hili Amaodula Village; 3) efforts to build the creative potential of mothers in managing healthy snacks for families; 4) as a place for mothers to learn to sort clean and healthy food ingredients. The implementation method is carried out in three stages: preparation, implementation (socialization, training, exhibition/bazaar), and evaluation and reporting. Based on the results of interviews and observations, the people of Hili Amaodula village were very enthusiastic about participating in this activity, especially the PKK mothers. The knowledge and initiative of the PKK mothers also increased. The Village Government hopes that community activities like this can be sustainable.

Plastic waste management poses a significant challenge in many villages, including Desa Bawolowalangi. The community service program titled “Transformation of Aqua Plastic Bottles into Environmentally Friendly Trash Bins Based on Local Wisdom in Desa Bawolowalangi” aims to address this issue through innovative recycling that integrates local cultural values. This activity involves technical training on recycling aqua plastic bottles as well as the application of motifs and designs unique to Desa Bawolowalangi on trash bin products. This participatory and sustainable approach not only raises environmental awareness but also strengthens cultural identity and opens new economic opportunities for the local community. As a result, the recycled products are not only environmentally friendly but also have high market value, contributing to improved community welfare. Assistance in production management and digital marketing further strengthens the program’s sustainability. These findings demonstrate that integrating local wisdom in waste management can be an effective strategy to empower communities while preserving environmental sustainability. This program is expected to serve as an innovative and sustainable waste management model for other villages in Indonesia.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to integrate the local wisdom of Te Aro Naweak Lako into character education at elementary schools in Wamena, Jayawijaya Regency, Papua. Te Aro Naweak Lako embodies the values of empathy (naweak) and togetherness (lako), which align with the goals of character education to develop students who are virtuous and socially caring. The implementation methods include teacher training, development of learning modules based on local culture, classroom mentoring, and evaluation through observation and interviews. Teachers from three elementary schools actively participated in this process. The results showed an increased understanding among students of the values of empathy, responsibility, and cooperation. This activity also strengthened the relationship between schools and the indigenous community by involving local leaders who revived folk stories and communal work practices (gotong royong), which have increasingly been marginalized by modernization. Student character evaluations indicated significant improvements in empathy, responsibility, cooperation, and cultural appreciation. Teachers and parents expressed appreciation for this approach because it is more contextual and has a direct impact on student behavior both at school and at home. This activity recommends replicating the Te Aro Naweak Lako model in other schools across the Papua highlands as a means of cultural preservation and strengthening character education based on local wisdom.

Abstract

The peatland ecosystem in Nagan Raya Regency is under significant pressure due to the construction of artificial canals, land-use conversion, and unsustainable cultivation practices, which have increased vulnerability to fires and degraded environmental quality. In this context, the SUPA-GIZ project implemented a community service initiative aimed at supporting peatland ecosystem restoration through a participatory approach. The approach involved cross-stakeholder coordination, including local government authorities, farmer groups, and community organizations, to ensure the engagement of all relevant parties. The activities employed methods such as field surveys to identify critical canals contributing to degradation, awareness campaigns on the importance of peatland conservation, technical training on canal blocking, and the development of restoration intervention designs. The results of these activities demonstrated significant achievements, including the identification of ten critical canals requiring immediate attention, an increase in community understanding of the peatland ecosystem from 35% to 82%, and the establishment of Village Peatland Alert Teams. Changes in community behavior, such as implementing canal-blocking techniques and practicing more environmentally friendly land management, served as indicators of the intervention’s success. This participatory model demonstrated the effectiveness of combining local education with technical interventions to mitigate peat fire risks. The success of this approach presents opportunities for replicating community-based strategies in other peatland areas, offering a sustainable method for ecosystem restoration, fire risk reduction, and the enhancement of community capacity for collective environmental management.

Abstract

This community service program was carried out with the primary goal of enhancing the capacity and self-reliance of rice farmers in implementing the concept of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) based on environmentally friendly principles. Through this approach, farmers are expected to reduce their dependence on chemical pesticides, which have long posed potential negative impacts on health, the environment, and the ecological balance of paddy field ecosystems. The program was implemented through a seven-session workshop consisting of interactive lectures, group discussions, field demonstrations, and hands-on practice. Each session focused on improving farmers’ knowledge and practical skills, such as identifying natural pest enemies, utilizing botanical pesticides, and applying rice cultivation techniques that support IPM systems. Evaluation was conducted using a pre–post test on six indicators of knowledge and behavioral intention. The results showed a significant improvement: five out of six indicators reached a success rate above 80%, while farmers’ commitment to reducing chemical pesticide use reached 76%. These outcomes are consistent with recent literature (FAO, 2022; IRRI, 2020; Rahman et al., 2023), which highlights the effectiveness of IPM and the importance of participatory extension approaches in promoting sustainable agricultural practices. The program recommends continued mentoring, particularly in the production of botanical pesticides and the implementation of synchronized planting strategies, to strengthen the resilience of local agricultural ecosystems.
