Abstract

The purposes of this research were to determine levels, causes, and solution of students’ speaking anxiety in EFL classroom. This research used a mixed-method research. The researchers chose the class of eleventh grade students of senior high school 5 Makassar. The instruments to collect the data were FLCAS questionnaire and semi-structured interview. The results of this research showed that most of the students at “mildly anxious” level with 16 respondents. There are 3 respondents who have “very anxious” level, 11 respondents have “anxious” level, and the last 5 respondents are in “relaxed” level. The researchers found there are five causes which are found by the researchers in this research, they are: fear of mistakes, lack of self-confidence, limited vocabulary, negative evaluation from teacher or friend, and embarrassment (afraid of being laughed). This research also showed that there are six solutions which are found by the researchers in this research, they are: using English websites, watching English films, speaking with native speakers, positive thinking, memorizing more English vocabulary, and others (calm down and ignoring the people).

Abstract

This study explores the students' skill to write argumentative using short animated stories at the Faculty of Language and Literature, especially in the English Education SL semester of 2019. Twenty-nine (29) students were selected as the research sample. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The data collected is an interview. The results showed there is no students belonging to the effective skill level, 3 students belonging to the well-developed skill level, 7 students belonging to the moderate skill level, 11 students belonging to the developing skill level, then 8 students belonging to the weak skill level, and finally there are no students classified into the no skill level. Thus, it can be concluded that the level of developing skills is the category most achieved with 11 students and followed by the weak skill level with 8 students.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to determine the perceptions of English education students regarding their English skills during online learning and face-to-face learning. The research was conducted at the faculty of language and literature, majoring in English Education. The population in this research were students of English language education class 2020. The instruments used in this research were interviews and documentation. Based on the results of the research, researchers found that students' perceptions of online learning and face-to-face learning, face-to-face learning became the preferred choice as a better learning system to improve the effectiveness of students' English skills.

Abstract

The research aims to describe and find out the way of lecturer used weekly quizzes in EFL classroom. This research used qualitative methods. The population in this study was the lecturer and the 3rd year students of English Education Study Program in Universitas Negeri Makassar. The instrument of the research was observation. The sample for this research consists of 1 (one) lecturer of English Education Department at State University of Makassar. The result of the research found that the use of weekly quizzes in EFL classroom it can be a tool to determine and measure students' understanding of the material that has been taught previously.

Abstract

This study aims to determine students' perceptions of English learning media used by their teachers during the covid-19 pandemic. The researchers applied descriptive qualitative method to achieve the research objectives. The data collected were in the form of questionnaires and interviews. The subjects of this study were students of SMPN 1 Tarowang. The population used in this study is class VIII consisting of four classes and using 5 samples for each class using random sampling where the total sample is 20 students. Based on the findings and discussion of the previous chapter, the researchers conclude the Students' perceptions of the use of WhatsApp group media in online English learning at SMPN 1 Tarowang have many positive perceptions. This is supported by questionnaires and interviews which show that many students have positive perceptions in their responses. Of the several themes found, two of them are included in positive perceptions, namely flexibility and affective. Perception of using WhatsApp group media explained that WhatsApp group was an easily accessible medium and almost all students already understood its use. Meanwhile, according to students, zoom meetings have features that are not so easy to understand. WhatsApp media and zoom meetings should be used in schools that have easy internet access or in schools located close to the city.

Abstract

The objectives of this paper were to see if using Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) for vocabulary instruction was helpful or not. The objective of this research was to determine whether there is any correlation between language learning strategies and thinking styles on learning outcomes of senior high school students in the eleventh-grade academic year 2021-2022 at SMA Negeri 2 Majene. This study is quantitative research, using survey research. The population in this study was 185 students. The researchers use random sampling in this study. The total sample that took part in this study was 50 students. Techniques for gathering information include spreading using questionnaires. Data were analyzed by correlating analysis using SPSS 25. The results showed that the Correlation Between Language Learning Strategies and Thinking Styles on Learning Outcomes of Senior High School Students in the Eleventh Grades of the Academic year 2021-2022 at SMA 2 Majene was a positive significant correlation. The conclusion, there is a considerable correlation between language learning strategies and thinking styles, and this relationship has a favorable influence on student learning outcomes.

