Abstract

The use of E-Modules is not new for educators; however, there remains a limited number of studies that specifically develop Flipbook-based interactive modules integrating local cultural values to enhance elementary students’ fiction writing skills. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of the interactive E-Module “Andum Alpukat” as a learning medium, employing a research and development (R&D) design that combines qualitative and quantitative approaches. The development process involved validation by material experts, module design experts, peer reviewers, and trials conducted individually, in small groups, and in large groups with fifth-grade students at SD Negeri Pulosari 1 Bareng Jombang. The findings reveal that the module received a feasibility score of 75% from material experts, 93.75% from design experts, 97.5% from peer reviewers, and 89.99% based on student responses. These results indicate that the “Andum Alpukat” interactive E-Module is both feasible and effective in improving students’ fiction writing skills. The study concludes that a modified Flipbook aligned with students’ learning needs can produce a high-quality and engaging instructional medium. The implications of this study suggest that similar modules have strong potential for broader implementation within Merdeka Curriculum–oriented classrooms and for fostering culturally grounded creativity in fiction writing to strengthen meaningful learning experiences.

Abstract

This study explores the impact of social media on the gender identity development of Generation Z, focusing on the opportunities and challenges these platforms present in shaping young people's understanding of gender. Generation Z, born between 1997 and 2012, is the first generation to grow up in an era of pervasive digital connectivity, where social media platforms offer unprecedented spaces for self-expression and identity exploration. These platforms enable young people to engage with diverse gender identities, including non-binary and gender-fluid expressions, which are often marginalized in offline spaces. However, while social media provides opportunities for authentic self-expression, it also amplifies societal pressures to conform to idealized gender norms. The tension between digital empowerment and offline societal expectations creates a complex environment for Generation Z, where they must navigate conflicting gender narratives. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing documentary analysis of social media content and academic literature to identify key themes related to gender identity formation, societal pressures, and the intersectionality of gender with cultural, social, and psychological factors. The findings suggest that, while social media plays a critical role in empowering young people to explore diverse gender expressions, it also exposes them to identity conflicts and psychological challenges, particularly when offline societal norms resist these new identities. The study calls for greater support systems, both online and offline, to help young people navigate these complexities and embrace their gender identities freely and authentically.

Abstract

Verbs are important component of syntax and play a crucial role on how learners express meaning, both orally and in writing. This study explores how Daouda’s song La femme de mon patron can be used as a practical tool for teaching French verbal structures to foreign language learners. The song was chosen because it contains a wide range of verbs, presented in clear and standard French, free from slang or dialectal forms that might confuse beginners. Through its simple yet culturally engaging lyrics, the song provides repeated exposure to verbs in declarative, conditional, and interrogative forms. The study demonstrates how teachers can use songs to enhance oral and written competence. Orally, students practice pronunciation, rhythm, and prosody in a natural context. In writing, the song enables activities such as verb identification, conjugation drills, and sentence transformation. The findings show that learners improved in verb identification with 80% accuracy and exhibited greater confidence in oral and written tasks. The study underscores the potential of integrating songs as structured grammar tools rather than supplementary activities. This study demonstrates that when carefully selected, songs can serve as instructional support for teaching verbs in foreign language classrooms compared to traditional grammar instruction. It concludes by proposing methodological guidelines for integrating songs into the teaching of verbal structures in French.

Abstract

This paper presents a pragmatic analysis of the social media discourses of Nigerians in the diaspora. The diaspora phenomenon has been a major theme of discussion and discourse on the African continent, and Nigeria presents a unique case. The paper employs a qualitative approach to attempt a pragmatic analysis of online discourses concerning Nigerians in the diaspora. The data were fifty (50) screenshots of posts by Nigerians in the diaspora sourced from Facebook and Twitter. The data were subjected to pragmatic analysis anchoring on Attribution theory to construe how Nigerian diasporic social media discourses are structured to project ascribing (attributing) justification for adulation and condemnation of Nigeria and their host countries. Findings reveal that Nigerians in the diaspora foreground condemnation of Nigeria as regards economic hardship, leadership failure, impunity and religious deceit and condemnation of the host countries in terms of racism practice, unfavourable weather, stress at work, scarcity of desired food items and unfavourable immigration laws. Adulation expressed about Nigeria concerns liveliness, local foods, communal life and cheap commodities while adulation about the host countries’ borders on availability of jobs, good standard of living, good leadership style, justice and access to quality social amenities. It is concluded that despite leaving Nigeria for other countries in search of a better life, Nigerians in the diaspora are not completely fulfilled as they still appreciate certain things and lifestyles about Nigeria wish they have no access to in their host countries and they express their dislike about their host countries which are communicated in their social media discourses. It is therefore concluded that there is no country that has all human needs and there is none that does not have anything desired.

