Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze the intrinsic elements of the South Korean film Train to Busan, which was directed by Yeon Sang-Ho. The film Train to Busan (2016) is a film that captures the essence of human nature, especially compassion and fear when faced with unexpected and dangerous situations, making it an interesting subject for literary analysis. It tells a story of a father named Seok-woo, who takes his daughter to Busan by train during a sudden zombie outbreak. As the conflict rises, Seok-woo’s character gradually develops into a compassionate, brave and selfless figure. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method to examine the intrinsic elements of the film through observation and interpretation of the themes, characters, characterization, plot, settings, point of view, and the moral value of the film. The analysis reveals that Train to Busan not only presents horror action and survival plot, but it also contains the reflections of social, moral, and emotional struggles in modern society. The result of this study is expected to enrich literary appreciation by showing that a horror survival film can convey deep messages of compassion, sacrifice, and moral strength.

Abstract

This study was prompted by the low English-language proficiency of eighth-grade students at SMPN 2 Ubud, characterized by issues with pronunciation, fluency, and comprehension in speaking. One learning method to deal with this problem is the Talking Chips. The purpose of this study is to improve the speaking skills of eighth-grade students at SMPN 2 Ubud during the academic year 2025–2026 using Talking Chips. Classroom Action Research is a study methodology that consists of two cycles: planning, action, observation, and reflection (CAR). The research subjects were thirty-three students from class VIII-D. The research tools included a questionnaire to measure student responses and a speaking exam (pre- and post-test). The study found that the children’s speaking skills increased dramatically. In cycles I and II, the average student score rose from 44.24 on the pre-test to 64.66 on the post-test and 79.54 on the post-test, respectively. Additionally, the survey results showed that the students received the Talking Chips method well. The results show that using the Talking Chips can improve students’ speaking skills. English teachers are encouraged to adopt the Talking Chips strategy as an alternative teaching method to improve students’ speaking skills and engagement.

Abstract

Reading is a fundamental skill that plays a crucial role in students’ academic success and language development. Students with a strong interest in reading are more likely to engage in reading activities, which may contribute to better reading comprehension. This study aimed to explore the relationship between reading interest and reading comprehension among elementary school students. The study employed a quantitative correlational research design. Data were collected using two research instruments: a reading interest questionnaire to measure students’ levels of reading interest and a reading comprehension test to assess their comprehension ability. The participants of the study were fifth-grade elementary school students selected through a random sampling technique. The collected data were analysed using descriptive statistics and Spearman Rank correlation analysis after meeting the necessary statistical assumptions. The findings revealed a significant positive relationship between reading interest and reading comprehension. Students with higher levels of reading interest tended to demonstrate better reading comprehension performance. These findings suggest that fostering students’ interest in reading may contribute to the improvement of their reading comprehension skills and support literacy development at the elementary school level.

Abstract

This study investigates types, frequency and distribution of error in descriptive paragraph written by first-year university students. Error Analysis has been widely employed in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) research to investigate students' writing difficulties and interlanguage development. The analysis focused on three categories of error: grammatical, lexical, and mechanical errors. Moreover, this study incorporates linguistic and cultural perspectives to compare how those dimensions influence students’ errors. Descriptive qualitative approach is done, supported by quantitative frequency analysis is done by classifying errors made by students. The findings reveal that mechanical errors occur more frequently followed by grammatical and lexical. The most recurrent mechanical errors involve misplacement or omission of commas, full stop and capitalization. These errors indicate limited awareness of English writing conventions. This study suggests that EFL writing instruction should place greater emphasis on writing mechanics alongside with grammatical and lexical development to enhance students' writing accuracy.
