Abstract

One of the significant elements of writing skills is cohesion. Cohesion is a concept that refers to the connection and smooth relationship between elements in a text or discourse. In the context of writing, cohesion is the ability to connect ideas, sentences, or paragraphs so that they form a coherent and easy-to-understand whole. Cohesion plays an important role in ensuring that a text has a logical flow and can be understood well by readers. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate cohesive devices found in graduate students' theses. It is the case that the language that is utilized the most frequently in print, electronic, and internet media is English. Writing in English is becoming an increasingly crucial ability, particularly in the academic sphere, as English continues to prevail as the universal language of choice for scientific research and publications. To comprehensively analyze how cohesive devices are utilized in the thesis text, the present study employs a qualitative descriptive method. Coding was used to analyze the data from the theses written by one graduate students. The categories of text and texture, cohesion, grammatical cohesion, and lexical cohesion were considered during the analysis. Based on the findings of this study, grammatical coherence was examined in eight sentences, while lexical cohesion was examined in four sentences.

Abstract

The study of literary titles in literature is not new but has become prominent in modern space of literary analysis. People no longer see literary titles as mere appendages with which they identify a literary work, but rather, they look at it as a roadmap to the consumption of the text. A. careful analysis of a literary title as a paratext, provides a clear picture of the narrative and highlights expectations for reading such a text. This is what has made the study of titology relevant in literary studies and literary stylistics.  The objective of this paper is to examine how Asare uses the title: Ananse in the Land of Idiots to portray the characters and their actions in the play; to establish a relationship between the title of the play and its meaning; and to add style with meaning to the overall understanding of the play. The research involved here is qualitative in nature and a close reading method of the primary source and ideas from Genette and other leading critics on the theory of titology are used to study how the title reflects the actions of the characters throughout the play. After a careful analysis of the play in relation to its title, it is revealed that the title does not just identify the drama work. Rather, the title is reflected throughout the plot of the play and adds a metaphorical meaning as well as style to the drama piece. It is concluded established that Asare coins this title stylistically to prompt African leaders and their citizenry about their actions and inactions that facilitate the manipulation of Africa by the West. This implies that a titological approach to literary titles holds the potential of revealing hidden meanings in literary works which are often overlooked.

Abstract

The study of Malay linguistics is a dynamic and intellectually engaging pursuit that provides valuable insights into the nuanced subtleties of one of the world's most widely spoken languages. The study of the Malay language holds a significant place in the extensive field of linguistic research because it reflects the diverse linguistic and cultural legacy of the Malay Archipelago. The study explores and analyses Malay linguistic studies conducted over the past two decades, examining trends, types of studies, research methodologies, prevalent themes, and author networks within Malay linguistics. The study employs bibliometric analysis of articles retrieved from the Scopus database using the keyword "Malay Linguistic." Utilising Vosviewer software, it identifies key trends and essential research themes within Malay linguistics. The findings revealed several key points. Firstly, publication trends in Malay linguistics varied over two decades, peaking at 91 publications in 2023, with stability observed from 2004 to 2009. This dynamic reflects evolving research interests with 724 publications. Major publishing venues were predominantly international journals in Malaysia and beyond the Malay Archipelago. Secondly, qualitative research was the primary method, often complemented by interdisciplinary and mixed-method approaches. Thirdly, common themes included Malay communities, dialect variations, identity, language structure, and applied linguistics. Fourthly, the author network in Malay linguistics remains interconnected, primarily among researchers from the Malay Peninsula. The trend of study themes in Malay linguistics has remained relatively stable, showing continuity with the status quo of the previous patterns. However, there has been a noticeable development in publication venues and author networks during this period.

Abstract

Poetry is a literary form that conveys the poet's emotions and thoughts through an imaginative and structured process. It is rich in emotion and distinct in its expression. Writing poetry involves channeling imagination into lines and stanzas, reflecting the poet's creative freedom and ownership. Within the framework of existentialism, poets exercise complete freedom in crafting their poetry without external influence. This study employs a qualitative approach using Hermeneutic analysis and data validation techniques, where data are validated through thorough reading to ascertain the meaning of each word and phrase. The data sources consist of seven poetry texts created by members of the extracurricular poetry group at MTs Miftahul Huda Palang Tuban. Data were collected in the form of words, phrases, and stanzas that depict existentialism, particularly individual freedom. The findings reveal five existential themes in the poetry: "me" (29%), "heart" (14%), "love" (14%), "friends" (29%), and "God" (14%). The terms "me" and "best friend" are the most prevalent, highlighting the themes of self-identity and interpersonal relationships as forms of existence. This study demonstrates that the poet's existence is manifested through the choice of words, with the dominant themes reflecting the poet's exploration of identity, relationships, and individual freedom.

