Abstract

Many students struggle with writing in English due to linguistic challenges such as morphology and syntax. This research aimed at discovering the morpho-syntactic errors that EFL students did and the most dominant error in the fifth-semester students in the English Education Study Program at Tadulako University. The researcher used descriptive quantitative method as the design of the research to analyze common morpho-syntactic error in on the students’ writings and to discover the errors and the most dominant errors made by students. The participants of this research were 145 students which chosen using simple random sampling where the researcher picked sample members from a population at random, without worrying about different groups or layers within that population. Data for this study were gathered through tests and the researcher analyzed using Dulay’s linguistic category taxonomy. The results of the study showed that errors are found at both morphological and syntactical levels. The morphological level included pronoun error, quantifier error, and inflectional error. Meanwhile, the syntactical level included tense error, infinitive error, auxiliary verb error and subject-verb agreement error. However, from all those errors, the most dominant error was pronoun error with the total number of errors was 504 in frequency. It implied that students lacked of understanding the use of pronouns in sentences. The research findings have important implications for both pedagogical approach and linguistic competence. For pedagogical approach, the insights help students understand and correct common grammar errors, improving their writing skills and boosting their confidence. In terms of linguistic competence, the findings highlight EFL students' development in morphology and syntax, enabling them to construct grammatically correct sentences and master complex language structures.

Abstract

The ceasefire proposal between Israel and Palestine shocked the world's residents because of the pros and cons of several related parties. Israel and Hamas as the target parties showed different responses to the proposal agreement presented by President Biden in his speech. So, this research is certainly considered interesting because it concerns the most important world phenomenon that has succeeded in shaking the global community. This research uses a qualitative method that aims to describe and analyze the discourse on this ceasefire proposal with the reactions of certain parties as stated in the Al-Arabiya news text based on Teun van Dijk's critical discourse analysis through the text dimension. The results showed the following data findings: 1) macrostructure (theme); 2) superstructure (scheme) includes summary (title and lead) and story (comment and situation); 3) microstructure four studies include semantic (background, detail, intent, presupposition, and nominalization), syntax (sentence form, coherence, and pronoun), stylistic (lexicon), and rhetoric (graphic, metaphor, and expression). The three structures have various elements with their characteristics to form the entire discourse content cohesively and relate to each other. Especially in the title and lead of the discourse, Al-Arabiya journalists have indirectly summarized the responses of those who accept or reject President Biden's statement after understanding the news content.

Abstract

A novel possess a high level of complexity, including their portrayal of social dynamics. The complexity of novels is evident in their narrative structures, the characterization of characters with psychological depth and diverse backgrounds, the dynamics presented within the story, and the messages conveyed by the author. Therefore, this study investigates the social dynamics reflected in the novel *Gadis Kretek* by Ratih Kumala, focusing on social change, gender equality, and family conflicts within Indonesian society in the 1930s. The novel provides an in-depth depiction of the development of the kretek industry in Indonesia, a sector that flourished rapidly after Dutch colonization, as well as the struggle of women to find space in a male-dominated business world. The character Jeng Yah, who plays a pivotal role in kretek production, symbolizes the struggles of women confronting social and cultural limitations to prove their capabilities. Using a qualitative approach that emphasizes analysis of characters, plot, and setting, this study uncovers the tension between traditional values and modernity, as well as how changes in the kretek industry reflect significant shifts in social class. The research also explores the impact of social changes on human interactions, particularly in the context of family relationships and individual struggles to preserve their values and identities. Overall, this study provides an in-depth understanding of how the novel reflects the social, economic, and cultural transformations occurring in Indonesian society, as well as its relevance to contemporary social issues that remain significant today.

Abstract

Pachinko (2022) is an American series produced and aired by Apple TV+ portraying generations of Zainichi trying to settle in Japan after their displacement from Japan-Occupied Korea that at the same time shows how American ideology as colonial contagion spread within the people. The act of mimicry displayed in the film’s narratology, production process, and additional intrinsic elements that differ from its novel version, Pachinko (2017), makes this series tend to become something ambivalent and lack a definite position—as if it gets recolonized after being free on its own. Other than that, dynamics during the Japanese occupation, whose practices are primarily inspired by the U.S., can be seen as setting the standard for ongoing life. By observing the series with film narratology including Verstraten’s (2009) mise en scene and focalization linked with theories surrounding the topic of postcolonialism, diaspora from forced migration, and the tendency to imitate or mimic, how the image of the U.S. wants to be built throughout the series can be identified. Moreover, focus on the theory of Bhabha’s (1994) mimicry will help to see how the production tries to make Zainichi seems to ‘put effort’ to be as similar as American. This series, as one of modern media platforms delivered into a private area, acts as the contagion transmitter with having the narrative form sick and infect the contagion within it towards the audience. With that, this research aims to analyze these forms of ‘contagion’ and the attempt at recolonization done by Americans which makes the contribution to the postcolonial discourse is to dissect this ‘new way’ of recolonization. Therefore, this research argues that forms of colonial contagion persist into the postcolonial era, perpetuated due to the obsession with gaining American recognition as a global center.

