Abstract

Background: Xerostomia often occurs in the elderly and can be overcome by administering artificial saliva. Xerostomia is closely related to the incidence of oral candidiasis. Candida albicans is the main fungal species that causes oral candidiasis. To minimize the risk of oral candidiasis in patients with xerostomia, it is necessary to add antifungal agents to artificial saliva. Propolis extract (Trigona Sp.) contains antifungal compounds which are expected to inhibit the growth of Candida albicans. Objective: To determine the effect of adding propolis extract with artificial saliva on the growth of Candida albicans. Method: In vitro laboratory experiment with a post test only control group design. The test solutions used were propolis extract (Trigona Sp.) 15.625 mg/ml, 31.25 mg/ml, 62.5 mg/ml, 125 mg/ml and 250 mg/ml, nystatin as a positive control, and artificial saliva as a negative control. Antifungal test was carried out by disc diffusion method. Results: Propolis extract (Trigona Sp.) added with artificial saliva showed an inhibition zone start from concentration of 15.625mg/ml until 250mg/ml. The highest inhibition zone is at concentration of 62.5mg/ml. Conclusion: Propolis extract (Trigona Sp.) added with artificial saliva can inhibit the growth of Candida albicans.

Abstract

Plaque is a soft, colorless deposit containing bacteria that adheres to the surface of the teeth and surrounds the gingiva and other hard surfaces in the oral cavity. A disclosing agent is a selective dye that can detect the presence of dental plaque by changing the color of the plaque so that it contrasts with the tooth surface. Henna has many properties and can produce staining. Lawsone is the main ingredient in the henna plant. Lawsone has a high affinity for binding to proteins and causing staining. The aim is to determine the potential of henna leaf extract (L. inermis L.) as a natural disclosing agent. Laboratories carried out experimental research using rats as experimental animals. The rats were divided into seven groups: control, henna leaf ethanol extract (100%), 50% (25%) group, 12.5% (6.25%), and 3.125% (3.5%) group. The henna leaf ethanol extract group with a concentration of 50% that was left for 30 seconds produced a color close to the positive control used, namely the disclosing agent. The ethanol extract of henna leaves with a concentration of 50%, which was left for 30 seconds, produced a brown to grayish brown color on rat dental plaque and has the potential to be a natural disclosing agent.

Abstract

Introduction: Root canal treatment is a common procedure in dentistry. The main indications for root canal treatment are irreversible pulpitis and pulpal necrosis resulting from a carious process, fracture, or trauma to the tooth. The success of root canal treatment depends on various factors, one of which is post-endodontic restoration. Objective: This case report aims to demonstrate a one-visit root canal treatment followed by endocrown restoration. Case report: A 22-year-old male patient came with complaints of throbbing tooth pain in the lower right side since 1 week ago. Intra oral examination of tooth 46 showed a temporary filling on the occlusal surface. Radiographic findings showed that the crown had a radiopaque appearance reaching the pulp chamber, without periapical abnormalities. Root canal treatment was performed based on the diagnosis of irreversible pulpitis followed by endocrown restoration. Root canal treatment begins with mandibular block anesthesia and then inserts a rubber dam, opens the cavity, explores the root canal, and prepares the root canal. Biomechanical preparation was carried out using a single length technique, combined with 5.25% NaOCl irrigation, 17% EDTA, and 2% chlorhexidine. Root canal closure was performed in single visit, with the warm vertical condensation technique. The next restoration was carried out one week after root canal treatment, with an endocrown. A week later the patient came for control with no complaints. Conclusion: Root canal treatment in single visit followed by endocrown restoration was successfully carried out.
