Abstract

This study aims at finding out the students’ grammatical competence in speaking skills especially in the use of simple present tense at SMA Muhammadiyah 3 Makassar. The method of this research was Descriptive Quantitative Method. Data of the research were collected through speaking test. The sample of this research was class XI IPA 3 from SMA Muhammadiyah 3 Makassar. The sample was taken by using Purposive Sampling Technique.Based on the results of the research, it was found that the students’ grammar competence in speaking skill in of XI IPA of SMA Muhammadiyah 3 Makassar is categorized into poor level. It was found that the students are difficult to form the sentence well and to arrange correct sentence when speaking. It was based on the result of test given dealing with the classification of students’ score.

Abstract

This study aimed at finding out how the students' skills in using subject-verb agreement in writing essays. This research method is descriptive quantitative method. The research data was collected through the writing test as an instrument. The sample of this research was the fifth-semester students of English Education at the Alauddin State Islamic University of Makassar. The sample was taken by using simple random sampling. Based on the analysis and discussion about this research, the researcher concluded the researcher concluded that the students' ability to use the subject-verb agreement in the fifth semester students of English Education at the Alauddin State Islamic University of Makassar was categorized into very good level with a score was 88.24. This value is obtained based on the results of the scores of all students that are divided into the number of students who are the samples of this study. From 35 students, there were 7 students whose mastery levels were excellent, 16 students gained a very good level, 8 students whose mastery levels were good, 3 students gained a good level, 1 student gained a fair level, and no student gained a poor level. Moreover, the last level is very poor and no student gained this level.

Abstract

This research aimed to know whether the use of Word Clap game gave effect or not for the students in learning vocabulary to the 7th grade at SMPN 1 Kajuara.The researcher used a Pre-Experimental Research with one group Pretest and Posttest design which consisted of eight meeting included the treatments. The data of the students’ vocabularies were taken from Pretest and Posttest. The population of the research was the seventh grade students of SMPN1 Kajuara consist of 8 classes, the total of number of sample were 20 students in class 7C and the sample was taken by using purposive sampling technique. The data was obtained by matching the words test. The research findings showed that the seventh Grade students of SMPN 1 Kajuara had poor score in Pretest. After treatment, their vocabulary mastery increased significantly. The students ‘mean score in word meaning as subject were 41.75 in Pretest and become 76.10 in Posttest. The result of hypothesis testing of this research was (Sig (2-tailed) was 0.000, because of Sig < α (0.000 < 0.05), it can be concluded that Pretest and Posttest has sig < α, and H1 was accepted and H0 was rejected. It means that it had been significance by using Word Clap Game for students ‘vocabulary mastery. The student’s development their vocabulary is 82%. It is supported by the value of t-test that is bigger than the value of t-table (36.422>2.093). It was concluded that the use of Word Clap Game was effective to improve the students ‘vocabularies.

Abstract

This research aimed to finding out whether or not the use of Double Brain Power Method in improving the reading skill. The research in terms of finding the student that focus on level of literal and interpretative the improvement of students’ ability by using Improving The Students’ Reading Skill Through Double Brain Power Method’ at the second grade students’ of SMA YPPP Wonomulyo.The research used Classroom Action Research (CAR) as the method of the research. The researcher conducted two cycles, where each cycle consisted of four meetings. The researcher did the classroom action research at class XI IPA 2 of SMA YPPP Wonomulyo. The subjects of this research were 30 students. The research findings showed that second grade students’ in SMA YPPP Wonomulyo was improvement from cycle I to cycle II. The students’ improvement in literal comprehension through Double Brain Power Method It indicated that there was significant improvement of the students’ reading comprehension from the diagnostic test to cycle I and cycle II, where in the diagnostic test the students’ mean score was 4.55, but after the evaluation test in cycle I, it was become 6.03. So the improvement of the students’ achievement from diagnostic test to cycle I was 34.15. There was also significant improve from cycle I to cycle II where the students’ mean score in cycle II was 8.53. The improvement of the students’ mean score from cycle I to cycle II was 41.46. From these findings, the researcher made conclusion that by using double brain power method could improve the students’ reading skills achievement and make the students’ active in learning process.