Abstract

Reading comprehension is a crucial skill for students, yet many face challenges due to limited vocabulary and ineffective reading strategies. This study investigates the effectiveness of the Question-Answer Relationship (QAR) strategy in enhancing reading comprehension among eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 15 Sigi. Utilizing a quasi-experimental design, the research involved an experimental group receiving QAR-based instruction and a control group following conventional methods. Data were gathered through pre-tests and post-tests and analyzed using SPSS version 22. The results revealed that the experimental group achieved a significantly higher post-test mean score (69.57) compared to the control group (58.83), with an independent sample t-test value of 0.018 (p < 0.05). These findings confirm that the QAR strategy effectively improves reading comprehension by assisting students in categorizing and responding to questions more accurately. The strategy not only enhances comprehension but also fosters critical thinking and increases student engagement during reading activities. Consequently, teachers are encouraged to incorporate the QAR strategy into their reading instruction to promote deeper understanding and improve academic outcomes. By integrating QAR, educators can support students in developing more effective reading strategies, ultimately leading to improved literacy skills and learning success.

Abstract

In higher education in Algeria, assessment in the English as a Foreign Language classroom remains a contentious issue, as educators continue to express skepticism towards the adoption of the new assessment paradigm. In this regard, stakeholders successfully implemented alternate evaluation methods to evaluate students' performance more accurately. This research aims to investigate the importance of genuine assessment, specifically peer evaluation, in the EFL writing classroom. A quantitative technique was used for the research, including a survey delivered to a randomly chosen sample of forty (40) EFL students at ENS of Laghouat. The study used descriptive statistics and regression analysis. The results confirmed that most students possess favorable attitudes towards peer assessment, as it enhances their self-reflection by incorporating real-life experiences and providing them with a degree of control over their learning through tasks, thereby fostering greater responsibility and independence in their learning process. Students may encounter challenges when participating in peer assessment in their writing classroom. However, they have the capacity for self-regulation and can develop greater awareness and responsibility for their own learning.

Abstract

This study examines the formation of self-identity in the main character of the Sri Asih Webtoon by Archie the RedCat and Devita Krisant, focusing on three key stages: the real, imaginary, and symbolic. Using Jacques Lacan's social identity theory as the theoretical framework, this research aims to explore how Alana’s identity evolves through these stages. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method, with data collected through library research, reading, listening, and note-taking. The analysis centers on the Webtoon’s narrative, specifically examining the development of Alana's self-identity.The findings reveal that Alana’s self-identity progresses from confusion and self-doubt to complete understanding and acceptance of her role as Sri Asih. In the real stage, Alana lacks self-recognition and awareness of her abilities (Episodes 3, 5, and 18). During the imaginary stage, she begins to associate herself with Sri Asih’s strengths but remains uncertain of her full potential (Episodes 8, 13, and 30). At the symbolic stage, Alana achieves a holistic understanding and acceptance of her identity as Sri Asih (Episodes 14 and 21). This study offers valuable insights into the complex process of self-identity formation, contributing to the broader fields of literary analysis and identity studies. By analyzing Alana’s journey, the study underscores the psychological and narrative mechanisms that shape individual identity in modern storytelling, with implications for understanding character development and identity construction in various media.

Abstract

Poetry is different from other genres of literature, such as prose and drama. The difference lies in the language used in poetry, which is usually multi-interpretive, metaphorical, and ambiguous. This ambiguity of poetry creates different interpretations, if read and perceived by different readers. Therefore, this study aims to describe Michael Riffaterre’s semiotics to the poem “Syaiun Sayabqa Bainana” by Faruq Juwaidah. This research methode is descriptive qualitative which the data and studies are based on various sources, then analyzed using Riffaterre’s theory by looking at the indirecyness of xcpressions, reading heuristic and hermeneutic, models, variants, matrices, and hypogram, which revealed that the holistic meaning of this poem. The research findings show that the poem Syaiun Sayabqa Bainana means longing, namely longing for the tranquility of life in a world full of sadness and suffering. Then through models and variants in the form of words, phrases, and sentences, the matrix is found to be the search for tranquility, through doubts and beliefs and a world full of suffering and materialism, although in the end everything is ephemeral. The potential hypogram of this poem is Faruq Juwaidah's criticism of the social and political upheaval in Egypt. And the actual hypogram is the poem “Ila Habibti” by Nizar Qabbani.

Abstract

This study investigates the ongoing shift of the Belait language in Brunei and its impact on identity renegotiation among its speakers. The research examines socio-political, cultural, and cognitive factors contributing to language attrition, particularly the dominance of Dialek Melayu Brunei and English. Using qualitative methods, including in-depth interviews and observations, data were analyzed through a sociocognitive framework to explore how Belait speakers navigate linguistic and cultural changes. Findings indicate that intra-marriage plays a crucial role in language preservation, fostering intergenerational transmission and reinforcing cultural identity. Conversely, mixed marriages accelerate the shift toward dominant languages, diminishing the use of Belait within households. Socio-political pressures, including language policies that prioritize Malay and English in education and administration, further marginalize Belait, limiting its functional domains. Additionally, economic influences, such as increased labor migration, contribute to the preference for dominant languages in professional settings. Despite these challenges, community-driven efforts, including familial language practices and cultural initiatives, demonstrate resilience in preserving linguistic heritage. The study highlights the urgent need for comprehensive language policies, educational inclusion, and institutional support to revitalize the Belait language. Addressing structural and attitudinal barriers is essential to sustaining linguistic diversity and strengthening cultural identity within Brunei’s evolving multilingual landscape.
