Abstract

This study explored the connection between motivation and speaking ability among eighth-grade students at SMPN 2 Kuta Utara during the 2022/2023 academic year. Out of a population of 413 students, a sample of 42 students was selected through random sampling to represent the group. To collect data, two key research instruments were employed: a motivation questionnaire to gauge the students' level of enthusiasm and determination and a speaking test focused on delivering a descriptive monologue to assess their oral communication skills. The data were analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation in SPSS Statistics 25, which revealed a correlation coefficient of 0.673. This finding indicates a statistically significant and strong relationship between students’ motivation and their speaking ability, with the correlation classified as high (0.60–0.799). In essence, the more motivated the students were, the better their speaking ability tended to be. These results emphasize the critical role of motivation in language learning and suggest that fostering motivation could be a key strategy for improving speaking proficiency in English classes. Such insights could inform teaching strategies and highlight the importance of addressing both cognitive and affective factors in speaking classroom activities.

Conducted as classroom action research, the study was completed in three cycles, with data collected through a series of assessments: pre-test, post-test 1, post-test 2, and post-test 3. The results revealed a significant improvement in the students' mean scores from the pre-test to the post-tests, demonstrating that both correction techniques contributed positively to their writing development. This research concludes that the integration of self-correction and peer-correction effectively enhances students' writing skills, fostering a more accurate and reflective approach to language use.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify cognitive domain categories included in the textbook used to teach English for first-grade elementary school students in Indonesia. The study's findings can help publishers and educators understand textbook material and determine if more content is needed to achieve national requirements. The identification was based on the revised Bloom's taxonomy, which proposes six degrees of cognitive dimension. The authors adopt the qualitative method. The activities were categorized according to the levels of the cognitive dimensions, and the data were arranged in the data analysis table. The result showed that there were 82 tasks in the textbook. 46 (56,1%) remembering, 12 (14,6%) understanding, 15 (18,3%) applying, 9 (11%) analyzing, 0 (0%) evaluating, and 0 (0%) creating. Moreover, 73 activities were classified as lower order thinking (LOTS) and 9 activities as higher order thinking (HOTS) activities. The main task was remembering which the highest cognitive level listed in the Revised Bloom's Taxonomy. Furthermore, there are considerable differences in how LOTS and HOTS tasks are distributed throughout chapters but some chapters also do not have HOTS. These results imply that students' higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) may not be sufficiently developed by depending just on the textbook.

Abstract

Speaking skills are crucial for effective communication and a cornerstone of language learning. However, many seventh-grade students at SMPN 2 Ubud in the academic year 2024/2025 exhibited deficiencies in their speaking skills, characterized by shyness and fear of making mistakes. This research aimed to investigate whether the implementation of the ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) technique could significantly improve the speaking skills of these students. A classroom action research approach was employed, involving two cycles of data collection through pre-tests, post-tests, and student questionnaires. The results demonstrated a significant improvement in the students' mean scores from the pre-test to the post-test, indicating the effectiveness of the ESA technique. 1 Furthermore, the questionnaire revealed positive student feedback regarding the implementation of this approach. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the ESA technique is an effective strategy for enhancing the speaking skills of seventh-grade students at SMPN 2 Ubud in the academic year 2024/2025.

Abstract

Speaking is one of the important language skills among reading, listening, and writing skills. By mastering speaking skills, a person can communicate well to convey the information they have to others. However, there are several problems experienced by students in learning English, including student comprehension, grammatical errors, and fluency. The purpose of this study is mainly to determine whether the writing skills of seventh grade students of SMPN 7 Denpasar in the 2024/2025 academic year can be improved through the roundtable technique. This study uses a classroom action research design carried out in two cycles. The required data were collected by providing research instruments: monologue performance tests and structured questionnaires. After the research cycle process, it was found that the roundtable technique was an appropriate teaching technique to improve the subject's writing skills, especially in composing and performing short descriptive monologues. This can be seen from the results of the pre-test, post-test 1 and post-test 2, which showed a significant increase in the subject's writing skills. In addition, this is supported by a structured questionnaire that showed a positive response to the application of the roundtable technique. It can be concluded that the writing skills of class VII students of SMPN 7 Denpasar in the 2024/2025 academic year can be improved by applying the roundtable technique.

Abstract

Writing is a vital learning tool that helps students better grasp language elements in authentic settings, which is why it is so important in language instruction. This implies that in order for students to write well, they must use their minds. Motivation is therefore essential in writing since it is an internal force that motivates and enables students to act. The researcher is therefore interested in determining whether motivation and writing ability are significantly correlated. The primary objective of this research is to ascertain whether there is a noteworthy correlation between the writing proficiency and motivation of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 14 Denpasar during the 2024–2025 academic year. Using an ex-post facto design and a correlation technique, the study included 122 students from three classes who were chosen using cluster sampling. A writing exam and a questionnaire were the research instruments used to gather data. The research process revealed a high correlation between writing skills and motivation. The findings demonstrated a considerable correlation (a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.727) between students' writing abilities and motivation. In summary, writing proficiency and motivation are significantly correlated among seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 14 Denpasar in the 2024–2025 school year.