Abstract

Oral tradition such as folklore that include storytelling has historically functioned as a dynamic medium for education, social commentary, social reflection in African societies. This tradition is observed to have been adopted in contemporary African literary writers. While acknowledging that not all African literature uniformly engages with oral tradition in didactic ways, this research examines the extent to which Head’s story The Collector of Treasures acts as a vehicle for social critique and educational enlightenment. Thus, the specific objectives of this study are: i) explore how storytelling functions as a vehicle for social reflection by identifying and critically examining the social issues reflected on in the text; and ii) examine the pedagogical value storytelling provides amidst modern education by analysing the educational insights conveyed through storytelling in the text. The study adopts a qualitative research approach and applies the thematic and interpretive analytical technique. Findings from the analysis show that Head’s story provides reflection on social issues specifically gender-based violence, reproductive coercion, the collapse of family structure and the moral failure of formal education and institutional authorities within the postcolonial contexts. It prompts call for critical reflection on whether traditional and existing social practices, personal behaviour, and societal norms promote values such as responsibility, equity, compassion, justice, and recognises the invaluable role of women. Furthermore, the text educates on the emotional and social consequences of abuse, the value of women’s empowerment through work and education, the importance of love and mutual respect in in human relationships and responsibility. This study concludes that Bessie head effectively adapts the communal, reflective, and instructive functions of oral storytelling to the written form. The study recommends integration of such literary texts in formal educational framework, re-evaluation of the purpose of formal education, and support for women economic empowerment.

Abstract

Speaking anxiety is a major challenge for students learning English as a foreign language. It often arises from fear of making mistakes, limited vocabulary, poor pronunciation, and the pressure of being judged. This study explores how English Education students at Mulawarman University experience and manage speaking anxiety. Using a qualitative design with semi-structured interviews involving three participants, data were analyzed thematically to identify patterns in causes, triggers, and coping strategies. The findings reveal that anxiety is most intense during formal tasks such as presentations or spontaneous questioning. Students adopt strategies like self-practice, note preparation, breathing techniques, self-recording, and peer support to reduce anxiety. These approaches gradually enhance confidence and improve speaking performance. The study concludes that emotional and instructional support from teachers and peers significantly reduces anxiety levels. Implications suggest that educators should foster supportive classroom environments and integrate reflective speaking practices to help students overcome fear and participate actively in English communication.

Abstract

This paper examines how romantic tone is carried across languages in film subtitling, where text must be brief, well-timed, and easy to read. We focus on Dilan 1990, a popular Indonesian teen romance known for playful, indirect lines that rely on inference and rhythm. Today, many studios generate first-pass subtitles with neural machine translation and then rely on human post-editors to refine style and timing. We ask how well AI handles this kind of subtle, affect-rich dialogue and where human editing still adds value. We compare 24 well-known lines addressed by Dilan to Milea in two versions: the official English subtitles and outputs produced by ChatGPT under the same line-level constraints. Using a practical set of translation techniques (e.g., modulation, compression, adaptation) and a tone rubric (playfulness/coyness, warmth, persona/rhythm), we perform a line-by-line analysis. The human subtitles tend to keep implicature and pace through concise, idiomatic choices that fit character and reading speed. The AI versions are fluent but more likely to explain subtext or lengthen the line, which can blunt teasing and shift the scene’s mood. AI can match human choices when the source line is already compact and direct. Where meaning depends on ellipsis, metaphor, and micro-timing, human post-editing remains crucial. We close with practical guidelines for NMT-plus-post-editing workflows in romance subtitling.

Abstract

The quality of news translation has a significant impact on global understanding and communication, especially in an era of rapid information exchange and international media consumption. Speeches by high-profile figures, such as presidents, monarchs, and public figures, carry substantial international importance. As one of the leading news portals, CNN Indonesia plays a vital role in translating such content; however, its quality has not been thoroughly examined. This study adopts a qualitative descriptive approach using a comparative conceptual method to analyze source and target texts. It applies Vinay and Darbelnet’s (1995) translation procedure theory and Nababan, Ardiana Nuraeni, and Sumardiono’s (2012) translation quality assessment model. Findings reveal that transposition is the most frequently used procedure (66%), followed by modulation and literal translation (13%) each. Correspondingly, the overall TQA score is 2.35 out of 3, comprising accuracy at 2.19, acceptability at 2.44, and readability at 2.71. These results indicate that while the translation achieves a high level of readability and acceptability, there remains room for improvement in accuracy to fully capture the nuances of the source text. This study contributes to translation studies by demonstrating how Vinay and Darbelnet’s procedures can inform effective linguistic and cultural strategies to enhance translation accuracy and comprehension. By emphasizing the role of strategic linguistic and cultural adaptation, the study offers practical insights for improving translation quality in journalistic contexts, particularly in political and ceremonial speeches.

Abstract

This study approaches Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper” from a feminist-psychoanalytic perspective, examining how the act of writing serves as a mode of resistance for a woman silenced by patriarchal and medical authority. Through a close textual analysis informed by Freudian psychoanalytic concepts, the paper examines how Gilman constructs a psychological portrait of female confinement and rebellion. The narrator’s descent into madness is interpreted as both a symptom of the patriarchal suppression of female desire and an unconscious revolt against it. Gilman’s use of symbolism—the yellow wallpaper, the barred windows, and the creeping woman- encodes the internalisation of patriarchal control and the protagonist’s struggle to reclaim her identity. The study also examines the gendered power dynamics between the female protagonist and her husband, a physician, situating the story within the broader social and cultural context of nineteenth-century America. In effect, this paper argues that Gilman transforms “The Yellow Wallpaper” [3] into a timeless work of psychological and feminist insight, showing how literature can illuminate the human mind and the structures that shape it.
