Abstract

This community service program, titled “Enhancing Children's Learning Interest Through Reading Activities in Celebration of the Mission and Reformation in Bawonifaoso Village”, aimed to improve children's literacy skills and foster a lifelong interest in reading. The program implemented various reading activities, including interactive storytelling, mobile reading carts, reading corners, and group discussions, integrated with the village’s mission and reformation celebrations to create a culturally relevant and engaging learning environment. Observations and evaluations revealed that children showed increased reading motivation, better comprehension, and higher participation in reading sessions. The program also emphasized the importance of family and community involvement, as parental support and local volunteer participation significantly contributed to the sustainability of the initiative. Despite some challenges, such as limited access to reading materials and variations in parental engagement, the program effectively demonstrated that structured, interactive, and culturally contextualized reading activities could enhance children’s learning interest. The results suggest that combining literacy programs with community engagement and culturally meaningful events can nurture a positive reading culture among children, promoting both academic growth and personal development.

Abstract

This community service project, conducted in Bawonifaoso Village, Nias, aimed to explore and promote the role of Sofo-sofo (Ageratum conyzoides) in strengthening health awareness and preserving local wisdom. Sofo-sofo is a medicinal plant traditionally used by the Nias community as a natural tonic and for various health purposes, yet its potential remains underutilized among younger generations. The project employed participatory approaches, including workshops, demonstration gardens, herbal preparation training, and storytelling sessions with local elders, to enhance both knowledge and practical skills regarding Sofo-sofo. The results indicate a significant increase in community awareness of Sofo-sofo’s health benefits, particularly its role in improving stamina and supporting general wellness. Participants reported incorporating Sofo-sofo into their daily routines and expressed a renewed appreciation for traditional medicinal practices. The project also strengthened intergenerational knowledge transfer, fostering cultural pride and sustaining intangible heritage. Moreover, the integration of Sofo-sofo activities into local cultural events and schools enhanced community engagement and motivation. These findings highlight the effectiveness of combining local wisdom with health promotion initiatives, demonstrating that culturally grounded interventions can simultaneously improve health literacy and preserve heritage. The project provides a model for leveraging ethnobotanical knowledge in rural community development, emphasizing sustainability, community ownership, and the integration of traditional practices with modern health education.

Abstract

This community service program aims to enhance environmental awareness through the integration of environmental education and local wisdom in Hiliamaetaluo Village, South Nias Regency. The village possesses significant socio-cultural potential, including local wisdom values such as mutual cooperation (gotong-royong), prohibitions against dumping waste into rivers, and respect for nature inherited from ancestors. However, environmental management practices still face challenges, including habitual littering, limited supporting facilities, and a lack of awareness among younger generations regarding traditional values. The program was implemented through several stages: identification of environmental issues, environmental education workshops based on local wisdom, village clean-up activities, and participatory community evaluation. This method combines participatory, educational, and cultural approaches, making it easier for the community to understand the importance of environmental conservation while instilling cultural values. The results indicate increased community participation, initial behavioral changes in waste sorting and management, public space greening, and the formation of collective awareness to protect the environment. Furthermore, the program strengthened the community’s sense of ownership, positioning local wisdom values as ethical and practical foundations for environmental management. This community service demonstrates that the integration of environmental education and local wisdom can serve as an effective strategy for sustainable village-level development while reinforcing cultural identity and social solidarity. This model has the potential to be replicated in other villages with similar cultural contexts.

Abstract

This community service program was carried out with the main objective of reducing farmers’ dependence on chemical pesticides by introducing and training them in the production of botanical pesticides made from soursop leaves (Annona muricata) and lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus). The program was implemented in Dusun II Bakaru, Siwalubanua I Village, Gunungsitoli Idanoi District, in collaboration with the Tanjung Morawa Farmers Group as the primary partner. The activities were systematically designed through several stages, including socialization about the negative impacts of chemical pesticides, training in the preparation of botanical pesticides, field assistance during application, and evaluation of the results. During implementation, farmers showed great enthusiasm in participating in every training session. Based on the evaluation results, farmers’ understanding of the benefits and working mechanisms of botanical pesticides increased by 85%. Moreover, the application of these natural pesticides successfully reduced pest attack intensity by up to 70%, which had a positive impact on crop yields. This activity not only provided ecological benefits by reducing chemical residues in the environment but also fostered entrepreneurial awareness among farmers. Several participants even began developing small-scale businesses to produce botanical pesticides independently. Thus, this community service program has made a tangible contribution to realizing sustainable agriculture, enhancing farmers’ self-reliance, and promoting the utilization of local resources as a new economic potential for rural communities.

Abstract

Hate speech has become an increasingly prevalent issue on social media platforms. Instagram, initially designed as a social networking space, has evolved into a medium for public and political discourse while simultaneously facilitating the spread of hate speech. This study examines the forms and linguistic strategies of hate speech found in Instagram comments related to the controversy surrounding an Indonesian political figure’s educational credentials. Using a qualitative method and a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) approach, data were collected through documentation and purposive sampling. A structured recording technique was applied to document, categorize, and code relevant comments. The results found show that hate speech appears in the form of insults, defamation, unpleasant acts, and the spread of potentially misleading or false information. Such expressions are not only emotional but also display structured patterns intended to construct stigma and delegitimization. These findings emphasize the importance of strengthening digital literacy and implementing regulations to foster more ethical and responsible online interaction.

Abstract

Science and technology have developed very rapidly over time; therefore, their advancement has had a significant impact on various aspects of human life. One form of innovation that can be utilized in the educational field is the use of the Kahoot application as an interactive quiz-based learning medium. In this context, PLP II students who carried out their PLP II program at SMA Negeri 1 Kambera conducted a socialization activity on the use of the Kahoot application as an effort to support teachers and students in implementing technology-based learning. This socialization activity was conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Kambera with the aim of introducing the Kahoot application to teachers and students in order to enhance learning motivation and interest. The methods employed included lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on practice using the Kahoot application through interactive quiz sessions. The socialization of the Kahoot application at SMA Negeri 1 Kambera successfully enhanced the learning process carried out by both students and teachers through interactive quizzes. This was evidenced by a significant improvement in understanding, as pre-test scores (10–50, low to moderate) increased substantially in the post-test to 60–100. Furthermore, the success of the activity was also reflected in the program satisfaction score, which reached 89% and was categorized as Very High.
