Abstract

The research aims to describe and find out the three following objects: (1) the teachers’ paralanguage forms used by teachers in EFL classroom, (2) the way the teachers use their paralanguage in EFL classroom, (3) the impacts of teachers’ paralanguage toward EFL students’ learning motivation. This research used mix method (the QUAL-Quan model). The instruments used in collecting the data were classroom observation, questionnaire and interview. In order to get the sample, the researchers used purposive sampling. There were 2 English teachers and 60 students from two different classes in eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Polewali as the sample of this research. The result of the research showed that teachers used paralanguage which consists of body language and voice tone while teaching in the classroom. The used of paralanguage by the teachers are different in the certain things like movement or posture. The teachers’ paralanguage has positive impact in the teaching-learning process and helped students understand better the content taught. According to the results of the research, it can be concluded that the teachers’ paralanguage during teaching and learning process made students to be motivated to learn, focused their attention to the teachers’ explanations, and made them confidence in participating the learning process. Hence, it is obvious that teachers’ paralanguage is crucial elements to use well by the teachers because it gives contribution to encourage EFL students’ learning motivation.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine students’ perception of teacher talk in English teaching learning process in the fifth semester at English education study program during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research is quantitative research, using survey research. The population in this study were 172 students from class A, B, C, D, and class Pare-Pare who used voluntary sampling. Data collection techniques through the distribution of questionnaires. Data were analyzed by descriptive analysis. The results showed that student’s perception of teacher talk in the teaching and learning process of Fifth Semesters at English Education Study Program during COVID-19 Pandemic was in positive classification. The conclusion, students were enthusiastic with the Teacher Talk that applied by the teacher in English Teaching learning Process.

Abstract

The activity of reading is very important because with reading students get new words in learning English, especially in writing, speaking, and listening. And also Reading skills teach students how to pronounce the words of the sentence in the text. With reading, students can understand the existing conditions and situations. The student also will do some activities by reading in every place, reading some words, and sentences or passages. By reading, students will get the information, knowledge, and idea. Reading is also having important in education, especially in teaching and learning processes. Nowadays teachers usually teach reading only gives the clue or material point related to the material.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out the perceptions of SMA IT Wahdah Islamiyah Makassar’s Teachers and Students about Critical Thinking in the learning process. The researcher used a qualitative method. The population of this research are 120 students from four classes, which are XI IPA 3, XI IPA 2, XII IPA 3 and XI IPS 2 in academic year 2020-2021, also 2 English teachers at SMA IT Wahdah Islamiyah. The sample for this research is 39 students that were selected purposively by filling out questionnaires and providing opinions and examples of critical thinking that they know, so that the results of the questionnaire can be used to see their basic knowledge about critical thinking, it is intended that the sample who conducts an interview has an idea or basic knowledge about critical thinking. This study use interview to support the research and technique of data analysis by Miles and Huberman. The result of data analysis showed that English teachers’ perceptions about critical thinking is that critical thinking are the ability to make a summary, give opinion, evaluate the information and also the ability to think rationally about what to do/believe the information/ideas. While students’ perceptions about critical thinking are that critical thinking are thinking logically, confirming, and validating the correctness of an information, and the ability to solve a problem. Teachers’ perceptions of students’ ability to think critically can be seen from the activities that occur in the classroom and factors that become problems for students in thinking critically in the classroom. Students’ perceptions of their ability to think critically can be seen from their role in applying critical thinking in the classroom. Teachers' perceptions of their role in integrating critical thinking in the lesson is encouraging students to make questions or give conclusions from the material that provided by the teacher. Students’ perceptions of their role in integrating critical thinking in the lesson can be seen from two categories, such as the problem that the students faced when they are trying to think critically in the classroom and the classroom situation. The statements above are supported by the results of in-depth interviews through focus group discussion.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to determine whether or not the use of short stories is effective in teaching reading comprehension of narrative text to the first-year students of SMK Negeri Campalagian. This research used cluster random sampling with 25 students of class X TKJ (Teknik Komputer dan Jaringan). This research used a pre-experimental design consisting of two cycles, namely pre-test, and post-test. The data was obtained through a reading comprehension test which consisted of 30 questions that aimed to determine students’ ability to comprehend a text. In analyzing the data, the researchers used a t-test to find out whether there was a significant difference before and after students were given treatment using short stories. The results of statistic calculations showed a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test. This was indicated by the t-test value which is greater than the t-table value (26.796>1.711). Based on the result, it can be obtained that the use of short stories is effective in teaching reading comprehension of narrative text to the first-year students of SMK Negeri Campalagian.

