Abstract

There are lots of researches conducting study on Angie Thomas’ the Hate U Give that triggers the researcher to do the study on the same novel. Most of the previous researchers refer to racism as the issue of their study, yet, the researcher comes to the result of the racism indeed with different theory. Using Gramsci’s hegemony theory and close reading method together with dramatic and descriptive approach, the study finds that the unfair judgement by the majority people (the result of racism) brings misery to the minority one, the black community. The unfair judgement refers to the full control of the black organization, the Black Panthers, physical harm, and inhuman treatment. The effects of the unfair judgement refers to the oppression of the black people and the betrayal of the black person.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the Question-Answer Relationship (QAR) strategy in improving the reading comprehension of eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 5 Lubuklinggau. The background of this research stems from students' low comprehension skills, particularly in understanding the structure and meaning of explanation texts. The study employed a quantitative method using a pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test. The sample consisted of 33 students from class XI-F4, selected through cluster random sampling. The research instrument was a multiple-choice reading comprehension test focused on explanation texts. Data were analysed using the Chi-Square method for normality testing and a paired t-test for hypothesis testing. The results revealed that the students’ average score improved from 63.78 in the pre-test to 75.06 in the post-test. The paired sample t-test showed a significant difference (tcount = 6.05 > ttable = 1.697), indicating that the QAR strategy had a positive effect on students’ reading comprehension. The findings suggest that QAR enhances students’ ability to comprehend texts by training them to classify and answer different types of questions. This strategy also promotes active reading, critical thinking, and student engagement. Therefore, the QAR strategy is recommended for use in teaching reading, particularly explanation texts, at the senior high school level. Future research is encouraged to apply the QAR strategy to different text genres or in combination with digital media to further explore its broader applicability in diverse learning contexts.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the types of semantic meaning found in the comments section of Cinta Laura’s Instagram account (@claurakiehl). The study uses a descriptive qualitative method to identify and classify comments based on Geoffrey Leech’s (1981) theory of seven types of meaning; conceptual, connotative, social, affective, reflected, collocative, and thematic. A total of 516 English-language comments collected from eleven posts made in April 2025 were analyzed. The findings reveal that all seven types of meaning appear, with Affective Meaning being the most dominant (44%), followed by Conceptual Meaning (20.9%) and Connotative Meaning (18%). The results indicate that Instagram comments serve as expressive linguistic media that reflect emotional engagement, social relationships, and symbolic interpretation. This study contributes to the understanding of semantic meaning in digital communication contexts and demonstrates the role of language in expressing identity and emotion on social media.