Abstract

The pedagogical practices mostly applied in the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) contexts include case-based learning (CBL). The CBL directs lecturers to teach their students about real decision-making scenarios. It is interactive learning and includes student-centered learning that shifts the classroom process to improve students’ critical learning and oral communicative skills. Therefore, this study investigates the pedagogical practices predominantly employed in ESP contexts, with a particular focus on case-based learning. CBL encourages lecturers to engage students with real decision-making scenarios, fostering an interactive, student-centered learning environment. This approach aims to enhance students' critical thinking and oral communication skills. Consequently, the research aims to explore how pedagogical practices can be used to improve these skills. To achieve this objective, the researchers conducted classroom action research involving 25 Accounting department students at State Polytechnic, Malang, who were enrolled in ESP courses. Data were collected through questionnaires, interview guidelines, and classroom observations, comprising both qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were analyzed through data condensation, data display, and drawing and verifying conclusions. The findings indicate that students showed significant improvement in both critical thinking and oral communication skills. In terms of critical thinking, students demonstrated the ability to analyze and evaluate arguments presented by their peers, discerning the truthfulness of the information. Regarding speaking skills, students effectively organized and communicated their ideas. These findings suggest that case-based learning is a valuable method for enhancing language skills, including reading, writing, and listening, in addition to speaking and critical thinking. Future studies should consider applying CBL to other aspects of language teaching to further validate its efficacy.

Abstract

Fairy tales can be used as the medium to comprehend the word formation using the derivational suffixes and the word structure using syntactic functions. Furthermore, adjectives are an important class words needed to create a descriptive text that is required in English task, test, or daily use. This research was conducted to identify the types of derivational suffixes that form adjectives and analyze the syntactic functions of derived words. Therefore, the present study is categorized as a qualitative study. The data were obtained from a book titled ‘The Snow Princess and Other Tales’ written by Hans Christian Andersen. The data were gathered using observation and note-taking techniques. The collected data were analyzed by using a descriptive qualitative technique. This research applied an informal method to present the data analysis. The findings of this research revealed that all twelves of the derivational suffixes to form adjective are found in the source. Suffix -al, -ate, -ish, -able, and -less form adjective from noun, suffix -ing, -ise/ize, -ive, -able, and -ing form adjective from verb, and suffix -ish and -ly form adjective and adverb from adjective. Meanwhile, for the syntactic functions the derived words can be functioned as the object, complement, and adverbial element; however, the function as subject and predicator. The result showed that fairy tales are able to help English learners to gain adjectives and its structure in a sentence.

Abstract

The motivational aspect has great influence on the urge to develop as does self-efficacy brings optimism towards attaining learning goals. High self-efficacy results to motivation for success in learning activities since the individual believes in his or her ability to accomplish a task. The current study indicates the importance of motivation and self-efficacy as the primary indicators of English learning proficiency. Therefore, the present study is aimed at assessing the correlation between motivation, self-efficacy, and language proficiency, with a particular focus on gender. The study employs a quantitative study by using a correlational method, using two types of questionnaires to obtain the data from the sample consisting of 71 participants, both 48 males and 23 females. The interplay of motivation, self-efficacy, and language proficiency across gender was statistically analyzed by using a Pearson correlation and a Multiple regression was used to explore the predictive ability of psychological variables. In male students, the correlation analysis found motivation demonstrated a strong correlation to self-efficacy of (R=0.680, p < 0.01) with a Sig.value (0.000 < 0.05), motivation with language proficiency also demonstrated a strong correlation (R=0.735, p < 0.01) with a Sig. value (0.000 < 0.05), and self-efficacy and language proficiency revealed a strong correlation (R=0.662, p < 0.01) with a Sig. value (0.000 < 0.05). In female students, motivation is closely-related to self-efficacy with a sig. value (0.000 < 0.05) and showed a very strong correlation (R=0.831, p < 0.01), while motivation and language proficiency resulted a strong correlation (R=0.748, p < 0.01) with a Sig. value (0.000 < 0.05), and self-efficacy is also correlated strongly with language proficiency (R=0.692, p < 0.01). The regression model for both genders demonstrated that motivation and self-efficacy significantly predict language proficiency; for male students, the adjusted (R2= 57.1% > 0.33 or < 0.67), while for female students, the adjusted (R2= 53.3% > 0.33 or < 0.67). The results reveal that moderate levels of motivation and self-efficacy must have been associated with language proficiency. Undoubtedly, motivation and self-efficacy are moderate indicators to predict language proficiency in ELT. The study can assist English and non-English teachers, students, etc. to increase motivation and self-efficacy theories, gender pedagogies and classroom learning climate and student language achievement.

Abstract

The phenomenon of cyberloafing, where individuals engage in non-work-related online activities during productive hours, has become increasingly prevalent, particularly among students. This study investigates the impact of cyberloafing on students' learning processes, aiming to fill a research gap in understanding its effects on academic performance and classroom dynamics. A quantitative descriptive approach was employed to gather data through a questionnaire completed by 69 students selected via simple random sampling. To complement the quantitative data, qualitative insights were obtained from interviews with five randomly selected students. The survey explored the frequency and nature of cyberloafing activities, variables promoting such behavior, and its impacts. Analysis of the questionnaire data revealed that students engage in cyberloafing more frequently during classroom activities than during informational or leisure activities. Many students perceive cyberloafing as a means to alleviate classroom boredom. Interview findings indicated mixed outcomes: while some students reported reduced tension and boredom, others did not perceive any benefits and even noted a decline in productivity and focus. This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by highlighting the dual nature of cyberloafing's impact. While it can serve as a coping mechanism to mitigate boredom and stress, it also has the potential to detract from academic performance. Understanding these dynamics can help educators and policymakers develop strategies to manage cyberloafing, promoting a more balanced and productive learning environment.