Abstract

This study tried to find out whether the use of English cartoon Films was able to enrich the vocabulary of the students. The method used was pre-experimental which involved one group pretest and posttest design. The population was the third-year students of SLTPN 1 BULUKUMPA, and the sample consisted of 30 students taken randomly from six classes. The instrument used was a vocabulary test. To analyze the data, a t-test was used. The mean score of the pretest is 4.94 and the post-test is 7.30. The result of the t-test analysis shows that the value of the t-test (13.07) is greater than the value of the t-table (2.045) at the level of significance .0S with a degree of freedom 29. It means that there is a significant difference between the result of the students’ pretest and the posttest. It is concluded that the use of cartoon film is an effective medium to improve the vocabulary command of the students of SLTPN 1 BULUKUMPA.

Abstract

This research aims to describe and find out the two following objects: (1) the English teachers' online teaching strategies, and (2) The strategies help the teachers’ in online teaching. This research used Qualitative model. The instrument collecting data were online class observation and interview. In order to get the sample, the researchers used random sampling technique. There were 3 English teachers in SMAN 5 Makassar as the sample of this research. The results of the research indicated that (1) teachers used cooperative learning and discovery-based learning in online teaching during the Covid-19 pandemic era. (2) Cooperative learning and discovery-based learning can help teachers teach. Cooperative learning strategies help the teachers in teaching English because the students can know about the importance of group study. Discovery-based learning strategies help the teacher in teaching English because with the students can more explore knowledge in another resources. According to the results of the research, it can be concluded that the teacher’s strategies in online teaching during the pandemic there are Cooperative learning and Discovery Based Learning.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to find out the students' perception on the use of WhatsApp in learning EFL During covid 19 at remote area (Study at SMPN 11 Selayar Island South Sulawesi). The researchers applied mixed method (quantitative and qualitative) research design. The data of this research were collected through questionnaire and interview. The subjects of this study were students of SMPN 11 Selayar. The sample of the questionnaire was 50 students and Interviews of eight students were taken using purposive sampling technique. The results of data analysis showed that (1) positive student perceptions on the use of WhatsApp in learning EFL during Covid-19 at remote area with the classification, 7(14%) students classified Strongly positive, 38 (76%) students classified Positive, 4(8%) students were classified as Medium, 1 (2%) student were classified as Negative and not there are students who were classified as strongly negative. (2) Student explanations in interviews regarding the perception on the use of WhatsApp in learning EFL during Covid-19 at remote area explained that WhatsApp is a good online learning tool because WhatsApp has good features that really support EFL learning in this pandemic era. Even though there is a pandemic, students can still learn EFL through WhatsApp because in WhatsApp students and teachers can still interact and discuss well.

Abstract

This research aims (1) to determine the level of students' vocabulary mastery before and after being taught using the S&T method (2) to find out whether using the S&T method further improves students' vocabulary. This is in accordance with the hypothesis which states that the use of the Show and Tell (S&T) method improve students' vocabulary. The design used in this study is a pre-experimental, which is One Group Pretest-Posttest design with the sample is from class X IPS 2, which consists of 16 students and using cluster random sampling technique. In obtaining the data, the researchers used the test as an instrument. The results of data analysis showed that by using the Show and Tell (S&T) method, students' vocabulary mastery improved. It can be proven by the t-test value of -27.547 which is less than the t-table value of 2.602, which means that H0 of this research was rejected and H1 was accepted. So, it can be concluded that the use of the Show and Tell (S&T) method improve students' vocabulary at the first-grade students of SMA Negeri 6 Toraja Utara.