Abstract

Kahoot! is a game-based learning (GBL) platform and used to know students’ knowledge, for formative assessment or as a break from traditional and monotonous classroom activities. The aim of this research was to investigated whether there is students’ positive perspective and significant effect after used of Kahoot! on students’ vocabulary mastery for elementary students. Many studies have been published on the effect of using Kahoot! in the classroom activities. This research presents the result of a literature review on the effect of using Kahoot! for learning, specifically on students’ perspective and learning process. The literature review includes 220 studies, but it’s including duplicated journals that did not match with the inclusion criteria were excluded. The 15 studies used and found out that after the use of Kahoot! students’ and teachers have a positive perspective and it shows the significant effect on learning vocabulary mastery. However, there are also some studies where the use of Kahoot! Has little or no significant effect. The most challenges mentioned by students’ commonly the technical issue such as unreliable internet connection, stressful time pressure when they try to find the answers some students’ have failing quiz experience and teachers’ find it challenging to deal and work together with the technology.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the anxiety of EFL students in oral presentation in thesis examinations. The researchers employed qualitative research with a case study approach. Seven experienced EFL students have participated and the researchers employed a thematic analysis technique to analyze the data. The findings revealed that all EFL students are anxious in oral presentation in thesis examination, those are facilitative anxiety and debilitative anxiety. Students are categorized as facilitative anxiety when students are self-confident and studying beforehand while students are categorized as debilitative anxiety when they feel tense, worried, scared, nervous, self-doubt, blank, and tremble.

Abstract

This study aimed to discover whether the use of film stories could improve students’ ability in writing narrative text. The method of the research was pre-experimental with one group pretest and posttest design. The population of the study was 11th Grade students of Senior High School MA DDI Kanang, West Sulawesi in the 2021/2022 academic year. Twenty-five (25) students were selected as samples of the study using a random sampling technique. The instrument of this research was a writing test which was administered as a pretest and posttest. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. The results of the data analysis showed that the posttest mean score was 83.84. This was greater than the pretest mean score that was 68.96. Furthermore, the significant value of this research (0.000) was smaller than the alpha level (0.05). this means that H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that Film stories could be used as media in improving the students’ ability in writing a narrative text of 11th Grades of MA DDI Kanang.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to find out the difficulties faced by students in listening. This research used a descriptive research method and was conducted at a senior high school in Polewali Mandar, West Sulawesi. Thirty-one students from the eleventh grade were selected as research subjects through a random sampling technique. The data was obtained from a questionnaire and an interview. The results obtained from the data analysis is the difficulties that students face when doing listening comprehension are; lack of vocabulary, students' interest in English, pronunciation, lack of concentration, accent, speaker talks too fast, topic changing, and they don't trust themselves.

Abstract

The aims of this research are to find out the level of students’ self-efficacy based on the self-efficacy aspect during the process of writing bachelor’s theses and the students’ ways to improve their self-efficacy during the process of writing bachelor’s theses process. This research used mixed method, which means that qualitative and quantitative were used in this research. In this article only contains the first research question which used quantitative method.   The data of this research was collected through an online questionnaire. The sample of this research were decided by using purposive sampling technique. There were 30 students from class A of the 2018 cohorts of the English Language Education Study Program (PSPBI) at State University of Makassar who participated in online questionnaire then there are 6 students participated in online interview. The result of data analysis found that (1) most of the students were in medium level of self-efficacy (73.3%) and the rest of the students in the high self-efficacy level (26.7%).
