Abstract

This study aims to critically analyze the pedagogical representation in the Indonesian EFL textbook "Bahasa Inggris: Work in Progress" to assess its alignment with the learner-centered and transformative principles of Kurikulum Merdeka, focusing on how it shapes learner roles and pedagogical approaches. This qualitative descriptive study uses Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) based on Fairclough's (1995) three-dimensional model and content analysis. It examines textual, visual, and task design components of the "Bahasa Inggris: Work in Progress" textbook for Grade X, published in 2021. The textbook partially aligns with Kurikulum Merdeka, incorporating progressive elements like contextualized themes and multimodal resources. However, tasks often remain scripted, limiting autonomy and critical thinking. Visuals are illustrative rather than interrogative, and multimodal activities are peripheral, hindering full realization of transformative ideals. This research is useful for textbook developers, English as a Foreign Language (EFL) educators, and policymakers in Indonesia. It can inform material design, curriculum development, and pedagogical practices within language education, particularly concerning the implementation of Kurikulum Merdeka. This study uniquely combines Critical Discourse Analysis and multimodal analysis to evaluate an Indonesian EFL textbook under Kurikulum Merdeka. It advances existing knowledge by highlighting the tension between progressive curriculum goals and traditional material design, offering specific insights for future textbook revisions

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of politeness and impoliteness strategies in character interaction in the novel All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven. The main issue addressed is how various forms of politeness and impoliteness are employed by the main characters and how these reflect their psychological states and social dynamics. This research applies a qualitative approach with a pragmatic analysis method, specifically drawing on Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory and Culpeper’s impoliteness framework. The data were taken from selected dialogues in the novel that illustrate expressions of polite and impolite language. The findings reveal that politeness tends to appear in conversations that express empathy, emotional support, and attempts to build closeness, while impoliteness is more prominent in contexts of internal conflict, psychological distress, or a desire for social distance. These language strategies play a crucial role in character development and reinforce the novel’s central themes of mental health and interpersonal relationships.

Abstract

The article explores the interface of linguistic action and social process from an applied linguistic perspective, taking Dazai Osamu's novel No Longer Human as a case study. This study discusses the extent to which linguistic representations mirror the psychological alienation, social exclusion, and disjunctive self-identity of the main protagonist. By using discourse analysis in conjunction with sociolinguistic theories, the article investigates language's function of constructing, reproducing, and unveiling the social alienation of individuals who are outsiders to social norms in post-war Japan.

Abstract

This study aims to examine cyberhate against Gus Miftah through Roland Barthes' semiotic approach, which includes analysis at the denotative, connotative, and mythical levels. Data consisting of 15 comments from social media platform X were analyzed qualitatively to identify the explicit and implicit meanings as well as the ideology contained in the speech. The findings reveal that the cyberhate directed at Gus Miftah is not only emotional in nature but also reflects the reproduction of social myths regarding the figure of the ulama, the sanctity of pesantren lineage, and resistance to forms of da'wah perceived as profane or commercial. Thus, this cyberhate represents a conflict of values in digital society between traditional norms and contemporary religious practices.

Abstract

This study offers a valuable contribution to the intersection of psychology and literature, as well as provides insights for the general public regarding the portrayal of male fragility and its underlying causes. The purpose of this research is to analyze how male fragility is reflected in the main male character, “Ken,” and to examine the reasons behind the emergence of this fragility in the Barbie film by Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach (2023). The analysis employs critical discourse analysis based on Fairclough’s (2013) framework to explore the complex interplay between power relations and societal norms conveyed through cinematic elements, focusing particularly on the character of Ken. A qualitative descriptive method is used to interpret these findings. The study reveals that Ryan Gosling’s character demonstrates various forms of masculine fragility, including emotional expressiveness, physical inadequacy, intellectual inferiority, subordination to women, failure to fulfill masculine expectations in work-related contexts, and sexual inadequacy. The research also identifies several causes of Ken’s fragility, namely rigid masculine norms, identity discrepancies, conformity pressures, societal expectations, and cultural norms. These findings lead to the conclusion that the Barbie movie (2023) not only presents a critique of patriarchy but also highlights the negative impacts of masculinity norms on men who become trapped within societal expectations. The male fragility portrayed through Ken reflects a widely relevant gender issue, in which men often experience emotional vulnerability due to social and cultural pressures to conform to restrictive masculine ideals.

Abstract

An increasing number of academics, policy makers, and democracy activists are concerned about the rise of political dynasties in democratic societies, especially in cases of democratic consolidation. This dynastic phenomenon has received serious attention in the Indonesian political context. Especially in the last few decades, political dynasties have integrated themselves into the electoral process in Indonesia. In advance of the 2024 election, there were quite a few happenings centered around the topic of political dynasties in Indonesia, particularly during the election this year and under President Jokowi's governance. This research aims to examine how people responses about issue political dynasties that occurred in the 2024 Indonesian general election. This study analyzed public opinion towards political dynasties in elections, including the level of concern, understanding and attitudes towards this practice, using survey methods and qualitative data analysis. Discourse analysis is used in this research as part of a qualitative descriptive methodology. The data was collected by reading the comments of the people regarding the issue of political dynasties raised by President Jokowi in the 2024 election on various social media platforms, including YouTube, Instagram and TikTok, and Twitter. This research examines the discourse surrounding political dynasties on social media during Jokowi's presidency in Indonesia. Through analysis of various quotes, it identifies assertive, expressive, and directive speech acts used to convey opinions on political dynasties. Drawing on John Searle's speech act theory, the study highlights the complexity of social media communication and its role in shaping public opinion. Criticism of political dynasties reflects concerns about democracy, while some support them as expressions of widespread endorsement. The research emphasizes the importance of understanding the nuanced meanings behind social media discourse and the need for open dialogue to promote democratic principles.