Abstract

The aimed of this research was to find out the improve of students’ speaking ability by using Mobile Video Task that focused on students’ fluency at the Eleventh Grade of SMKN 1 Kempo. The researcher used Pre-experimental Design with one group pre-test and post-test, and data collection based on the test. The sample of this research was class XI which consisted of 20 students. The sample was taken by using Purposive Sampling Technique. The research findings showed that the students’ difference before and after using mobile video task was significantly different. The students’ pre-test mean score in term of fluency was 65.15 to be 75.45 in post-test. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that mobile video task technique was effective to improve the speaking ability of the students at the Eleventh Grade of SMKN1 Kempo in the Academic Year 2020/2021.

Abstract

This research aimed to found what types of cohesion that commonly used by the English department students of University of Muhammadiyah Makassar in their descriptive text and to find out how is the students ability in making their text coherence. This research used descriptive research. Purposive sampling technique was applied to select the sample. The population of this sample was the third semester students of English department in Muhammdiyah University of Makassar. The number of sample was one class that is consists of 13 students. The data obtained by giving a writing test to the student. The research findings showed that the students used 82% reference in their descriptive text and followed by conjunction in 15.1% , while ellipsis and substitution only 1.21% used by the student. Thus, 41% students already in a good level of writing ability even there are still some mistakes and followed by 33% of student already got out standing level that means they already can make their text correctly coherence and there are 23% students still need to improved their skill so they can make their text coherence.

Abstract

This research method is descriptive qualitative. In compiling the data, the researcher conducted interviews and observations. In this study, 42 third-semester students of the Department of English Education at the Alauddin State Islamic University in Makassar were the research subjects. In addition, four students were interviewed, and 42 students were observed during the speaking class.The results showed that: 1) There are several classifications of cognitive strategies used by students in learning to speak, namely practicing, receiving and sending messages, analyzing and reasoning, and structuring input and output. In practice, students use repetition, apply rules of pronunciation, rules of grammar are too seldom used. Then, during receiving and sending messages, students need to think for a moment before giving their ideas. Next during receiving and sending messages, students need to think for a minute before providing their idea. Furthermore, while the strategy of analyzing and reasoning, students apply to analyze expressions, translating, and contrasting what they learn. The final cognitive strategy is to create structures for input and output. Students usually get notes and shorten the material. 2) Cognitive strategies have a positive effect on students' speaking performance

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the types of errors of the third semester students of English department at Muhammadiyah University of Makassar in using the infinitive and to find out the cause of the errors. In this study, the researcher used descriptive qualitative method in term of percentages. In collecting data, the researcher used writing test and interview as the research instrument. The result of this study to determine the types of errors of students in using infinitive showed that the total errors of the students in using infinitive were 63 errors. This error consists of two types of errors, namely omission and addition. In omission, there are 33 errors or 50, 77%, while in addition there are 30 errors or 46, 16%. As for the cause of the students’ errors in using infinitive, some students no not understand and do not even know what the infinitive means and the function of the infinitive.

Abstract

This research is aimed to determine the kinds of English Intonation used by students when reading aloud. This research was descriptive qualitative. The population were 20 students at the third semester students of English Education Department in UNISMUH Makassar. The instrument used reading text and recording.The result showed that the English intonation used by students when reading aloud a text was very different and varied and the intonation they used was not only rising and falling intonation but also rising falling intonation in some word. Good and correct intonation is very influential on the comfort and for hearing easy to get the meaning of a text.

Abstract

This study intended to investigate (1) The kinds of Reward used by teacher to motivate the students in learning English at UPT SMP Negeri 2 Baranti, (2) The kinds of punishment used by teacher to motivate the students in learning English at UPT SMP Negeri 2 Baranti, (3) The obstacles faced by teacher in motivating students using reward and punishment. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. One of English teacher who teaches in the 8th grade was a participant in this study. The data obtained through an interview consisting of 35 questions, 17 questions about reward and 18 questions about punishment. The Data analysis was carried out by reducing the data, then presenting the data, and after that drawing conclusions and verification. The results have shown that the kinds of reward used by teacher are praise, respect, and sign of appreciation, while the kinds of punishment used by teacher are punishment by action, punishment by word, and corporal punishment. In addition, the obstacles faced by teacher in applying reward was sometimes teacher made mistakes in giving rewards to students causing students protest, while the obstacles that faced by teachers in giving punishment were sometimes difficult determining who was the student who committed the offense, students did not do the punishment well, and students did not pay attention what the teacher said when only given reprimand and if giving punishment too harsh is not allowed
